Blizzard announces staff reductions, 90% not related to game development

Blizzard has announced it has “conducted a review of its business based on current organizational needs” and because of the findings it will conduct a “global reduction in workforce” of approximately 600 employees.

The company anticipates approximately 90% of the affected employees will come from departments not related to game development and noted in the announcement The World of Warcraft development team “will not be impacted.”

“Constant evaluation of teams and processes is necessary for the long-term health of any business,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder. “Over the last several years, we’ve grown our organization tremendously and made large investments in our infrastructure in order to better serve our global community.

“However, as Blizzard and the industry have evolved we’ve also had to make some difficult decisions in order to address the changing needs of our company. Knowing that, it still does not make letting go of some of our team members any easier. We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the people impacted by today’s announcement, we’re proud of the contributions they made here at Blizzard, and we wish them well as they move forward.”

    Huh. Diablo III must really be scaring them in it likely not doing as well as they’d hoped. But it’s been looking that way for a long time.

    I’m on the Torchlight II train myself, not interested in D III at all. Maybe if they’d brought the druids back I’d have had some interest, but they chose not to do that, and without that there’s really no hook for me that makes the game seem any better than Torchlight II (and there are lots of things that make it look worse than Torchlight II).

    Edit: Worth having a read of this if you’re wondering why I think Diablo III has so many negatives compared to Torchlight II.

    600 people is quite a lot. I don’t know how big Blizzard actually is, but with Warcraft being down some millions of people, I guess that means you need less people to serve them.

    In terms of Diablo III being anything other than a bonafide cash cow – Keep dreaming eh?

    Blizzard are huge. Lets face it. Given that some of the stuff can now be done by Activision, cutting out duplication is probably what they are doing. Since its not game development.

    Its a shame but I guess they need to ensure they keep making their millions and the only way companies can do that right now, is cutting head count.
