Black Ops pre-orders surpassing those for Modern Warfare 2 at GameStop

Friday, 8 October 2010 16:13 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

blackops

GameStop has announced pre-order sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops are outperforming those of Modern Warfare 2.

According to the chain’s SVP of merchandising, Bob McKenzie, the title has seen “all-time, record reservations” and are ahead of where Modern Warfare 2 was this time last year, a title which “previously set the industry standard”.

Back in July, Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson said his retail contacts claimed Black Ops pre-orders were accumulating faster than Modern Warfare 2, and he predicated the game could sell 12 million units during the holiday season alone.

Wilson also said CoD titles always set a sales record upon release, with each respective game doing better than the previous one in the series.

Black Ops is due for release on November 9 for PC, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360.

Thanks, IGN.

    The big question is, given that it’s likely to do 12 mil+ sales in the ‘holiday period’, will Acti do exactly what the did with the last steaming turd of a CoD game and ramp up the price to £50, because they know that mewling ten year olds and their equally disgusting parents will pay up?

    Look, it doesn’t make sense to us true gamers for this franchise to sell so freakin well while other great games that are better or just as good sell so little. We love all sorts of games and feel that that 12 million is sort of undeserving when there are equally as good to better games out there but here’s the thing…the majority of console owners are not true gamers. They buy the consoles as a side entertainment, as the “look what I got”, and as something to do when they are bored. Call of Duty is the most universal name in gaming right now so of course the non-true-gamers are going to buy this game over something like Castlevania or Bioshock so that they can play with friends and family on occasion and remain in the now/in/hip/cool/popular (lemmings). Mix them in with hardcore gamers that buy every game that comes out and mix that in with the semi devoted gamers that buy all the AAA titles and you got one massive hit of a game.

    @10 – i agree entirely i’m just dumbfounded how they could potentially best MW2 in sales? O__O

    MW2 was a true sequel to the game that kicked off the CoD craze, it was practically the dark knight for gaming in terms of media and hype.

    Black Ops tho? It hasn’t got any of that on its side and heck i think Black Ops looks like a better game =/

    #11 4 years ago
  12. Erthazus

    @10 Can’t say better.

    But can’t do something with myself too. I’m going to buy Black Ops probably and will be dissapointed again. AGAIN for F sake.

    It’s just this franchise is so overrated… If only these preorders could justify it’s game than no problem.

    @AHA-Lambda, “MW2 was a true sequel to the game that kicked off the CoD craze, it was practically the dark knight for gaming in terms of media and hype.”

    Acti said that they are going to spend money on the Black Ops marketing much more than the MW2.

    I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of MW2… but at least I sort of got where the excitement was coming from for it. But Black Ops? Just not seeing it. Infinity Ward were one thing, Treyarch quite another.

    That said, my Brother (casual-ish gamer) was really excited about this because he said that Bungie were developing it rather than Treyarch. Not entirely sure how he got that one in his head, I guess it had something to do with Bungie signing with Activision.

    “Acti said that they are going to spend money on the Black Ops marketing much more than the MW2.”

    yea i remember but does just putting more adverts out mean getting back up to 20m+ sales? MW2 was in such a unique position that i dont think can be easily replicated just by their marketing alone (which so far hasn’t got into full swing yet admittedly) that is why this has left me literally flabbergasted

    #17 4 years ago
  18. Dralen

    @10 That was spot on.

    I hate myself for buying all the different games out there, especially this game, which I WILL get because I have to play everything. As spiderLAW said; there are alot better games out there, but the Call of Duty games are the “cool” games to get.

    What’s wrong with you man? There was absolutely nothing wrong with what i said in that comment at all. You don’t have to feel offended by it at all. I enjoy call of duty and in FACT I have commented saying that i want Black Ops on day 1 while you have not been seen commenting on any of the Black Ops articles lately.

    Truth is, there are still other games that have had more put into them. There has been better games with far much more to offer than any COD games has (and I legitimately reach level 70 10th prestige myself) but they never see anything even close to the sales that COD has. I’m not saying that COD shouldn’t sell well, because it should really (I’ve owned every COD since the 1st one that was a PC exclusive) sell well but it does not deserve 12 million while other games that are just as good or better sell less than, close to, or barely above 1 million.

    I will be buying it but that wont stop me from buying other great games like Castlevania, MOH, Fable 3 (maybe), Rock Band 3, Crysis 2, Killzone 3, LBP2, GT5 etc etc etc….while some people will ignore those great games because they are going to buy only COD. Thats where it all doesnt make sense.

    Dont be a brat Giga. I was in no way trying to dis your beloved COD franchise.

    @25:

    Ok, sorry, I didn’t mean to pick on you in particular, it’s just that I’m finding it difficult to understand why, after almost an entire year, almost every CoD story has an immediate flood of whinging comments.

    I mean… “Every time a CoD game sells, a little piece of me dies inside.“!?!?

    Seriously!

    It’s as if people enjoy making themselves feel bad so much that they do it on purpose…

    ‘Oh, what’s this? A CoD story? Let me read it, so I can feel annoyed at how much more successful it’s becoming! Grrrr….’

    And as for how much CoD deserves to sell, well in all honesty, I don’t see why the so-called better games can’t do better.

    It’s definitely not just because of peer pressure, or because CoD is the latest teen craze.

    MW2 is a top quality game. It has some seriously terrible flaws, but what it does well, it does better than any other game in it’s genre.

    That’s why every other FPS tries to be like it, and why even racing devs are calling it’s name out to try and sell their game.

    There are other good games, but let’s face it, most of them just don’t have a ‘must buy’ appeal. Not only that, but most other good games give you 50 hours or so, then there isn’t really a draw to come back.

    Right now, CoD has that draw, which is why it’s selling, and why people are still playing it every night. So when other devs can figure out a way to make competing games which are as addictive, CoD will eventually fade into the background.

    #30 4 years ago
  31. Erthazus

    “‘Oh, what’s this? A CoD story? Let me read it, so I can feel annoyed at how much more successful it’s becoming! Grrrr….’”

    It’s related to games. People read NEWS about games because they are interested in them and whats happening in the gaming industry. People comment because they want to do it and they have an opinion on that.

    “Right now, CoD has that draw, which is why it’s selling, and why people are still playing it every night. So when other devs can figure out a way to make competing games which are as addictive, CoD will eventually fade into the background.”

    The most addictive game is not the best in it’s genre.
    I play World Of Warcraft. Sure it’s a legend, but compared to few new gems it’s NOT the best MMORPG game in the MMORPG genre no matter how you dance around it.
    If someone addicted it’s their problem that people sit on one CRACK.

    im getting the black ops hardened edition i will be enjoying the zombie co op the single player and of course multiplayer and enjoying myself and there is a reason why it is selling people enjoy call of duty games and this case its treyarch doing this game not pathetic infinity ward. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest that it is selling well i hope it goes up by another 5 million or so people want this game obviously it will mean more people to play co op and regular multiplayer with i just laugh at all the pathetic whining.I don’t really care myself that activision is the publisher if a game is a good game and i enjoy it the publisher of the game is no concern to me.

    Ive said it before, ill say it again COD is at the top right now in terms of sales, quality, and when youre at the top, the cool thing to do for some people who want to stand out is to say oh its shit etc.

    MW and MW 2 have raised the bar for what can be done in a fps and nothing comes close. Will Black Ops be better then MW or MW 2? I doubt it but it will still sell more then any fps this year Count on it.

    I feel CoD is overrated, i enjoyed playing MoH as a kid, then Battlefront as an early teen, then i picked up a CoD game & saw nothing in it other than a decent looking fps. The campaigns in every CoD game have been boring, the only one i tolerated enough to complete was World @ War & the only multiplayer component i enjoyed were the zombies which did get repetetive after a while, there are many better fps around. Although i have no intention of buying this(well atleast new, CoD4 still sells @ the same price as any new game here, ridiculous!), i couldn’t care less if others do, i just thing the hype is underserved & it’s probably the most overrated game ever, well Mario takes the cake, but this isn’t far off.

  41. spiderLAW

    @39
    Very much disagree. I cant care any less about whats cool or not so when i speak about its quality being overly hyped, i mean it. Its not a God among other FPS. Its just another great FPS game.
    Thats not really what bothers me most about COD. This does:
    Guy1: “Hey nice to meet you. You a gamer?”
    Guy2: “Hell yeah im a gamer. I love playing xbox”
    Guy1: “O me too. I love playing PS3. What games you play?”
    Guy2: “Modern Warfare 2″
    Guy1: “……………………”
    Guy2: “……………………”
    Guy1: “………………….and?”
    Guy2: “huh? and what? thats what i play”
    Guy1: “O. Good. Ummm…See ya later then.”
    Guy2: “yeah, when i spank you at MW2. LOL”
    Guy1: “k…………..um…l8r”

    MW2 was not as good as COD4. Black Ops looks to be so much better than any other COD game. Black Ops is the first COD since COD4 to actually bring some new experiences to the gaming table and thats why i want it on DAY1. Trust me, ill be one of the first to be 2nd prestige :)

    So am I the only one who finds it just a tad ironic, that the people who seem to hate Bobby Kotick the most, are the ones trying to tell everybody else what they can or can’t play, like or not like, buy or not buy?

    Douche or no douche – at least that guy believes in peoples right to make up their own minds.

    You’re never going to set an empirical standard for what makes a game greater than all others. Quite arguably there’s no game for all takers.
