Square on Versus XIII: “We can’t commit ourselves to 2011″

ffversusxiii

Oh dear. Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has refused to commit to even a 2011 Japanese release for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Kitase, now producing The 3rd Birthday for PSP alongside Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura as art director and FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama as writer, refused to give GamingUnion even a rough release timeline for the RPG at gamescom last week.

“We have no release date information to update,” said Kitase.

“Unfortunately we can’t say anything about that. We can’t commit ourselves to 2011 either.”

The game was originally due to get an E3 re-reveal, according to comments made by Nomura last October, but nothing happened.

And back in January, a trailer shown at Jump Fiesta last December mentioned the message, “Revelation will come next time”.

TGS. Please?

NOMURAAA UAAAGH.

Well, as long as they serve us some quality I don’t mind.
2011 will be a busy year anyway.

inb4 “probably because they are porting it to the 360″ :P

It’ll be a launch game for the PS4.

I agree with WetSnake.

So long as it is a genuine stride forward from FFXIII, they can take as long as they like. And yep, 2011 is pretty fucking stacked as it is.

Are they joking? How long have we been waiting for this game? And Agito too! Come on, guys.

We still haven’t even really seen anything of it, either. It’s got a Gran Turismo-style development span but without the constant drip-feed of media.

And people moan about Gran Turismo 5′s development time.

I don’t know, so I’m asking.

What’s the difference between a FF game and a FF Versus game?

The word ‘Versus’. :-D

Versus is an action-RPG rather than a traditional turn-based(ish) one.

I’ve always thought Versus was the more interesting looking game, so I hope they are porting it to 360 :D

So… there’s a real time combat based Final Fantasy.

Why didn’t someone tell me that… it may have made that game bearable.

It wouldn’t be the 1st, FFVII Dirge of Cerberus was real time.

I’m about to give up on this game. I just wish they announce the fucking game already!!! It’s ridicluous at this point, the game has been in development for like 6 years now. The fucking Japanese developers make me sick this generation.

4 years on and not even a single gameplay video of the game. Why anyone even cares about this game anymore is beyond me.

Can anyone explain me why there’ s so much hype? Because it’s final fantasy? Play ffxiii. Because it’s a jrpg? It’s an action, and square it’ s not the best on them. Because the gameplay is beautiful or innovative? We didn’t see anything and we don’ t even know exactly how it works! So what?

Obviously Square has been making Tetsuya not only work on the crystal nova series but the KH series on the handhelds. Have to agree with Mike, if nothing is showing at TGS for this game just gonna move on, obviously Square has lost its touch and they are still stuck in the past or their traditions.

you know why this is taking so long? its the fact they are putting so much work into a FF7 remake :P

just cancel it already, Squenix. it’ll likely end up as another generic, clunky piece of crap anyway.

Thelonious Cray? Hyde Bohr? Seriously?!

Jesus, I remember when Square actually put some thought into their characters names, instead of the “lets bash a bunch of syllables together” crap they come up with now.

Ahh people moaning about long dev times again classic, im assumin the vs team have listened to the FF 13 complaints and are making the game as amazing as it can be before they release it. The irony of this if the game was released tomorrow buggy as hell people would say i wish it had more dev time again classic.

@24 There’s a big difference between taking your time and taking the piss.

Really, its been in development for 4 years so far, its looking like a 6 year project, in comparison Half life 2, Rage, Bioshock Infinite are pretty much the same. So long as it makes FF good again and returns the magic of the old FF games im not bothered about how long it takes. What will take the piss for me is if the game comes out and is just as bad as FF 13.

@Monk, Michael – I think that was meant to be some sort of joke.

@Hindle – I think it’s been longer then four years. It’s just been four years since it was first shown. That said, it doesn’t exactly mean much how long it’s been in development for right now.

Those guys at SE are working on much too many projects this gen at the same time hence the delays and the mediocre-bad games they are “providing” us.
It’s not in development for years.Nomura’s team paused development on Versus to help with XIII and they kind of started all over after XIII’s release and seeing the reception it got.

@10 I always though that too,but since your hopes probably will come true,i don’t think so anymore if i take into account the previous one.

I’d say it’s funny how some folks believe the game might be good just because it ‘s been in development for ages. if anything, that’s a bad sign.

@ Michael O’Connor

Because Thelonious Cray & Hyde Bohr are really awful names when compared to Squares previous FF offerings like Cloud, Snow, Lightning, Arc, Terra, Shadow & Dagger… What would you prefer they were called, Toilet Seat & Spam Fritter? At least Thelonious & Hyde sound like they really could be names!

@35 Most characters names up to IX were fine. From 10 ownwards, they went a bit tits up.

It’s funny you say those names sound more like real name, while ignoring plenty of Final Fantasy names that sound perfectly realistic. Here’s just a few short examples.

Rosa Joanna Farrell, Cecil Harvey, Edward Chris von Muir, Locke Cole, Tina Branford (Terra’s name in the original Japanese version, Celes Chere, Edgar Roni Figaro, Barret Wallace, Cid Highwind, Vincent Valentine, Yuffie Kisaragi, Irvine Kinneas, Rinoa Heartilly, Edea Kramer (Edea is a real name), Zidane Tribal, Adelbert Steiner, Eiko Carol.

All of the above either are real first and last names, or have a very strong basis in real names.

FFX had Yuna, Lulu and Rikku, as the closest real names you could get, but it suddenly because unfashionable to give people surnames. This was thankfully restored in FFXII, but even though it’s my favourite in the franchise, the only thing close to a real sounding name in that is Fran.

FFXIII took the cake. Some of the character names were literally nothing more than random syllables. Sazh Katzroy, Gadot, Jihl Nabaat, Yaag Rosch, Serah Farron
Dajh Katzroy. It’s like they’re trying to see just how stupidly they can spell a name.

The biggest defining difference is the fact that in all the game up to 12, there was actual significance behind the naming of every character. That idea has been completely thrown out the window in recent years, which is a little saddening.

i think they went back and did alot over after all the “open-world” backlash 13 received

#38

Wasn’t the other half of the backlash for FF13 that they cut a ton of content and wasted half of their time making it focusing on silly things like spending a week making a rock for a cutscene.

Actually, all of the playable characters in XIII were given names somehow related to the colour white; by contrast the PCs in Versus have black names.

I’m not saying you have to think it’s a great naming scheme, but they haven’t thrown out the significance as you suggest.
