Notch: Mojang needs to take better care of modders

Speaking to Gamasutra, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson said his independent company needs to provide better support for modders.

“There’s a strong modding community for Minecraft already that we need to take care of better,” he said, commenting that mods have done “great things” for other games.

In fact, improved technical support for mods is one of the first items on the list for upcoming Minecraft development.

“High up on priority is a proper modding API that lets people who make mods plug into the game in a way that doesn’t break when we update the game,” he explained.

Minecraft has sold over a million copies, a vast proportion of them before reaching beta status. Its pheneomenal rise to dominance of the PC indie scene is soon to be the subject of a documentary.

Well, I don’t really care about mods, because the game has so much value to begin with.
But new items that I can craft would be very nice. :)

Anyone who hasn’t seriously needs to try the Minecart Mania mod – it’s the most amazing addition to Minecraft ever. I made a fully functional water-slide with it. One where the tracks break in mid-air, sending a cart flying, only to dunk through water, hit the bottom of a lake, connect with tracks, and then loop back around to where the ride starts. A pause being offered there so that one might get off.

    It’s nifty stuff.

Really glad to see Notch taking modders more seriously, but I always knew he would because he’s a really nice guy. And watching Notch has taught me something about human nature, really…

You can tell Notch is a nice guy because almost all of his commentators tend to abuse him for not updating often enough, using him as their whipping boy.

You can tell Blizzard is a jerk because you have people lining up, only to bend over, begging “Please Sir, may I have another?”

Humans tend to grant obeisance to the biggest jerk. This is absolutely baffling to me. It might be because my brain is more than a bit broken, but I’ll never get it. I’ll always be nice to Notch though because he really is such an awesome person.
