Activision’s just announced Call of Duty: Black Ops has grossed $650 million within its first five days on sale worldwide.

The astonishing figure has bettered the $550 million made by Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 last year, and has “shattered theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars.”

Also confirmed by Activision was that 5.9 million hours have been spent on multiplayer by the end of its launch day, with 2.6 million Live users playing MP in its first day.

“With a record breaking performance on Xbox LIVE, home to the world’s largest Call of Duty gaming community, Call of Duty: Black Ops has already carved out its legacy as one of the biggest video games in history,” said Xbox boss Don Mattrick.

“We congratulate our partners at Activision and Treyarch and are proud to continue offering the best Call of Duty experience to our 25 million global Xbox LIVE members by launching all Call of Duty map packs first on Xbox 360.”

Naturally, big Bobby Kotick is very pleased.

“Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for two consecutive years across all forms of entertainment,” said the Activision boss.

“The title’s success illustrates the mass appeal of interactive entertainment as millions of consumers are choosing to play Call of Duty: Black Ops at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media.

“The number of people playing online and the number of hours they are playing demonstrates how online gaming has become a mainstream form of entertainment and certainly validates Activision Blizzard’s leadership role in online entertainment”

The title also became the biggest PS3 launch for Amazon.com and GameStop ever.

“Call of Duty: Black Ops has been an incredible success on PlayStation 3,” added SCEA CEO, Jack Tretton.

“Treyarch’s latest efforts are driving unprecedented traffic to the PlayStation Network with the flagship online experience this holiday season.”

Black Ops sold 5.6 million units in the US and UK within in its first day on sale, with 2 million units sold in the UK in its first week.

But despite the big numbers, Activision is “excited about the performance of Call of Duty: Black Ops, but given that it is still very early in the holiday shopping season, the company remains cautiously optimistic.”

So moral of the story don’t worry about making a great game just market the shit out of it. 5 commericials, specials on TV, famous bands doing the soundtrack. Could have spent half the money from marketing into the game and made it that much better.

“There are many reasons for the success of Black Ops, but first and foremost is the fact that our team at Treyarch delivered a truly awesome game, and in the process have established themselves as one of the most talented developers in the world,”

    Hahaha

    Riiiiight…

In fairness, it is actually a great game.

Coming into Black Ops, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Treyarch Call of Duty titles. Didn’t like CoD3, didn’t like WaW (although thought it was a bit of an improvement over COD3).

With Black Ops, they’ve exceeded my expectations for it. Bravo Treyarch, well deserved.

..and the world mourns the death of original games like enslaved which overall is a vastly more entertaining game, imho. I am ashamed that I bought black ops cheap at the supermarket and while it’s enjoyable SP it’s overall a forgetable experience. And the gunfire sound effects are shocking. Compare the sound of an AK-47 in MoH and in CoD….

Congrats Treyarch. I gotta say I thought BO was gonna be worse than MW2 and in the contrary is actually way better imo. =)Only bad thing is that maps will be on Xbox first that’s the only downsider I have. F**K YOU ACTIVISION AND MICROSOFT! lol =P but ok I can wait I guess I’ll be busy with KILLZONE 3 by the time they release it =P

Sorry to high jack the thread but I notice no one is covering the patch to the PS3 version last night. Was wondering if anyone had seen a list of fixes.

Just your opinion. There is nothing great, except of a solid Multiplayer component with 14 maps.

All killsteaks are from MW 2 just balanced. Basically it’s a reskin.

    and Super awesome marketing campaign.

4.4 million of those 5.9 million hours online was spent trying to find a game, or being kicked out of lobbies if my friends experience is anything to go by…

@12 lol ‘Lag Ops’… I have had to put this aside till they sort it out. M16 went from 2 bursts/kill to 4/kill, which is a no go-er. Kicked frequently too, and often can’t get matches. Shame as it was great fun the first 2 days.

Forced myself to try the single player but struggled to stay awake – pacing… what pacing. The whole thing’s like a daft nicholas cage movie without the *cough* great dialogue. They’ve gone mad with the special effects instead of improving the Ai which they borrowed from the shooting gallery ducks of a fairground. Eye-wateringly tedious.

    @12 and 14
MW2 was laggy and choppy for the first 2months. They fixed it and it became a great online experience. The same will happen for Black Ops

Wonder how much money Treyarch will see of that as a bonus?…..

@12 said “most people are rich and stupid” I nominate this as the stupidest thing said on this site this year. You sir, are a few cents short of a dollar if you believe that. Call of duty as a whole brings a solid multiplayer shooter experience, period. There is no argument. You might not like the game and that is your right. But it is so successful for a reason. Look at the article on this site about the xbox live numbers. The last 4 call of duty games are still the most played games on the system. You can’t take that away.

“MW2 was laggy and choppy for the first 2months.”

Only on your system. MW2 maybe had few glitches but it was smooth as fuck, while Black Ops on steam for example:

    Server downtime
    Lags all over the place
Multicore CPU recognition problem on all systems

At least with MW2 you can play without any lag.
