Naughty Dog is pleased that Neil Burger will be directing Uncharted film

Naughty Dog has said it’s pleased that director Neil Burger has signed on to helm the Uncharted movie, and his ideas for the flick are seen as a good omen for fans of the game franchise.

Speaking with Eurogamer at the EG Expo last week, Uncharted 3 co-lead designer Richard Lemarchand said the producers of the film have “a lot of integrity,” and are focused on developing the film Uncharted fans are craving.

“We’ve been impressed at Naughty Dog with the level of interest they’ve shown in talking to us and to Amy [Hennig, creative director] in particular in order to get it right,” he said. “The attachment of Neil Burger to the project is a very good sign in that regard.

“I’ve always been very excited about it. I’m interested in this concept of transmedia, perhaps because of the kind of media environment I grew up in, that we all grew up in. I’m a big Doctor Who and Star Wars fan. You have the primary thing, which is the TV show or the movies, but then you extend your enjoyment by re-experiencing those story worlds through these other channels.

“We’ve set out to make the most cinematic character action games that have ever existed. Cinematic as well in the right sense, we hope, because it’s all about ongoing, real-time interactive gameplay as much as we can possibly make it. We’re happy with what we’ve been able to achieve in that regard.

“We’re all big fans of film. We had to study on the techniques of cinema very diligently to be able to make these games. So yeah, I remain excited about the future of the Uncharted feature film.”

With Hennig in regular contact with the producers, it’s looking more likely than ever the story will not stray off course, as it seemed to be doing when David O. Russell was slated for the project.

Neil Burger? Have i missed that news? Anyway, doesn’t seem like a bad choice. Wonder how he’s going to direct action scenes, since most of his films don’t have action.

Sweet. I didn’t like The Illusionist, but Limitless and Interwith with the Assassin were two very enjoyable films. At least someone who does try not to piss the fans off too much, not like that previous guy.

@4: David O. Russell is a good director, but he had very weird plans for this franchise.

Russell’s contempt for the source medium was obvious from the beginning. Hopefully Burger will do it justice.

Although, personally, I would hope they wouldn’t just recreate the story of the games. Tell another story of Nathan and Sully. Tell us how they met or what happened between Uncharted 1 & 2. There’s tons of possibilities that could actually add to the canon, if done correctly.
