Square Enix E3 2012 lineup detailed – no Versus XIII

Monday, 7th May 2012 07:39 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Square Enix has confirmed a hefty line-up of games for E3 this year, with one glaring – if predictable – absence.

Five of the seven games the Japanese publisher is fronting are western-developed; Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider; IO Interactive’s Hitman: Absolution; United Front Games’ Sleeping Dogs; Airtight Games’ Quantum Conundrum; and n-space’s Heroes of Ruin.

Both Japanese games are internal jobs; Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII, announced at E3 2006 as a companion to Final Fantasy XIII, is not included on the list. The RPG has been expected at every major gaming event for the last few years, but director Tetsuya Nomura said in March that the full reveal had been mysteriously held up. The game’s music will feature in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, though, suggesting it’s not as vapourous as might be thought.

E3 2012 runs June 5 through 7.

Thanks, Gekidami.

TGS is probably the last event for this game, or there is no reason for this to be released.

Making this game since 2006 is just stupid.

It’ll still sell well if it’s one of the PS3′s swansong titles. People have been anxious enough for it that if it goes from a reason to own the system to a reason to not upgrade just yet, it’s not a bad thing.

When this was announced, and the initial trailer revealed showing a much darker FF than 13, I was all over this and was one of my most anticipated games of this gen, but now I couldn’t care less for it.

Western RPG’s have totally taken over JRPG’s for me and I would love to be playing the Witcher 2 right now but I don’t have an Xbox anymore and unlikely to come to PS3 now.

(I have thought about getting an Xbox again JUST for the Witcher 2)

    Tetsuya Nomura asks for patience:

“We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can.

    Your patience is greatly appreciated.”

This is probably not a final lineup, so I wouldn’t say Versus is a no show. If they are showing it, it’s going to be a big surprise, so they wouldn’t spoil it! Unfortunately, it’s probably not going to be there.

Just rename it to Final Fantasy 15, give it a new release for 2013-2014 and shut people up. Calling a game FFVersus THIRTEEN since 2006 without any real E3 presence is just stupid.

I agree with Red: rename it FF 15 and announce a definite 2013-2014 release. Throw a last minute trailer in if you have to.

Square owns so many developers, I don’t see why they can’t pull them all together to complete the game. Sony does it all the time.

Dam could they take any longer developing this game.

Consider FFXIII-2 and only came out a few months ago (and we’ll probably see a sequel to that), there really isn’t much reason to change the name. It’s likely to have plenty of connection to the mythos of XIII.
