Tuesday, 16th July 2013 09:15 GMT By Dave Cook

Assassin’s Creed 2 is going free to all Xbox Live Gold subscribers from today, Microsoft’s Major Nelson has confirmed. Consider this your friendly reminder folks.

Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb confirmed the giveaway on Twitter earlier this month:

So there’s your reminder. Now, who’s going to get the game? Let us know below.

I would of got it had I not played it and completed it a few months ago. A little slow to the party, but I took my time with AC games.

This and Brotherhood are the only quality games in the series… (IMO)

I like how MS are making it free for Gold members with no strings attached but games this old? Wonder if they’ll do an EA game where the servers have already been shut down- speaking of which how long after a games release do they do it? Isn’t it every 2 years now?

Good choice, this is one of the best AC games. Next to Brotherhood.

@3 Beggars can’t be choosers. The good thing is, Xbox LIVE players won’t have to keep their Gold subscription to keep playing the game(s).

As for EA games, for what it’s worth, FIFA 11 servers shut down at the beginning of this year (January). So I’d say, around 30 months before the servers close.

These free Xbox Live Gold games are a joke compared to PS+. But it could have been worse… AC1 for example :)

I’d rather not have to retain a live subscription in order to play my ‘free’ games, especially if I wasn’t fussed about multiplayer.

PS+ is a games subscription service. It’s not really ‘free games’, although I admit the quality is good.

I let my gold expire in May, and I already owned Fable 3, Halo 3, and AC 2 so none of this thrills me. While I think it’s cool MS is giving free games away, I would have rather them release Revelations or Brotherhood even as anyone that wanted AC2 already has it by now. I bought it used from gamefly for under $8 years ago. I imagine, you could get it for $5 no problem, I have seen it that cheap on steam.

@2: I agree, essentially. I liked 1 as well, in its day, because it broke new ground, introduced the awesome mechanics and well-populated world. But II and Brotherhood better fleshed out the concepts into real gameplay.

I already own it, though, so the wait continues for me to take advantage of this promo series.

Best game by far in the series. Then they went annual and over stretched the story.

Not the best game to give away…. Do better next time MS…. Free Crackdown 2 and I’d be happy

@5 “Xbox LIVE players won’t have to keep their Gold subscription to keep playing the game(s).”

Is this confirmed? That’s pretty impressive if true…unless the trade-off for being able to keep the games ‘no matter what’ means a collection of titles all more than two/three years old.

Yeah. Was even considering the “Come back to Gold for £1″ offer on the dash recently to pick up a few of the titles. I have a big enough pile of shame from PS+ though. Good to see this, free is always good. Hopefully it paves the way for a more competitive PS+ like element to Gold. It needs more stuff like this to make you feel you are getting value rather than being shafted to access features which are freely available on other systems. (NB: I’m talking about extra services like Netflix, browser etc. not the core MP functionality).

I have let my Xbox live subscription expire in preparation for PS+ with my PS4.

Shame they didn’t give free games away over the last 8 years I was a subscriber!

This sucks. Assasin’s Creed, Fable 3, I already played these games and Defense Grid is just an outdated arcade game. I hate the AS series and I got my copy of Fable 3 for like 10$ several years ago. I hope Banjo Kazooie or GOW isn”t the next, since I already own these too. I’d rather have some Xbox Original games.

If anyone hasn’t played AC2, or maybe played AC1, found it too repetitive and decided not to get 2, you should do this free download. You don’t have to complete all the side-quests to get enough health to finish the game like AC1, if you’re not a completionist you can still enjoy it. The fighting was improved over the original, and Ezio is a solid character.

im on Gold at the minute, if this is the best they can do i am thoroughly disappointed. they are just giving you games that no body wants, or that everyone who did want it, has already played. i shit my pants laughing when i heard Fable 3 was the first free game.

you all have to realise, they only offered this “games for gold” service in the wake of their PR suicide. if they didnt fuck up so badly you would still be paying £40 a year for the “privilege” of online play.

PS+ (fuck i wish i had kept my PS3 2 years ago..) has offered BATTLEFIELD 3 AND PAYDAY THE HEIST this month you know? those are top quality games and battlefield 3 is still selling for £30 new (about 45$ in the US) in my local game store.

Microsoft is pissing on our heads without the courtesy of calling it rain. Games for Gold is a shitty half assed PR Stunt.

    Fable 3
    Defense Grid
    AC 2.

bets are on, who thinks they will offer Perfect Dark Zero or Kameo as the next “free” game???

@18 It’s very doubtful MS decided to offer games with gold only after the DRM debacle. They would have had to arrange a deal with the publishers long before the annoucement was made.

As for the comparison with PS+, it’s not really apples to apples. That’s a service for getting games and discounts, you’ll still play them on the same shitty free network. The games are not a free bonus to go with a subscription you already had.

Personally I have already played a couple of these games, but I haven’t played everything, so I imagine some others will come out I can download and have a new game. I’m not going to whine about my free stuff not being awesome enough. I didn’t get XBL Gold for the free games.

In addition to the games with gold other free sponsored games have been released lately that are a lot of fun. Crash Course 2 and Harm’s Way amoung them. These are easily comparable to the indie games everyone thinks are so awesome these days.

Download the free games or don’t. It’s a free add-on to a subscription those of us who are using it already have. We’re not paying extra for the games. If they didn’t offer any free games at all nobody would be saying a thing, but because they are they should be paying an arm and a leg to get top shelf games? Please.
