GTA 5 Game Informer cover: see it here, get the details
Grand Theft Auto 5 is Game Informer’s December cover reveal and details have begun. Check out the cover below and all of the details from the magazine’s whopping 18-page gameplay feature on Rockstar’s latest.
First, here’s the cover.

Keep checking back for updates. We’re writing and updating as we go.
Well there it is. Rumours have long-persisted about GTA 5 featuring three main, playable characters, and as it happens Game Informer’s cover features three protagonists. None of them are the famed ‘Albert De Silva’ that has been rumoured as the game’s protagonist, according to the magazine’s managing editor Matt Bertz:

Game Informer said along with the cover reveal, “We introduce the three main protagonists, discuss the groundbreaking way you use them, and explore the reimagined Los Santos – the biggest open world Rockstar has created to date.”
A second piece of character art can be found at the Game Informer reveal hub, showing the character on the right brandishing a kitted out assault rifle. Check it out here.
The full Game Informer is expected later today when issues land on the site’s digital newsstand at around 5.00pm EST/8.00pm GMT, but some of the information has already been leaked out of it.
According to Kotaku, here’s just some of what’s covered in the December GI issue:
- Los Santos is bigger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV combined. It contains a wilderness, military base, and underwater exploration on the ocean floor.
- Players can switch between the three main protagonists “nearly any time.”
- The protagonists names are: Michael (older guy), Trevor (a red neck, apparently), and Franklin (the African-American). Each has its own personality, skill set, and group of friends.
- Characters you are not currently controlling will “g off and do their own thing.”
- It’s the same world as Grand Theft Auto 4 and Liberty City, so recurring characters could occur, unless hey are form the PS2-era titles.
- Randomized dynamic missions are back, and include “hitchhikers, muggers, and dead bodies.”
- Players can form friendships, but there won’t be an romancing this time out.
Meanwhile, NeoGAF has posted the following, extra information:
- Vehicles in the game include trucks, BMX and mountain bikes, ATVs, helicopters, cars, WaveRunners, dirtbikes.
- Heists will be predominant.
- Players can customize their look, but not through RPG elements such as with San Andreas.
- Missions will be more fleshed out, and side missions will be more complex – think Red Dead Redemption.
- Better driving controls were promised, as were improved shooting mechanics.
- Melee combat has been refined.
- Players can base jump, play tennis, a full round of golf, and participate in yoga, triathlons and jet skiing for recreational purposes.
Almost makes this feel like it dropped only yesterday, doesn’t it?

Isn’t the one of the left a riff on Jack Elam? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001181/

If one of the protagonists was female, I’d be more excited. But this is cool. (They’re bad guys anyway.) And I look forward to playing no matter what… Multiplayer GTA is too fun to miss.

“and explore the reimagined Los Santos – the biggest open world Rockstar has created to date.”
Wow! Didn’t think they would be able to beat the size of San Andreas. That’s a big statement.

In all seriousness though this is great. I am pretty bummed though because it looks like they are leaving out the San Fierro and Las Venturas Islands, Las Venturas was always my favorite.
But hey i can live with it if this map is the supposed 13 square miles it’s claimed to be. When R* drops big statements like “our biggest map ever”, you had best be believin’.

only one guy is the main dude, the other 2 you can call in missions to help you and such, they are optional

@9 Maps that are too big put me off unless that are good at driving progression. I fear that I’ll get GTA 5 and like the rest of them (bar 3 and VC) I won’t finish it.
Not enough hours in my busy days any more

@9 ~ San Andreas was a little under 14 square miles ~ I sure hope gta v is bigger than that.
Just Cause 2 really upped the scale of sandbox maps at 400 square miles. While I don’t expect that for gta v, 14 square miles is far too small.

@Dave
So have they confirmed that San Fierro and Las Venturas are out then? And never say never man, San Andreas was the first GTA i ever beat all the way. I did everything, every side mission, every story mission, got 100%.
I wonder with how they have this map laid out if they plan on some sort of zombie DLC, or maybe even a cheat, remember the riot cheat? That was the best game mode ever.

@Nocturnal I hope you’re right man, I want to see one of their games through without feeling pressured by other things.
Nah no confirmation yet although so far all chatter our of Rockstar leans towards Los Santos only. We won’t know fully until the GI feature drops.

During the trailer, when they are about to rob the store, someone was driving that car… 50 bucks say it is that chick from the pre-order…

3 characters would be bad, i want to be connected to 1 character. Nico and John Marston were awesome characters, i doubt they can create the same magic when you play as 3 different persons.

How is that possible on current platforms though? With limited RAM etc. This sounds almost too good to be true, like a next gen title.

You just limit amount of draw distance and detail in the area and add more disks for content. Its coming out next spring on current gen.

Thank god you can choose which character you want to be, wasnt so keen on the red neck as they are always stereotypical just like Elis off L4D2

@24 awesome, bout to read and then text everyone i know. The 3 main characters thing is gonna be great, 3 very different types of people with different perspectives to play from. Ima roleplay the shit out this game, whether they intended it or not. That redneck guy gon kill any mexicans he sees. yup.
But in all seriousness, the hitchhikers and muggers idea is awesome, i hope some earlier stuff i read about is true tho. Like driving waaay too fast will get cops attention. Smoking weed and drinking out in public will too. But im expecting these to be things that arent in, since even the name of the guy was wrong. Al De Silva. sounded cool at the time.

To be quite honest this sound really terrible. Underwater exploration? Bigger than three games? Wow, that is definitely something i wasn’t asking for.

@31 Could be real bad, depending on how they use the large amounts of space. If theres like almost nothing to do in the world, and its basically just long ass drives from point a to b, like LA Noire, then yea, no matter how great it looks or historically accurate, its gonna suck.
But i remain hopeful that they wont torture us like that.
The underwater exploration on the ocean floor sounds cool tho.

I’m always skeptical when i read such things and i will believe it when i see it. But what i’m reading so far and the screenshots…it’s mindblowing. All that on this old hardware? I’m pretty sure there will be some open spaces where there’s not much to see but i think they will try to make it as interesting as possible. Rockstar is known for crazy attention to detail and i don’t think they will fail with this one.

GTA IV is one of my all time favorites. From the looks of it, this could be the greatest game of all time! I can hardly wait (for the PC version anyway)…

I think San Andreas was an entire state, it was seriously big. I wouldn’t worry, it’ll be big enough whatever imo.
And maybe by bigger they mean more stuff in it, god knows?
