Teaming up with other players from around the world is critical in Sea of Thieves, as you’re going to want to form the strongest crew you can to take on the toughest voyages. In this Sea of Thieves crew guide, we’ll be walking you through how to play Sea of Thieves online, as well as how to play Sea of Thieves solo on your own.

How to Join a Crew in Sea of Thieves
Whether it’s your first time playing Sea of Thieves or not, you’re always going to be taken to a screen where you’ll have to choose which type of ship you want to set sail on. At this ship selector screen which you can see pictured just below, you’re going to be presented with the opportunity to either join a massive galleon, the biggest ship there is in Sea of Thieves, or the far smaller sloop ship for solo adventuring.
This is Sea of Thieves’ way of asking you whether you want to play online with other players from around the globe, or whether you want to set sail by yourself. If you select the smaller sloop ship, you’ll immediately set sail on your own, arriving in the tavern from which you can embark on your solo voyage (we should mention that although you’re on your own ship, the larger world is still inhabited by other players).
However if you select the galleon option, then you’ll be taken to a screen which gives you the opportunity to invite other players into your game manually. This is the way you can play with your friends in Sea of Thieves, as it’s on this screen that you can select on the option to ‘Invite a Player’, and select someone from your friends list that wants to join your Sea of Thieves adventure.
However if you simply want to join three other random players from around the globe, then go ahead and select the option to launch the game, and Sea of Thieves will match you up with three other players. We should note that if you’re playing Sea of Thieves on a PC and you’re matched up with randoms, you can press T to start typing in the chat, communicating with your fellow crew if you’re not using a headset.
We should note that while you’re playing on your own sloop ship, you can actually run into hostile player crews on a galleon. Although this might seem like a bit of an unfair situation, the sloop is far quicker than the galleon, meaning that if you encounter a crew of hostile players, you can beat a hasty retreat away from them with any treasure you’ve got on board.
