Gotham Knights is not a continuation of the Arkham series

Though Gotham Knights' name and setting might suggest otherwise, the game is not actually set in the Arkhamverse.

It was very easy to assume Gotham Knights is a continuation of the Arkham universe, particularly Batman: Arkham Knight. The reveal trailer starts with a posthumous message from Batman, which, though played by a different actor than the mainline Arkham games, suggested the story follows on from Arkham Knight.

Developer WB Games Montreal, however, has since clarified that Gotham Knights does not follow on from any existing games, and is set in its own DC universe.

"Gotham Knights is an original story set in DC's Batman universe and not connected to the Arkham series," the studio confirmed to Comicbook in a statement.

Although this is a little disappointing, it makes sense that WB Montreal didn't want to be shackled with the expectations that come with creating something new in an existing and beloved universe of characters.

In case you missed it, Gotham Knights was revealed over the weekend as a two-player co-op action game starring Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood, who take on the mantle of protecting the city following the death of Batman. Though co-op seems to be the focus, the game can also be played solo.

Gotham Knights releases sometime in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series.
