Star Wars: Disney, EA sign multi-year publishing deal

Monday, 6th May 2013 23:40 GMT By Debabrata Nath

EA has announced that it has signed an exclusive multi-year publishing deal with The Walt Disney Company for the Star Wars franchise, with games to come from BioWare, DICE and Visceral.

The deal will allow Electronic Arts to develop and publish brand new Star Wars videogames for multiple interactive platforms.

John Pleasant, Disney Interactive’s Co-President issued the following statement:

“This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come. Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.”

The terms of the agreement will give EA rights to make and publish Star Wars games, but Disney will also be retaining the rights to develop new Star Wars games for mobile, social and online game categories respectively.

EA’s president Frank Gibeau told that it’ll use the services of three of its studios, BioWare, DICE, and Visceral for making new Star Wars titles.

This is the first big Star Wars deal that Disney has made since it bought the Star Wars franchise from LucasFilms in October 2012. It went on to close the studio responsible for making Star Wars games last month.

However, this isn’t the first time that EA will be publishing Star Wars games, as it’s been responsible for publishing the well known Star Wars: The Old Republic and other Star Wars titles in the past.

Great….at least EA will continue the trend of below average Star Wars games based on their shitty game engines.

Sorry what? The games that made Lucasarts were developed by people that have left and made their own studios those of which can’t or won’t be able to obtain the license to make a game. Lucasarts hasn’t made a good Star Wars game internally ever since those developers left. This was the only way it was going to go down. Its not like they would sell the license to Activision who make a competing game to Disney Infinity.

mediocre yearly cod like starwars games, micro transactions, always online, half the game sold as dlc, unfinished broken games etc etc etc… thats what we have to deal with when it comes to ea… rip starwars games.

Whats the problem with Bioware and SW?
    Kotor is still awesome!

And I am sure, that Mass Effect came to live, because they had restrictions in the Star Wars IP (no homosexuality etc). Not the only reason, but one of them I think..

If DICE doesn’t start developement on Battlefront 3 and deliver the goods then I will personally steal a car, drive down to their offices in Stockholm and bring the fucking house down. No more excuses, no more bullshit. FUCKING GET ON THE SHIT ALREADY! DAYUM!

edit: Also hire some fucking artist because your art is fucking dry, dull and completely uninteresting! No amount of pretty lighting will ever change that.

    @17 +1

My immediate thought after hearing this was exactly that. DICE with a Battlefront-like game, Visceral with a action/adventure goodguy jedi game and BioWare with the next KOTOR game.

All I want is a Star Wars RPG.

Another decent action-adventure Star Wars game would be welcome.

£10 says the ones making such a fuss about EA having the Star Wars licence are the same people that buy at least one EA published title every year. Not naming any names, you know who you are.

If BioWare, DICE, and Viseral are about the Star Wars life, then I’m with it. BioWare in particular must be salivating at the chance to pick up where they left off with the SW titles.

Again, haters gon’ hate but this might actually turn out to be a great thing.

I do hate EA these days, but the fact that I love the Star Wars universe today (Mainly attracted to the dark side) is in fact the 3 games BioWare made (well one of the is an Obsidian game, to be fair).

Considering that Bioware included a Terminator in Mass Effect 2, surely there’s no way they would somehow be above adding a few jawas or jedis for Mass Effect 4.

Why ruin ruining a good thing?
