The XCOM shooter spinoff may no longer carry XCOM brand – rumor

Wednesday, 27th March 2013 17:30 GMT By Phil Owen

Internet wizard Superannuation today made a new post, and the highlight, probably, involves the shooter version of XCOM that has been in development at 2K Marin for a while now. We haven’t seen any updates on that title in a long time, and Superannuation’s data suggests it might be because they’re dropping the XCOM brand from the game.

Here is what he writes: “Last week, Take-Two registered the domains thebureau-game.com, thebureau-game.net, whathappenedin62.com, and whathappenedin62.net. These domains seem to hint at a rebranding of 2K’s beleaguered XCOM shooter, which places players in the shoes of an FBI agent in 1962.”

That’d certainly be an interesting twist, seeing as how XCOM: Enemy Unknown was at least a critical hit (we don’t know how many copies were sold) and so the brand is doing well right now. And you know how those video game companies love branding. Maybe we’ll here more about this title this week at GDC or in a couple months at E3.

That’s a very wise choice. I’m tired of seeing the desecration of old brands chosen as a solution rather than, you know, being creative and making something new. I see it as a soulless, corporate thing and indicative of triple-A detritus.

I would have been more receptive to Ubisoft’s pirate game if it wasn’t Assassin’s Creed. I would have been more receptive to the new Thief if it wasn’t a reskinned Assassin’s Creed named Thief just because.

Unless you’re doing a direct remake, leave old IPs alone. Make something NEW for a change.

So yes, this is a good choice in my opinion.

A brand is only good as long as it’s treated properly. Prejudiced or not, I don’t see this game adding anything to it. It’s yet another Take Two charity case.

How can this be possible? It’s as if someone at the top looked at that game, realized it is nothing like real XCOM and actually used his/her brain!

This was a really interesting game, ruined by pointless and brainless naming. Hopefully they don’t rename it into Thief or something…

Well, the concept was interesting. A B-Movie game about aliens involving themes seen in ’60s films, tied in with some newer sci-fi to add particularly interesting texture. The idea is actually intriguing to me as a sci-fi fan. I could just never get over that it was called XCOM but had absolutely nothing at all to do with XCOM.

Under a new brand, this might actually be okay.

I’m really looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Dropping the XCOM tie gives them more room to do their own thing @4 They were positioning this as charting the origin of the XCOM organisation, but it was always nebulous association.

Hopefully now, they go as far as they like with the initial aesthetic and theme, and explore it as an original sci-fi story.

It’s ‘cos they expect XCOM to perform well on mobile devices and will centre the future of the brand around that.
