Rubin: IW more concerned with Modern Warfare 3 gameplay than tech

Modern Warfare 3 producer Mark Rubin has said that Infinity Ward is more concerned with gameplay than trying to “push technology.”

Speaking in a round table discussion during Call of Duty XP last weekend, Rubin said IW’s philosophy for game development “isn’t about how fancy your engine is,” but more about pushing “gameplay more than anything else” and letting tech follow.

“For instance, when it came time to design the single-player campaign for Modern Warfare 3, one of the things we wanted to do was have the game exist in cities that people were familiar with,” he explained.

“So the previous CoDs were all over the world and they were real exotic, but they weren’t places that anyone that played the game would be at or go to.

“In MW3, its big cities – New York, London, Germany, Paris; it’s places that people have been or live in currently. When you see the game and its story unfold in your city, that’s a big deal. And just because it’s in a big city doesn’t mean it’s not a big deal. Cities, from a technology stand-point, posed a different problem from your standard small villages in the middle of Middle-east or Russia. The landscapes have to be built out further, geometry and buildings that we never had to worry about are all of a sudden a problem, so there is a lot of tech that goes into being able to do these big cities.

“We couldn’t just take MW2, and put a bunch of big buildings in it – there was a lot of tech that went into it – so that just shows you one example of how the design drove a tech feature that we didn’t have in the past. Not necessarily what’s the newest, hottest, cool shader, pixilation or sunlight; that kind of thing.

“We didn’t really go that path. Gameplay is the most important thing we care about and tech will support that.”

Other than a few updates made over the course of the last few years, Modern Warfare 3 runs on the Infinity Ward engine, the same engine used for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

The game engine has also been used in other Activision games, specifically an enhanced version for World at War. Quantum of Solace also used an altered version.

Modern Warfare 3 is out on November 8 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

    The game does look amazing running at 60fps.

    I watched a whole load of videos from CoDXP, and there was something about them that just didn’t seem to look like I was expecting. I thought it was the resolution of the videos, but then I saw one which was running at more than the 25fps of the other ones, and I remembered what a huge efect it had.

    Whenever I’m in the US, I’m from “Northern Europe” when meeting people. I don’t see any reason to jump into a lecture every time I have to explain where I’m from.

    Seems to me like the guy just misspoke though, I’m pretty sure Americans know where Berlin is. Even if they didn’t, I probably couldn’t pick out Idaho or Delaware on a map of the US, so I reckon it’s equal.

    @18 As much as I fear that MW3 is going the wrong way, you could say the exact same thing for Battlefield 3 once you take away all the nerdporn.

    I love the animations and the lighting, but they aren’t exactly going to do anything for the game itself.

    IW’s logic is flawed. You NEED “a fancy engine” if you want to push gameplay; MW3 is using an engine from 1999, and BF3 is using one from 2011 with superior lighting, animation, sound (that doesn’t sound like a kids toy when a gun fires), graphics, destruction and more. BF3 will have more dialogue than any FPS shooter ever made, and will have vehicles such as tanks, jets, and helos to boot. I’m not saying that I hate MW3, I’m (as well as millions of others) are getting that too because of the smoothness and simplicity of the game, but Activision and IW really doesn’t have shit on other games, and should just accept the fame that they already have instead of trying to say that their game that has hackers, no servers, and is built on a engine from 1999 is superior to other games. In fact, other CoD fans themselves are starting to see this…

    @20 I don’t think anyone has ever tried to make the argument that the tech of CoD is somehow more advanced than anything on the market today. The same thing goes for Counter-Strike, running on an engine from 1998, which is the most played game on Steam at the moment, and Counter-Strike: Source, running on an engine from 2004, which is right now among the most sold on the same platform.

    Say what you will about DICE and their games, but they couldn’t even make proper hitboxes, or leaves that didn’t interrupt bullets with their last game.

    The point is, as impressed as you might be with what’s under the hood, if the car is no fun to drive, it matters fuck all. Which I think is the point he’s trying to make, and the point that most people who enjoy CoD try to make when faced with something as silly as “My game has more things to put on the back of the box than yours”.

    Not that graphics aren’t great. They’re great when they support a superior design, and I’m sure they do sway a lot of peoples decisions on what to take a fancy to, but they quite obviously aren’t the reason why people keep buying and playing games like CoD and Counter-Strike.

    @22, Yeah, I guess you’re right. You don’t see games boasting about their engines, but still, battlefield 3 is looking surreal, and the frostbite engine looks like it seriously kicks ass. You are eventually going to hit your limit if you use the same engine over and over again, and I think MW2 was that limit. Now IW is making a modded version of MW2 with new weapons and perks and such. Its cool, but is it truly a new game? I guess as long as its fun…..

    Basically I don’t disagree with any of that. CoD hasn’t really changed since the first game, it’s just iterated on what it does – perhaps with the slight exception of morphing into Modern Warfare.

    You can always argue who achieves the most, but at the end of the day, I’d say the designer outdoes the engineer, when it comes to forming a game. The engineer achieves incredible things, but ultimately he does it to enable the designer.

    I love physics, I love animations, I love pretty textures and flashy stuff being super flashy, but ultimately I need to enjoy what I’m doing within that golden cage.

    Obviously Battlefield 3 is winning people over, and deservedly so for all the things they’re showing. That alone is testament to what tech can do for a game – but will most of those people be playing it ten years from now? We’ll see. It won’t be for the graphics.

    CoD is a series and most games in a series are similar to eachother (FIFA, PES, Battlefield, etc.).

    If CoD is still going that successfull with such an old engine then EA should better start to wonder why. It’s not about fancy effects, photo-realistic buildings, destructable environments, etc. And it should never ever be the first priority in a game.

    Overall: Why should they change their gameplay?! CoD is a fast-paced arcade shooter and that’s what it should stay. That’s why it’s so successful. Jesus, if you prefer other gameplay then buy another game that suits your likes.
    It seems like Battlefield fans want to turn a second Battlefield out of CoD but that just wrong.
    People can go around all they want praising Battlefields technolgy but the majority is enjoying the CoD franchise. Why? Because they like the way it plays and not the way it looks.

    @28 ok. My point is that MW3 will be great, but eventually it will be left in the dust. Activision has the money and power to probably make some fantastic tech, and with their talent, I’m sure that they could easily make something crazy. But for now, BF3 looks like it will kick ass in a way that no FPS has done before. You guys are saying that tech doesn’t make a game, But have you even seen BF3 gameplay? Either way, the open beta is coming out this month, so DL it for whatever platform you play on and see what I’m talking about for yourself. DICE has been making battlefield multiplayer-only games sense CoD started, so I’m sure that the developers behind the tech will deliver.

    I will download the BF beta but I know already that I’m not gonna buy the game because BF3 will still be the slow-paced war simulator like its predecessors. Games in a series play similar to eachother that’s why people keep buying games like Metal Gear Solid, FIFA, CoD, Battlefield, etc.
    But there’s people like me that prefer fast action like CoD is offering. I just don’t have fun with BF gameplay you know. The great technology they are using won’t help me. :/

    Also, even if the technology gets better it can also bring a series downhill in terms of quality. Best example here is the “SmackDown! vs Raw”. 2006-2007 were fantastic games (kinda “arcady”) but after that everything needed more fancy anymations, cooler graphics, basically more realism which changed the gameplay experience way too much. The gap between old title and new title became too huge.

    A lot of gamers still mourn after the first few titles of a famous series because they were the best. It’s basically same in the movie industry.
