Titanfall 2 rights go to EA, not exclusive to Microsoft platforms – report

Thursday, 20th March 2014 08:04 GMT By Dave Cook

Titanfall 2 will be published by EA and will not be exclusive to Microsoft platforms, a source with supposed knowledge of the matter has claimed.

Gamespot cites an unnamed source, who claims the option of securing rights to Titanfall 2 was dependent on performance of the first game.

Titanfall appears to have performed exceedingly well, debuting at top of the UK charts this week and according to UKIE; has boosted Xbox One hardware sales 96%. Over what figure however, remains unclear.

Speaking with the site, an EA rep said, “We do not comment on rumor or speculation. Right now all our focus is on supporting all the fans worldwide enjoying Titanfall.”

It follows statements from Respawn Entertainment that it will make titles for PS4, but just not the first Titanfall.

What do you make of the above?

    I thought this was common knowledge already?

    Should be common knowledge.

    It will be lot of fun for some of the added platforms playing this fast-paced MP Game on the famous & powerful EA (SimCity, BF4 anyone) server or the even better PSN ones. ^^

    “has boosted Xbox One hardware sales 96%”

    Apparently PS4 sales increased by 76% in the same week too!

    @AppleRedX yeah, you don’t understand that the server infrastructure of Windows Azure is rentable for any platform, so EA/Respawn can use the same server infrastructure for ps4 as it did with the PC version

    Think EA are regretting the originals exclusivity…

    Was a good bit of business by MS though that’s for sure.

    Why? Why would PS4′s sales increase during Titanfall launch week? It make sense if Second Son or Ground Zeroes were out but why before that?

    @The_Red – I think just because Sony shipped an extra 200k units into the channel so more demand was met…

    I reeeally doubt Titanfall 2 will run on Azure – far more likely they’ll run it on AWS.

    @The_Red,
    Becuase Sony did what clever marketeers do, they held back stock for Titanfall week. Amazon US got a multiple thousand shipping just days ago.

    Plus, afaik, despite the increase, PS4 outsold X1 in Titanfall week. Bad news for MS.

    I’m seeing a Mass Effect 2 style situation, which would place my earlier prediction as just as i expected.

    Hey Dave, I have to ask: Where are you getting the “not exclusive”-part from? The source you are linking to says:

    “Terms of EA’s agreement to publish Titanfall 2 are not clear, so we don’t know yet if PlayStation and/or Nintendo fans will get a crack at the rumored next game in the series.”

    Is that info you got yourself?

    Would be nice if the frame rate didn’t suck so much on the 360 (30 fps) and xbone (<50 fps) versions so a ps4 version would be good :)

    Mirosoft have spent serious money on Titanfall & it would not surprise me if they splash the cash on keeping the sequel exclusive…

    It all depends on how much the suits at EA think they’ve lost/gained from this being an exclusive.

    I really want to play it :(

    I really wish EA didn’t own TF.

    It would be in better hands anywhere else.

    @Panthro It doesn’t own Titanfall. Respawn does.

    @Ristas Respawn said that any potential will be non-exclusive months ago. Check the link on the bottom of this piece.

    Good call. And wow if PS4 indeed outsold XB1 during Titanfall week.

    I’m already dying to see NPD numbers for March. Heads will roll at MS if PS4 outsells their system during this particular month.

    @Panthro

    Yeah but the rights are with EA meaning they can exploit it in any way they choose, right?

    @Panthro Exploit?

    Respawn seems to have the final say on all things Titanfall. It always confused me why EA got the full flack for the game’s launch server issues. They are the publisher, not owner.

    I imagine the heads have already rolled. What with the fat man & his skinny friend having departed.

    @Dave Cook – Dave from what I’ve heard Respawn are not in full control of the IP. Vince didn’t even know about the full MS exclusivity until after it had happened. His words. Surely if they had full control he would have known about that minor detail?

    @mistermogul I wonder why MS didn’t fight to publish TF2..? Maybe EA had a first rights to say yea or nay to publish the sequel.

    @mistermogul – Where are you getting that from? Respawn are the ones who made the deal with Microsoft due to their ability to provide free dedicated servers.

  25. mistermogul

    @theduckofdeath – Yeah I have a feeling you are right and EA decided they would probably make more money on a sequel on PS than MS would pay for exclusivity?

    @ddtd – Vince Zampella on his Twitter account.

    It was widely reported at the time, for example…

    “I personally talked to both Microsoft and Sony and explained that we need to find a way to have potentially hundreds-of-thousands of dedicated servers at a price point that you can’t get right now. Microsoft realized that player-hosted servers are actually holding back online gaming and that this is something that they could help solve, and ran full-speed with this idea.”

    It all still seems to me that MS was going to provide them something Sony wasn’t. If there’s no solution to the lack of dedicated servers with Sony and Titanfall 2, I have a hard time thinking anything would change.

    The second game will never be exclusive… It’s ea’s best shot at taking the shooter crown from Activision. They thought xbone was gonna clean up so squeezing money out of Ms would’ve been a great move. Backfired big time.

    It’s funny that we’ve only had these problems ever since dedicated servers went away. And console users aren’t to fault, they’re not a cancer that’s causing all this. The thing is is that you can release dedicated servers that can host console games, too, that’s a thing. So someone can rent a server and some bandwidth and run a server on it meant for XBox One players.

    Player run servers were always better maintained, too. They had more hands-on moderation, which meant that there was less cheating. Another issue that Titanfall has had pretty badly!

    It seems ever since dedicated servers went away, it’s been nothing but problems. If we got them back, it would do so much to fix so much. Clans and services could host their own servers, then, for free and for cost, if they choose. That way, we can go back to constantly having reliable servers for games. Since the servers provided by a game developer/publisher are almost never reliable.

    I’d really love to see big titles launch with dedicated servers again, servers tat can run in PC, PS4, or XBox One mode.

    @29

    …What are you talking about? It would have helped if you actually knew anything about the game.

    Titanfall IS running on dedicated servers. It’s one of its selling points (CLOUDS).
