Rust passes 1 million sales milestone while still in Early Access alpha

Tuesday, 11th February 2014 05:28 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Rust has recruited 1 million eager survivalists since the sandbox launched on Steam Early Access in December last year.

Facepunch Studios founder Garry Newman revealed the milestone in a tweet, with a screngrab of lifetime sales units. It makes us feel a bit strange about celebrating 150,000 sales not that long ago.

It’s a major turn of affairs by any standards, but is especially exciting for Newman given how strongly Rust is outpacing Garry’s Mod, the product he is best known for.

Currently in alpha, Rust is still taking form; Facepunch only just took out zombies, which has disappointed those hoping for another DayZ clone.

Even in its early state it’s pretty interesting, and Dave’s newb diaries are pretty amusing.

You can buy into Rust for $20 via Steam.

Thanks, PC Gamer.

Any sign of single player on the horizon?

Having played it to death the past two evenings I can honestly say it wouldn’t be any fun single player.

As it stands now.. as a multiplayer survival game where you make friends and enemies alike, it’s looking very good. I just hope they don’t slack off on development since they have already made quite a bit of cash.

Also.. I still can’t post comments on Chrome (cleared the cookies)..

I’ll stay away from it then. The forums are full of how terrible it is for griefers etc. Can’t be bothered with that.

Depends on your choice of server. We’re on a multiplay one which is 90% friendly. they gang up on any griefers. It’s like having your own little village of survivors who look after each other. :)

i am TOTALLY hooked to dayZ atm. it´s a bugfest and i experienced some weird cheap ´sudden death´ screens while being completely healthy. it can be very very frustrating when stuff like this happens after a 2+ hours tour de loot…but if you play it with a friend – voice chat and everything clicks – it´s among the best coop experiences you can have. really looking forward to the final build. i hope they go the less is more route and do not ruin the magic. a game like this should be a little rough around the edges.

i enjoyed the last of us mp because it was more slow paced. it never reached it´s potential, not even close but you could already feel that this concept is just great.

you can´t really compare these games but i want a slow paced, true survival game so bad and it looks like we will get one in the near future. maybe it´ll be dayZ, maybe someone else will deliver, who knows…but it will be happening and that´s great.

that said, will definitely look into rust later :)

Man Rust is addicting, but Jesus H.. the grievers on this game are worse and more plentiful than almost any game I’ve ever played, even DayZ..
