GTA 5: ‘It won’t come out in 2012′, says retailer

Thursday, 23rd August 2012 11:53 GMT By Dave Cook

GTA 5 madness continues with each new screenshot sending the press into a frenzy of analysis, as well as a now-debunked release date of November 23rd. An anonymous retailer has also stepped forward and revealed that the date was wishful thinking at best.

UPDATE: Eurogamer Portugal originally reported that it was given a November 23 release date by Zavvi last night. However, the site has since changed its stance after being contacted by the retailer.

Zavvi confirmed to Eurogamer Portugal that it had removed the November 23rd date from its site, that it was purely speculative, and was not based on any information from suppliers.

Elsewhere, an anonymous retail source told Videogamer that they could “bet my wife, my house and your life on it not coming out this year.”

So there you go, normal service can resume.

Oh and screens, everyone likes screens, right?

Is anyone seriously thinking it’s coming out in 2012? That Rockstar is going to suddenly announce, “Surprise! It’s out … now! On all plattforms!”?

Isn’t this going to be a major launch title for the next-gen consoles in 2013-14? Seems a bit daft making a game for an older console when it can just come out on new hardware around the same time, with all the trimmings.

Think about how long this has been in development and how much money it cost to make. Is it daft to release to an established user base of 130m or < 5m? :)

    @2 What @3 said.

Makes no sense ONLY releasing on new hardware, although they could certainly do both and make it a launch title.

You clearly underestimate Rocksstar and the untold power of GTA don’t you!

Can anybody remember GTA4 and how there wasn’t any proper gameplay footage til a week of its release.

I love Rockstar for doing that because it just shows how confident in there games they want to keep there game utterly fresh for gamers.

I saw two hours of both Darksiders 2 and Sleeping Dogs before release months ahead of time, obviously my own fault but still…

Rockstar. Don’t change. Release this game when its good and ready.

At a business level it’ll be ridiculous to release GTA5 on new hardware as the install base on current gen is 6 – 7 years worth meaning more gamers who’ll purchase meaning more money in the kitty.
Releasing GTA on new hardware would only cripple sales exponentially.

Making it a launch title would be a huge mistake. Think how many people own current gen, it would take years to get anywhere near that with nextgen so be alot easier to release this gen, make far more money.

As for releasing this year. I’m pretty certain nextgen is out holiday 2013, so if GTAV came out Spring, June you get E3 with new consoles. DLC for GTAV will no doubt be a lot bigger than 4, there was at least 4-6months between the game and DLC and then the next DLC. That would mean DLC being released when nextgen systems are out, also ruining sales unless Nextgen is backwards comp.

The console giants would get massive benefits from having a title such as this for the launch of their products. I understand Rockstar wouldn’t sell as many units immediately, but having this game to drive the next wave of consoles would be a very smart move for console makers, enough for them to pay a lot of money to Rockstar for the chance.

Well, obviously all speculation but I don’t see it as being totally outside the realms of possibility at this moment in time. :)

Edit: ah yes if next-gen was backwards comp, I hadnt thought about it that way. Interesting thought.

I can’t believe people are still debating this, there is absolutely no way in hell this is coming out this year!

At this stage in the game it would cost console makers too much money to pay off Rockstar in that way. GTAIV sold 9-10m units on each console. Some sort of time limited exclusivity for a next gen port post release is probably the best they can hope for.

Before May next year I’d say. It needs to come out before E3.

@5: I don’t. If there is anyone who could successfully release a game after only a trailer and some screenshots, it would probably be Rockstar. I’m not denying that. I just really don’t think it’s very likely.

Publishers do have behind the scene info for their games to sell to the retailers so if the retailer is sold by what they have seen they order a bigger stock or can plan and prepare for the launch.

I agree with Fin – this is almost certainly a pre-E3 release next year.
