DICE Awards 2013: Journey scores eight gongs and GotY

Dice Summit 2013 is well under way, and tonight Vegas plays host to one of the most coveted industry awards shows in the biz. Journey didn’t manage to score in all 11 categories it was nominated for, but thatgamecompany carried home eight trophies.

Nominees were announced in mid-January and a few big names led the pack.

Journey scored 11 nods, and TellTale’s The Walkind Dead adventure series managed eight. Other much nominated titles include Far Cry 3 (seven), Halo 4 (six), Borderlands 2 (five) and Dishonored (five). Journey, Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, The Walking Dead and XCOM: Enemy Unknown were in the running for Game of the Year, the major award.

The DICE Awards are in their 16th year. A full list of winners is below.

Ya know what, I don’t really agree with all the The Walking Dead love. I finished it and thought that it was… okay. I like that it’s kind of original, but I think it’s loved a little more than it really deserves.

Anyway, glad to see that Journey and Borderlands 2 got love…

@1 yeah it’a bit divisive, one of those love-or-meh things. Nobody seems to just like it.

@3 it’s probably the only fighter to come out within three months of the nominations, sooooo

@5 that was September, two months further back. Nominations came out in January.

Also, DICE is pretty keen on innovation in general, so, you know, a new IP probably has a better chance than a sequel.

Next up the Baftas, then the GDC Choice Awards. Hope thatgamecompany don’t run out of space in the trophy room.

It’s quite nice to know the industry has these classy, grown-up awards shows. You know, as a kind of antidote to the poison that Spike concocts every year. :)

Awesome. Congratulations and my respekt to Jenova Chen and his guys. Especially after reading about thatgamecompany almost going bankrupt because of this game. Glad it was worth it.
