Alien: Isolation co-op was considered, but won’t feature in final build

Alien: Isolation developer The Creative Assembly dabbled with the idea of adding a co-op mode to the project once, but it was ultimately canned. Find out why here.

It follows our own Alien: Isolation preview and interview, our first gameplay footage and a stack of trailers and screens. You’re spoilt for choice really.

Speaking to RPS about Alien: Isolation’s one-time co-op mode, creative lead Al Hope said, “It’s very much about a single player experience. We did think about it, it’s not like we never considered it – and we had some pretty neat ideas around that. But for us the focus always was that single player experience.

“And I think because you have this dynamic alien and it’s about the player’s choices while they play it, it does mean that you can go back and try different stuff out. So I think there is a lot of scope to have players go back and do things differently.”

UI lead Jon McKellan added, “I think that as soon as you up the amount of humans then you’re no longer as ‘outnumbered.’ You know, if you had two or three humans facing up against one alien it’s a completely different experience where you’re working together to overcome it rather than just trying to survive. It just felt better to leave it single player.”

What do you make of Alien: Isolation so far? Does it tickle your Amnesia funnybone in just the right way, or does it make you want to scream “Game over man!” in Bill Paxton’s unmistakable drawl?

Campaign co-op, or don’t bother. Co-op ‘modes’ just don’t cut it.

    I’d love a proper split-screen co-op horror.

Like RE5/6, but scary. And good.

As soon as you add coop to a horror game, it stops being a horror game.

After the last Alien franchise game disaster, I don’t see anyone buying this who hasn’t been in extended cryo-sleep for 57 years.

The whole premise of this title breaks Aliens canon anyway. When Ripley woke at the start of Aliens, her daughter had died, an old woman, on Earth. An Earth that had “never discovered a creature like [Ripley] described on over 300 surveyed worlds”.

So another “by the numbers” FPS that shats on the franchise.

There are experiments with co-op based horror games but most of them are just small little things on the PC, stuff like Damned and Garry’s Mod maps. Afraid of Monsters with Sven Co-op.

Some of them can be very effective, AoM is still one of the best horror games ever made even with some there beside you.

Its alot harder to progress beyond the shock stage of things and generate an unsettling atmosphere when you have someone else to blow off steam and laugh with.

Another commenter who doesn’t do their research before posting.

I agree, but then some of us want to explore horror games without literally shitting our pants. It doesn’t make the experience any less enjoyable :)

What’s the point of a horror game if you’re not shitting your pants? ;)

Wow, now I know this is a scam. There is no way studios would agree to finance a singleplayer, offline, Amnesia inspired, horror themed AAA game without cover system, action-heavy set-pieces or forced multiplayer game, then agree with removal of co-op.

No… Either it’s a scam or it’s a super super super cheap game. Otherwise it would have been another Dead Space 3, Aliens CM or Resident Evil 6 (As in, shooter heavy crap-fest).

@10 The game is already getting a 25 % discount so you probably aren’t that far off :) .

That’s quite disturbing news.. certainly points to having no faith in it. :/

@6 How does this game break cannon? Ripely was in cryosleep for YEARS, as you wrote. Did her daughter just sit in a chair during that whole time?
