GTA 5 DLC confirmed as Rockstar issues region-lock warning

Tuesday, 13th August 2013 09:10 GMT By Dave Cook

Grand Theft Auto 5 will receive DLC, but Rockstar Games has warned gamers who are thinking about importing the title that additional content bought in one region will not work with a copy of the game bought in another.

This Rockstar Games support page reads, “It is generally recommended that you buy and play games that are designated for your country to avoid potential problems with DLC region-compatibility, such as with pre-order bonuses.

“For example, a North American PS3 GTAV disc (BLUS31156 code on spine of box), Japanese PS3 GTAV disc (BLJM61019 code on the spine of the box) or Asian PS3 disc (BLAS 50639 code on spine of box for Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan. BLKS20442 for Korea) will play on a European PlayStation 3 console.

“However, if you live in Europe (where the GTAV disc code is BLES01807) you will likely have a European PSN account that will not be able to redeem a US pre-order code, and will only be able to download Region 2 (European) DLC, incompatible with non-European discs.”

It was a no-brainer that GTA 5 would get some kind of add-on after launch, but it’s nice to see it there in writing.

What would you like to see fro the studio? More episodic content like GTA 4′s expansions? Let us know below.

Grand Theft Auto 5 drops September 17 on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Just curious, is it the same for Asian accounts? For example – An Asian account(like HongKong etc) redeeming a US code?

Such a scum act imo…. you have already purchased the game LEGALLY it doesnt matter where….. You love the game and want to support it even more by buying the dlc but you cant because of different regions… thats really shit. It also makes me think was there anything cut that they are not telling us about.

This is the same for every other game. There is nothing different here. If you buy a US version of the game you need to buy the US version of the DLC. That’s the one that’s been tested.

They only do this to fight importing games from cheaper regions.

There is no technical or other reason for that.

But you can just create a PSN account for whatever region you need (fake adress from google) and use PSN cards to buy the DLC.

If you look at my PSN accounts I got a place in Las Vegas, Tokyio, London… :)

Technical reason is testing. It may well work, but it’s not been tested. Testing costs and they’d rather not pay extra for that.

I got a place in Beverly Hills – was the only valid US ZIP code I knew off the top of my head :)

Exactly how many people will be buying the US disc and wanting to play the EU DLC? If you cut off your nose to spite your face on this one, it’s only you who’s missing out. This has been the case with DLC for years so I don’t know why people are throwing their toys out the pram now over it!

@9 Stop being a jerk, that’s always been the case on both 360 and PS3 anyway. For all games, from all developers.

No Problem. All you have to do is signing up another PSN account same region as your disc. Now you can buy DLC.

This is how I play and buy DLC for my US PS3 discs on my Asian account and console.

“It is generally recommended that you buy and play games that are designated for your country to avoid potential problems with DLC region-compatibility, such as with pre-order bonuses.”

Isn’t it just a a message they released as a precaution? If they didn’t prepare such a statement, people might have been pissed later on, that their legally acquired games don’t work as they should, and nobody told them, that their PSN accounts were useless when paired with imported copies of the game and vice versa.

The australian version will be missing some sexual content and stuff you can’t do to prostitutes. I heard the gore might be turned down. i’ll be importing the usa version.

Eh, there have always been region lock on DLC’s for the PS3.. Can hardly be surprising.

And yeah, regional PS store details which versions are compatible.

But for the importers, you could wait till the DLC drops on discs.
(Which the GTA IV ones did, atleast)
