Sony patent looks like a new version of PlayStation Move, see it here

Tuesday, 10th December 2013 11:18 GMT By Dave Cook

Sony filed a patent for something called ‘Flat Joystick Controller’ back in June 2012, but documents related to the design have recently become published online. It looks like an iteration on The PlayStation Move wand controller.

The image above and supported documents were filed on Free Patents Online under United States Application number US20130324254.

Similar to the PS4′s DualShock 4, the device concept features a flat touch-pad on the front, right below its face buttons.

The invention summary reads, “A controller device to interface with a computer gaming system includes a body having a handle and an object disposed at one end of the handle. A touch surface is disposed on one side of the handle. The touch surface has an indicator that is identified by a surface characteristic on the touch surface. The touch surface provides an area for receiving directionality control in response to interfacing by a finger of a user.

“In addition to the touch surface, a plurality of buttons are disposed on the body. A circuitry is disposed in the body of the controller. The circuitry is configured to receive data indicative of a directionality control and transmit the data to a game console for impacting an action by a program executing on the computer gaming system.”

What to you make of the above? Could Move make a return on PS4? Let us know below.

That would address one of the things I think Move got wrong which is some sort of analog type input on the wand, not just the navigation controller. That would solve the issue of use in FPS where you have to combine aim and turn into a single input. Without it being standard in the box then I can see it just being supported by the Sony studios like last time though.

Wasn’t the point of the light on the back of the ds4 to replace the move, so they didn’t have to release a new one?

The Move wand would definitely benefit from something like this.

Playing Sorcery your only camera control is the old school “centre camera” trick, which was shite, plus the game kept often decided it’d be placing the camera where it damn well pleased leaving you to get butt raped from off-screen.
