What's your favourite Destiny weapon? The stats say Vision of Confluence

Destiny veterans currently choose Solar scout rifle Vision of Confluence as their favourite Primary weapon.

Destiny developer Bungie took a look at what weapons level 20 and above Guardians have been using for the past 14 days, producing the infographic just below.

If your favourite weapon isn't listed, take heart from this quote attributed to chief resident researcher at Bungie, Dr. Bunson Honeydew, who apparently has "access to the billions of rows of data that comprise the historical legacy you’ve imprinted onto Destiny".

"Weapon use in Destiny is pretty diverse and follows a very fat 'long tail' distribution. The guns on these lists are indeed awesome but a lot of players are finding that other, more obscure weapons better fit their tactical needs or their personal play styles," they said.

"Besides, punching all of the aliens in the face is obviously the correct way to play Destiny anyway."

There are few surprises; Vision of Confluence is a rare elemental Primary weapon, and having it with you means you can potentially carry all three elemental attacks at once. Suros Regime is a very popular choice, especially in the assault-rifle heavy Crucible, and the Stranger's Rifle is usually the best weapon most players have when they finish the story and start the real game.

I was a little surprised to see the Vex Mythoclast so low down, but I guess it's kind of rare. And I was personally disgusted that Atheon's Epilogue is so high; it's great for taking down shields in Vault of Glass, but it's so low impact that I despise it otherwise. I'd rather just carry a bog standard Void fusion rifle for shields and use a more powerful primary once they've dropped.

It's interesting that so few expansion weapons made this list; I got a level 32 weapon almost immediately and haven't let go.

In Special Weapons, Murmur is pretty popular; everyone gets it for finishing The Dark Below's story, and it lets you switch between Solar and Arc energy, which is rad. Powerful sniper Ice Breaker, with its refilling ammo, remains a solid favourite, and everyone's one new bae Black Hammer rides high in the list. Of course, Praedyth's Revenge is a perennial favourite.

As for Heavy weapons, the popularity of Rare weapons suggests that it's harder to get your hands on Legendary and Exotics of this class - or that these Rare weapons have good random perks like extra ammo and elements. New launcher Dragon's Breath outranks Gjallarhorn, one of the most powerful weapons in the game, despite not being quite as good by the numbers - it does look great, though, and Guardians are a vain lot, aren't we?

I'm pleased to see the useless Swarm didn't place, but where's Thunderlord? My level 32 Thunderlord is just the most beautiful gosh darned thing.

I'd love to see Bungie pull this data again for level 30 and above and see how it changes; there are quite a few Rare level weapon on this list, which - ha!

The developer did take a look at weapon data for players at all levels, and the addition of all the brand new Guardians who came on board over the holidays knocked a few of the more powerful and rare weapons out of the charts.

By isolating Crucible data, the charts changes again. The Vex Mythoclast ranked much higher, and Vision of Confluence fell off completely - scout rifles aren't the best choice for PvP. I was surprised to see The Stranger's Rifle in there again; it's a great little gun but very quickly outclassed as you progress. I guess the even-level in PvP brings it back into the big leagues.
