Friday, 20th September 2013 17:07 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Take-Two today announced that Grand Theft Auto 5 has achieved worldwide retail sales of more than $1 billion during its first three days on sale.

This is according to internal estimates from the company.

“We believe this marks the fastest that any entertainment property, including video games and feature films, has reached this significant milestone,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two.

“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment. We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto 5.”

Released on September 17, GTA 5 first day sales hit $800 million, according to Take Two’s internal estimates and the game holds the record for biggest UK games launch by moving 1.57 million units in 24 hours.

In other news, console gaming is dead, videogame retail is dead and AAA+ games are dead. :)

Absolutely fantastic, each day that i play it i’m more and more amazed. In graphics sense it enters next-gen territory at many times and in some aspects tops current upcoming next-gen games.

I don’t think that “OMG GAME OF THE GENERATION IF U DONT LIKE SOMETHING IN GTA 5 UR STUPID”… :P

But hell, I’m enjoying it, the best GTA ever IMO. Has it’s flaws of course, but one of the best games this year. And I’m happy that Rockstar and Take-Two will be able to make more and more of great games.

If they will announce RDR2 some time in the future, I’ll die of happines :D

I would really like to know, just purely out of curiosity, how much higher that figure be if they had released it simultaneously on PC. Were Rockstar being too short sighted?

This game is absolutely killin’ it (no pun intended btw). Not even the movie industry can hold a candle to the amount of money this has pulled in… Impressive.

The only game to surpass this – sales wise – is probably it’s sequel.

Welll done Rockstar… You deserve it.

@8 No, they weren’t. Why? Because many of the same people that have bought the PS3/360 versions will upgrade to the PC and potentially the PS4/Xbox One versions when they’re inevitably released. So through double dipping they’ll make more money than they would’ve had they released the PC version day 1.

Did GTA5 just knock call of dookie off of its high horse?

Only thing missing for me is custom soundtrack. Did it for the PC and first xbox but still not on the 360. I know you can play your music but its not the same when it comes out your cars speakers.
Still not found one song i like.

@10 Take this for what it’s worth, but I spoke to a Take Two rep and he said They will release GTAV on next gen after they make the ultimate/goty edition on current gen and said it will be sometime next summer. He also said it would be download only but things could change.

@8 More like they were very smart about it. If they released on PC simontaneously console owners would get the icessant nagging about it being “the graphically inferior version of the game” from media, PC etc, and that can really put people off giving it a try.
Talking about platform differencies and “bad versions” is essentially de-hype.

+ now they’ve set themselves up for a GTA:Los Santos edition or whatever, for PC, PS4, X1, they’ll add a fuckton of new content and polish without having to build a new engine or any of that hassle, and we’ll all buy it twice essentially.

It’s Rockstar.. They fucking know how to make bank.

    Fully deserved.

This has put right all that I didn’t like about GTA4 and I love the interaction between the characters not to mention the sheer scale and detail. Awesome.

The world is a better place with games like this!

5 years and over $250 million spent, it was worth every penny of every second. Shows you can make a big profit off a blockbuster franchise without churning out a new game every damn year. It innovated and stepped up in just about every conceivable way. well deserved, Rockstar!

A true AAA in all its essence and the way it should be for all.

A pure example that many should take into account

Right now I am not defending COD but dont forget that those games have come out every year since 2007 and each has made close to or exceeded $1 billion in sales revenue and I bet Activision never spent anywhere near the amount of money Rocksrar spent on GTAV. Sure GTAV is a much more comolex and bigger game to make but still if your going by success COD is sadly still king for continuing to make so much money each and every year l despite the amount of bashing going on online it still sells and sells extremely well. Wheather it takes 3 days or two weeks to reach $1billion in sales means nothing when your game will be over shadowed in a few months by other big hitting games, new consoles, etc.

Also whoever thinks this game looks good graphically must have something seriously wrong with their eyes. The thing is a jaggied mess low textures sinking framerates and horrible texture popping and some seriously weak loading times. It took the game nearly five minutes to load for me the other day.

If your talking gameplay it self its outstanding, the world map is a little small for my liking seen as 90% of it is just mountains and forests.

@21 Good point, but I don’t think sales matter all that much.

CoD and GTA both sell because they have universal appeal. You’d have to be dead not to get your pulse up playing those games.

But GTA V is really quite something. I’m actually surprised by how much I like it. It’s like they took the style of Gay Tony and then actually turned the absurdity up. Which is exactly what needed to happen.

I thought the Housers were too stuck in their own hype to ever realize that. Pleasant surprise!

Spot on about the graphics. Anyone calling that next-gen hasn’t touched a PC in a while (no offence Moonwalker!) :P

This game would is AWESOME but could have been 100% more if you could play your OWN music on your car speakers…. You can do it the other way, but via car speaker is something else…..
