Metal Gear Rising’s future: Platinum “would love” to make another spin-off

Monday, 17th December 2012 10:49 GMT By Dave Cook

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance launches across Europe on February 22nd, but developer Platinum Games already has hopes that another Raiden spin-off could be on the cards. Get the quotes below.

Speaking with Siliconera, Kojima Productions’ creative producer Yuki Korekado and Platinum Games’ director Atsushi Inaba discussed the potential for more Raiden-centric games, with Inaba expressing keen interest in a Platinum-developed follow up.

Korekado said, “In Rising, we got to see Raiden grow as a character and develop as a person, Beyond that, within the Metal Gear universe there are a lot of characters and stories. Within that we were able to show the value of the universe and expand on it. We were able to prove we can create branches to explain more deep stories within the universe.”

Inaba added, “I really think I was able to see Raiden grow independently and strong as a character and as a man. To be part of that was an honor. Moving forward, if Kojima Productions feels that another Raiden game is needed I would love to be a part of making Raiden’s next growth.”

Have you played the Metal Gear Rising demo yet? If so, we want to know what you think. Let us know below.

“NO! NO! NO!” said the frustrated Daniel Bryan.

It’s stupid to assume there won’t be another game, they created another subtitle for the series. If this is a success they will surely make another Rising. Maybe not Raiden but still another game.

Well consumers react better to titles with a 2 attached to it so its a giving.
And if anyone is upset by that simply blame yourselfs.
I for one will purchase any title created by Platinum Games as there a talented not that hasn’t let me down so far. Plus add to that one word: Okami… Enough said.

@5 No one complained when they made a little spin-off that had 4 games called Solid…

Well I did, many others also did. The fact that you weren’t there at the time doesn’t mean everything was fine and dandy.

@5 Kojima’s already doing prep for that idea. :D

@7 Still selled like candy right? Not going to enter the discussion if it is good or not, but you can’t deny it was succesfull

What was successful exactly? MG Acid? MG Acid 2? Ghost Babel, maybe because the popularity of that Gameboy was second to none. Spin-offs might work, I’m not denying it, but I don’t like alternative stories that aren’t taking place in the universe that gave birth to them. It’s pointless, it’s like watching The Breaking Bad tv show, and liking it a lot, then watching the Breaking Bad the porn parody and having similar sensation.

@11 Well, maybe it’s not a direct sequel to the Metal Gear Saga, but it’s about a character of the series, it’s not out of the mythology of the game.

@11 I think you didn’t understand what I meant, I was not talking about Acid, the spin-off that created 4 games was Metal Gear Solid, because Solid is a spin of the two original games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, and Solid was successful, more successful than Metal Gear itself to the point people forget about the originals.

Please elaborate on that. The fact that you say the inclusion of “SOLID” in Metal Gear Solid title is a spin-off is evidence of how clueless you are when it comes to Metal Gear series.

This myth often times gets brought up but then is quickly buried usually due to a general feeling that can be summarized with “who gives a shit?” only to be dug up later. Since Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, some fans will question why the word “Solid” is in the title of a game that does not have Solid Snake in it. This is usually due to a misconception that “Solid” in “Metal Gear Solid” refers to Solid Snake.

Well okay, actually, they are partially right.

“And the word Solid in Metal Gear Solid has three meanings. First of all, Solid Snake is a character name.”
    - Hideo Kojima (1999 in an interview)

However, the first Metal Gear title to be named Metal Gear Solid was not anything special from the previous installments simply due to Solid Snake’s presence–he was the main character in the first two Metal Gear titles. The main difference though, is the fact that Metal Gear Solid was the third game in the series (it was in fact developed as Metal Gear 3 for a while) and a three dimensional game.

“This time Metal Gear is displayed in full polygonal form, and I used “Solid” to describe the cubic structure. also, the “Solid” means to the third power mathematically”
    - Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid: Official Mission Handbook)

Ok I was wrong, I’ve read somewhere that it was due to the fact that the game were so different to the older ones that it was considered a spin-off, thus the name solid.

Well, since this has recently been confirmed by Kojima that YES, IT IS CANON! I don’t have a problem with more spin-offs within the world, as long as they are not alternate-histories, which I agree are useless. Ac!d and all them were non-canon, so they don’t count and I’ll never play them.

Personally, I’d like to see them make a Grey Fox game or maybe go back to the period between 2 & 4, if they’re going to stay within the action genre.

@16 do you have a link for that? All he said was that if the games was successful it can take the life of its own.

What, no mindfakery, srs bsns, infamous voiceovers, pompous soundtracks or shitty humor?!

. Not even Sony exclusive with 40 Gb of cutscenes?!

    This is no Metal Gear.
