Monster Hunter -”no plans” for a Vita version, says Capcom

Saturday, 27 April 2013 14:23 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Capcom has once again thrown cold water on the hopes of a Monster Hunter game heading to Vita.

IGN noticed that last week on the Capcom forums, the firm’s associate communications specialist Yuri Araujo said the firm has “no plans for a PS Vita Monster Hunter at the moment.”

Instead, fans will have to settle for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PS Store.

His comments add weight to those made by Capcom SVP Christian Svensson back in January, when he squelched rumors of Monster Hunter 4 heading to the Sony handheld.

Thanks, Legendaryboss.

well there is soul sacrifice to compensate it and there will be toukiden (which looks very promising) as well

Very dumb Capcom! Playing favorite to Nintendo is stupid when SONY is the future of gaming. Vita shits all over anything Nintendo has to offer and people want a gorgeous portable HD Monster Hunter very bad.

Seriously Sony should just get a team together and just rip Monster Hunter off. If I were Sony I would have done it years ago. Monster is good but it needs an updating.

  8. The_Red

Of course not. A Vita version means they have to redo all the assets again instead of uprezing the crappy ones from PS2 era.

Seriously, these games deserve better than the lazy rehashed assets Capcom has been giving them. Monster Hunter 3 U on Wii U should and could have look a LOT better but no, they just uprezzed old stuff and were done with it. The sad part is that even Monster Hunter 4 seems to be using the same crappy low-res, low poly stuff from older versions.

#7 So what do you think Soul Sacrifice is?

    #8 Perfect words.

Capcom needs to embrace a new big development to build a new game on Vita. Right now they are cancelling lot of projects and recycling old stuff to earn money (Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a fucking beatiful joke, but people like all the system around playing with WiiU and 3DS and whatever, but its a shame what they have done this gen when they bring “HD” to something).

Beyond the fact that, Capcom have a exclusive royalty with Nintendo probably (man, how big can it be so Sony isnt allowed to convince them in order to develop a MH for Vita), if a MH game arrives to Vita, it will have to be completely recycled, not something new.

When it comes to the Vita there are 8 times as many 3DS owners in Japan alone. This is mostly why companies don’t give a shit about it. Even PSP software is a more profitable venture.

i think this thing is really getting there now. i don´t mind ports if done well either. i even prefer to play certain games on a handheld sometimes (persona!). there are some good looking games coming to the vita and i am sure we will see some good stuff we heaven´t heard about at e3. i loved my psp but wasn´t really feeling the vita instantly. i thought uncharted was really mediocore, was very disappointed by that game, gravity rush too-was just soso, haven´t even finished it yet. not a bad game but nothing i really need to play. but with the new sly game, soundshapes, soul sacrifice, persona, tearaway, dragons crown, killzone mercenary, toukiden, warriors lair etc, it really is going in a direction i want it to go: it´s getting a great variety in great games. add the ports, like i said, i really do prefer some of them on a handheld, and you really get tons of stuff to play. i mean a ninja gaiden or mortal kombat portable is pretty cool if you ask me. i also totally love that the hd collections (jak, sly, metal gear and hopefully all the other ones) are on the vita. it really is getting there. i thought it was dead but i wouldn´t really count it out now. a few unique surprise smash hits (more in the direction of soul sacrifice and tearaway not so much plasystation smash bros all stars), a pricecut, making remote play a reality, cheaper mc cards, maybe even a redesign…voila?

Christ, some of your comments! It’s like Capcom sided with the console that DOESN’T sell! I’ve never known a more
Pro-Sony ‘brofisting’ set of deluded gamers until I came here! So what Monster Hunter is on Nintendo formats? If the Vita is THAT strong it’ll come up with its own alternative.

  16. ActionGameKing

It’s pretty obvious Nintendo has an exclusive deal with Capcom.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. Clupula

Considering that the Vita is not selling as well as the 3DS in Japan, I don’t see why this is some sort of conspiracy. It’s Capcom trying to go where their stuff will sell.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Lengendaryboss

They are different reasons 1. Monster Hunter was successful on PlayStation Platforms and having it on another platform as a exclusive is a betrayal, Capcom is a multiplatform publisher so they have port to all the major platforms where it makes financial sense PS3, PSP, DS, etc in Japan of course. 2. Monster Hunter hasn’t gone above and beyond because Capcom is lazy 3. If Capcom did indeed sign an exclusivity deal thats why. Capcom is a multiplatform publisher no limiting your audience.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. Eddie Rodrigues

@15 First the 3DS didn’t sell until about a year ago so shut up, second, like my cult, well informed fellow LegendaryBoss said it IS a betrayal, unlike the MGS case where ALL platforms will get Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain in this case only a single machine/company will get the benefit of having this franchise. If companies want to make a exclusive then it is fine, but if they change to another console and don’t release the game on the machine where the game previously was an exclusive that is blatant and disgusting BETRAYAL.

@17 The PSP only started selling when the first Monster Hunter came to the console, so your argument isn’t that valid, although Capcom changed A LOT.

@13 What… the PSP is gradually being replaced by the Vita or the 3DS, you don’t see DS games coming that much now eh?

@Erthazus the Ultimate Fanboy lvl 666 This is sad to me, but to actually show you how stupid you sound every time you comment on anything I have to go down to your level and start with the offenses: You’re the disaster as usual. You don’t OWN the console so you can’t say anything about it.

Don’t even say: OH THE STATISTICS SHOW THAT THE 3DS SOLD MORE but think about it, how many 3DS owners actually buy the products made for the console? How many bought the portable because of multiple franchises and not just outdated games such as Pokémon? How many will buy most if not all the games that Nintendo didn’t produce or had exclusivity deal? How long will it take before the 3DS becomes outdated and either people will play on their tablets’ casual games or on the Vita’s core and challenging games? And how many people hate the Second Analog or great D-Pat, or two touch screens that multiply the number of actions that can be made in the game? Very few, rare exceptions, 2 years process and no one that actually plays games :D

Do you own a 3DS? If not, I recommend taking your own advice and keeping your mouth shut.

@18 I just don’t understand the faces of Janus here, some threads seem to acknowledge that Nintendo don’t have 3rd party support so thus it’s down the toilet they go, yet when Capcom decide to develop for the 3DS or Wii U (in the case of Monster Hunter) there’s uproar with Sony owners picking up their pitchforks storming the castle because of some ‘betrayal’?

Capcom are in the business to make money, now if Nintendo have paid for some exclusive rights then it must be more monetary gain then putting it on rival formats. If they haven’t paid for those rights then I’m sure Capcom will put it on Vita eventually so there isn’t really a problem is there? If its that big a deal and that big a game – surely it’s worth owning for 3DS since it doesn’t really matter what system plays what game does it?

    #20 2 years ago
  21. Lengendaryboss

It isn’t just “some betrayal”, Capcom are developing for those platforms for all the wrong reasons (which i have stated). Your right Capcom are in the business to make money hence it would be profitable “port to all the major platforms where it makes financial sense PS3, PSP, DS, etc in Japan of course” as previously stated.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. dreamcastnews

As I said, if it makes that much sense, It’ll happen.

Sony already have a stellar lineup of 3rd parties making software for them, Nintendo not so much. The true betrayal surely would be that fans of the series don’t buy it for the console it’s released for and would sooner boycott Nintendo just for the sake of branding it just seems a little silly, I’m pretty much Nintendo as lead format but that doesn’t mean I didn’t buy a PSP back in the day for LBP, MGS and some others that I couldn’t get on DS, I’m sure ill get a Vita once those memory cards come down I don’t feel any wrongdoing that way because it doesn’t really matter what plays what, maybe Capcom just think its better suited for 3DS for all those Pokemon fans who yearn for something more realistic (as it gets I guess!)

Anyway, the tag line also says ‘at the moment’ that tells me you’ll get a Vita version just a little later down the line.

^To betray fans will lead to be betrayal at some point, a quote “an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” will help in this situation.

  25. vOL

@22: I agree at the true fans part though. True MonHun fans would just buy the 3DS to play the game but lets face it, a lot of gamer doesn’t have enough budget to buy a new platform just for the sake of one game. Not to mention a lot of us don’t want to bring out 2 or more handhelds at the same time outside. Very inconvenience.

Speculationly speaking, I think when the deal was ongoing between Capcom & Nintendo, Sony definitely knew about it. It maybe go like Sony doesn’t have enough money to counterbid Nintendo proposals even to be multiplatform title or the price Capcom asking is too much for Sony where Sony can just make a couple of new IP out of it. I bet its the latter given on record how Sony have balls in creating new IP even not in their best situation.

Or Sony have conditions on MonHun to have graphics upgrade to be on Vita and Capcom being COD lazy don’t want to do that. Really the graphics don’t change that much even on the WiiU just being up res and touch up for the most part.

Well I’m not fond on Capcom decisions to make the exclusivity deal with Nintendo when the series basically grew famous on PSP, but in business sense, when it involved a lot of money, I can totally understand the deals being made. In my book, one great game lost but got 4 new awesome games(Soul Sacifice, Toukiden, God Eater 2, PSO2) to compensate is more than a blessing.

  26. lexph3re

Personally, I don’t give to rats if monster hunter finds it’s way to Vita or not. It can stay on 3DS besides with 3DS being huge in japan im sure everyone who wants it over there already has a 3DS.

So far half their fanbase has bought it so it’s found a good home on 3DS. I will stick with God Eater 2, Toukiden, Valhalla Kinghts 3,Ragnarok O and Soul Sacrifice. Those are more then good enough for me.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Eddie Rodrigues

@26 and @25 I am hyped about God Eater 2 as well, but the people who own a PSP already and don’t own a PSV might consider getting that version instead, I am not really sure, are there any exclusive features to the PSV version? Because, heck, those graphics are beautiful!

Sony should let Portstation Vita die.

PS Vita – 4.7 million sales
Nintendo 3DS – 31.09 million sales. (It is also the fastest selling console right now compared to all platforms like PS3 or 360)

Let that stupid system to die. It’s a failure and there is no reason to support it with Monster Hunter or any other game because it is dead. D.E.A.D. Even price cut won’t save that POS from being dead. Sony made a mistake that costed them money in R&D.

  29. lexph3re

Well aren’t you the posterboy for the Gaming community Erth. Let’s not ask for the evolution of games, let’s ask for them to die and fade into obscurity. That is the goal of gaming… Steady and slow death to appease the morbid tendencies of select individuals.

  30. Erthazus

I just have sense and logic. There is no reason for PS Vita at all. Handheld market right now is not in the best shape compared to previous generation because half of the people play on iDevice’s now and the rest of it is in Nintendo hands with 3DS.
Vita is just a shitty evolution from PSP. World does not need a sequel of it and there is no reason for publisher to support it.

Original games are coming from Sony’s part and they are not That good to be honest, everything else is a port or simultaneous release with PS3 or there are no games at all on it. Funny thing though. There are a lot of games that are coming for every platform except for PS Vita… :D

    @28 and @30 FAILURE!!

Mate, stop being a 8 year-old moron. Remember the PSP? Sold 19 M copies in Japan, whereas the DS sold 28 M in the same region, although gamers and devs consider the PSP superior to the DS.

So let is look at the demographic here, in one month the Vita increased from 1.5 M worldwide copies to 4.7 M worldwide copies, that is pretty fecking good eh?

Sony is already happy, they now it will sell more than the PSP and that is their goal, the 3DS sold more because of the casual market as I said earlier this market tend to play less and invest less, but you can go back to 4Chan now, spread your edgy unsustained fanboynism like a retarded kid shouting: DEAD DEAD DEAD SEE I CAN SPELL IT’S D. E. A. D. G. U. F. Ermmmm. G.

    #31 2 years ago
  32. lexph3re

Again, nothing more then a morbid outlook. There is always a place for a device like Vita in the Handheld space. The fact that they are being outsold by a cheaper 2 year old system that has also had a revision is not something that belittles the Vita at all.

Also, the Vita’s exclusive titles that are releasing Valhalla Knights 3, SS, Tear Away, KZM, God Eater 2, Tales of Hearts R etc etc are all quality titles that are more then respectable for the device.

It’s just they have to coherse “Gamers” to buy the device with portable renditions of their favorite games so that they can increase the appeal. People don’t realize that consoles survive only because of us. If it isn’t doing well that is no one elses fault but the communities.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. Erthazus

@Eddie Rodrigues, “although gamers and devs consider the PSP superior to the DS.”
Who? Who? Who said that? Links please with statistics of players that says about superiority.

“Remember the PSP? Sold 19 M copies, whereas the DS sold 28 M copies,”

Hey, “8-year old” tard, PSP sold for 73 million units and DS sold for 153 million units up to date and DS continues to sell a lot.

“So let is look at the demographic here, in one month the Vita increased from 1.5 M worldwide copies to 4.7 M worldwide copies”

Retard, they incresed that number in ONE YEAR.

“Sony is already happy, they now it will sell more than the PSP and that is their goal, the 3DS sold more because of the casual market as I said earlier this market tend to play less and invest less,”

ahahahaha. So much bullshit here. Go and see how much software Sony sells on the Vita and how much software 3DS sold already.

    Stupid Sony fanboys.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. Eddie Rodrigues

@32 As a people who have relatives and friends who live or go often to Japan, I have been familiarized with the following scenario: People in Japan tend to play MUCH in portable devices. The children often play Nintendo consoles for 10 to 15 minutes. The adults tend to play Sony consoles for about an hour, mainly when they are waiting outside a meeting room or coming back home, in the subway, etc.

Now you go to a store, there is the Nintendo reserved shelves who are full with games that sell little, mostly are 3rd parties, PokéMon, Animal Crossing and Zelda games are always sold out, with the notable exception of MH. The PSP’s and PSVita’s shelves are always being renewed, the games keep selling, they manage to keep the demand because they know people will buy them and they need to keep the stock full. Those shelves are quickly emptied and quicly replaced. The casual market is always the doom of some and the bliss of others while the core market is always profitable.

@33 Yes I was talking about PSP and DS sales in Japan I already corrected that because your simple minded self can’t come to a conclusion, it was in ONE MONTH thanks to the price drop and the fanboy here is you, I w=own each portable and I am sure which one is actually superior…

    @35 Crunch: noun

1 [usually in singular] a loud muffled grinding sound made when crushing, moving over, or hitting something:

2 (the crunch) informal a crucial point or situation, typically one at which a decision with important consequences must be made:
when it comes to the crunch, you chicken out

    > a severe shortage of money or credit:
the Fed would do what it could to ease America’s credit crunch

@36: Just ignore the naysayers that actually don’t contribute to the topic of the news. Especially a PC elitist who condemn a system based on sales and people for having choices and preferences. “I just have SENSE and LOGIC”, oh the irony..*facepalm*

@37 I’m not nay-saying here, I’m just surprised how the word ‘betrayal’ is being thrown around, since the thesaurus owns a 3DS anyway, I’m wondering why he/she doesn’t just buy it on that? It isn’t rocket science, really.

Jesus, whats going on here. Its not a Betrayal or anything like that. It was and is a Decision they made, and that can Change again the Future. Its just normal, the World is changing all the Time. Final Fantasy was once on Nintendo Consoles, than Sony, now Multi, or Metal Gear going Multi. Stuff like that just happen, I don’t understand all the Fuzz.
And Capcom really isnt the First Time Doing something for Nintendo Only. They made some Zelda Games for gods Sake.

  41. Eddie Rodrigues

@39 they made the decision to betray Sony :D

    #41 2 years ago
  42. dreamcastnews

That being said if betrayal is the right term, it did happen to Nintendo with Capcom in 2003 with the ‘big 5′ (remember those!) on Gamecube so horses for courses, I guess.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. Clupula

@42 – That wasn’t a betrayal. That was Capcom jumping from a sinking ship. They thought bringing their games exclusively to Nintendo would help sell the Gamecube, as well as sell their own games. All it did was lower their sales when they saw the majority of their audience was on the PS2. So, they did the right thing and brought them back, where they belonged.

Amusingly, I was actually about two weeks from buying a Gamecube as a secondary system when the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 was announced and I figured, “Eh, don’t need to buy a Gamecube anymore.”

    #43 2 years ago
  44. dreamcastnews

@43, true thats the horses for courses though, Capcom obviously think the 3DS is a better suited fit for Monster Hunter rather than the Vita (at the moment, of course). Nobody can predict the market situation further down the line and I’m not taking anything away from Sony but at the minute the 3DS is doing the do so from their standpoint they obviously think Monster Hunter 4 will do better numbers for Nintendo.

  45. monkeygourmet

You can’t say much about this, and im not suprised.

The 3DS is easily causing the most ‘ripples’ in gaming right now.

    Shit loads of sales
    Cheap for Nintendo to make
Cheap for devs to make games for
    Huge Install base

    Go figure…

Vita will and always was a rinse / repeat of the PSP… Maybe even worse this time round.

    #45 2 years ago
  46. Clupula

@44 – Well, yeah. I commented earlier that I don’t see this as a surprise, considering the sales of the two portables.

    #46 2 years ago
  47. malethief

It’s not that shocking to see Capcom going to where the systems with the most install base is. They did it when they jumped ship from ps3 and decided to put monster hunter tri on the wii and continue to stay with Nintendo as their development costs are cheaper and the 3DS has 30 million and rising owners.

Maybe they will give us monster hunter 3 ultimate for the vita after the 4th game comes but who knows for sure. I’d rather a multiplatform development since I own systems so I’d get it on the vita personally.

  48. OlderGamer

If I want to play Halo, I pick up a xb360. If I want to play Uncharted, I pick up a PS3. If I want to play a game(or collection of them) that are exclusive to one platform…I buy that platform. Beit ZombiU, Beyoneta 2, Zelda, Monster Hunter or whatever it is.

That is the way gaming works. It is the way it has worked for years. If you like games on a platform, that is your clue to buy and enjoy said platform/games.

Or you could, you know, take to the interwebz and complain.

MH has always been a big seller in JPN. So it makes sense that Capcom sticks on JPNs biggest system: a gameboy. Considering that, WiiU makes sense too.

  49. ManuOtaku

I really dont see the problem here, this things happen time and time again, games and developers go where they think the better venues are, since the NES and SNES era they were a lot of games and developers that jumped to sony side of things, the solution if you wanted to play those games like final fantasy was getting a sony console, now it happens with another franchise the other way around the solution is the same, i think this is normal in this business, and it will happen again in the future for sure, is normal.
