Pokemon X & Y coming to 3DS in October 2013: trailer, screens here
Pokemon was the focus of Nintendo’s latest instalment of Nintendo Direct, hosted by president Satoru Iwata. During the stream he presented a debut trailer for Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, two 3DS titles coming to the handheld this October. Check out what happened here.

Iwata opened the feed by explaining that the cast was broadcast in seven languages simultaneously, suggesting it was going to be a big one.
It kicked off with a look back at Pokemon Blue, Red and Green, discussing the monsters that appeared on each of the game’s covers. Iwata explained that offering two versions of one game was a new concept at the time, and the way that Pokemon were different on each cart was positively received by fans, provoking them to try and ‘collect em all’.
1999′s Pokemon Gold and Silver were next, and Iwata recalled the big impact the colour of Game Boy Color added to the franchise. He also focused on the appearance of legendary Pokemon on the cover of each game.
Game Boy Advance’s Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were next, and Iwata stressed the importance of the game’s four-player tag function, which he said added more strategy to proceedings. 2004′s Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green also came with a wireless adapter, which Iwata also championed.
Iwata said Pokemon Diamond and Pearl – released on DS in 2006 – made tremendous progress in the series, thanks to offering in-built wireless via the console. Iwata said that this trend improved throughout all subsequent editions right up to Pokemon Black and white version 2 on 3DS.
Now on to the new stuff: Iwata revealed two new 3DS Pokemon games- called Pokemon X and Pokemon Y – which will launch October 2013. The trailer opened with Pikachu sending sparks flying across the globe, and saw a new female adventurer running across a 3D world teeming with new Pokemon such as squirrel Chespin, blue frog Froakie and a flaming marsupial.
Here’s the trailer:
The more you battle with your Pokemon, the stronger your bond will become, said the trailer. Seen flying above the skies was a new legendary Pokemon, and a legendary giant deer with many antlers.
We’ll have more on Pokemon X & Y as it happens, but it should reverse Nintendo’s so-called ‘weakness’ that Michael Pachter said has been dogging the company as of late.
We’ve now got screens:

Really? A Pokemon game is considered a big announcement?

That picture surely is nostalgic. Was a very big pokemon nerd back in the day.
Definitely great announcement for 3ds, although the naming sucks.

@2 Think you’re underestimating just how much money this franchise makes bud

I enjoy the Nintendo Direct videos, particularly when they are on subjects I find of interest. So well done.
Last night when I learned of an imminent Nintendo Direct centered around Pokemon, I joked that they would announce the next XD lol…But, it turns out that surprisingly, the darker style lacking aside, I was not far off!
A 3D Pokemon adventure. Wow! How great that looked. I hope that the gameplay will deliver more beyond games of old (I haven’t played any since GBA) but if it feels fresh, and the gameplay is good, I’ll probably be scrambling for my monster catching kit once more, this October. A hearty thank you to Nintendo on focusing on localisation in tandem, as it seems they have.

Well, the 3DS will doing good in Sales this Year. I always wonder why they don’t make a Big Pokemon RPG on a Console, it would sell WiiUs like shit.

Looking at the screens it looks like a propper 3D pokemon as aposed to what D&P & B&W were.
Could be pretty huge, Only on 3DS too, so 3DS is just going to sell like crazy…

@SplatteredHouse It’s been 3D for a while – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-pyzmWx0SA. It’s a mix of 2D and 3D, but still…
Anyway, is this one of the proper next Pokemon games? As in a direct follower to B&W2, or is it an offshoot?
It looks a little bit weird with the rope swinging part. Parts like that are insulting. I hope it doesn’t get too childish. Dragon Quest 9 had a good balance.

@10 I think it’s safe to say this is a main gen title, and not an offshoot. It would explain why it’s taken so long since the release of the original Black and White to get a proper sequel.
Glad to see it finally happening. Looks great.
Criticising Pokemon for looking “childish” is like criticising games for having gamey bits in this. Pokemon has always had a childish look (not a criticism) under its rather deep mechanics. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.

The PlayStation Vita will officially be lapped in Japan come October 13, I mean its over for the PS Vita. They lost Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest and no Pokemon? Thats like 3 of the top 5 franchises in Japan are exclusive to Nintendo.

@13 Sony never lost MH since it wasn’t a PSP exclusive, neither is Dragon Quest. And how do you expect Pokémon on a Sony device? Also did you forget the new IP Soul Sacrifice?
Anywho, I lost my interest to Pokémon although a 3DS exclusive is Nintendo’s way to finally get a enourmous, not to say GIGANTIC, boost on 3DS sales that are already big…
Sony, take your time, but not much, or it will be PSP all over again…

I don’t like 3D, nobody likes 3D. It just flickers and gives headaches.
It they’d done it on wiiU I might have bought one, but 3DS? No chance. I have a DS thanks, the 3D is a gimmick.
