Street Fighter x Tekken announced at ComicCon

sf x tekken

It’s official: Capcom vs Namco has been announced at ComicCon.

Or to give it its more specific name, Street Fighter x Tekken. And it’s 2D!

This is Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono’s big announcement that has been hinted at for weeks.

Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada interupted the panel, then followed up by a trailer that featured SF’s Ryu and Tekken’s Jin in SFIV’s ink style, before the game was demoed live.

The fight showed a sort of tag-in style feature similar to Marvel vs Capcom, and featured Street Fighter’s Ryu and Chun-Li vs Tekken’s Jin and Nina.

The crossover has been talked about for a while, a year ago at least, according to Ono and Harada.

Two titles are to come: one being developed by Ono-san and Capcom, the other from Harada-san and Namco Bandai, known as Tekken x Street Fighter. The first title will be coming from the former, with the two to have each graphical style of both series.

It’s for PS3 and 360. As for the release, it won’t be “for a while.”

Press release, trailer, shots and the gameplay demo (thanks, GameVideos) are below.

THE HEAVYWEIGHTS OF THE FIGHTING WORLD COLLIDE AS CAPCOM ANNOUNCES STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN

London, UK – July 24 – Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games today announced that Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®. The title will make history as fighters from these two bastions of the fighting genre come together for the very first time.

Utilising the same technology that powered Street FighterTM IV & Super Street FighterTM IV, TekkenTM characters such as Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams will make the transition into the Street FighterTM universe having been re-imagined using the much loved art style of these seminal titles; while retaining their unique characteristics and signature moves as they go head to head with classic brawlers from the Street Fighter franchise in what promises to be the ultimate match up.

As in Street Fighter IV, gameplay will feature fully realised 3D character models battling for domination in both new and familiar highly detailed 2D environments that are brought to life with engaging animations. In addition to modes such as Versus and Training that will feature new enhancements to make the fighting experience more in-depth and enjoyable, Street Fighter X Tekken will include Tag Team combat where players select two fighters to deliver knockout assist attacks and special combos.

The announcement, which took place at Comic-Con in San Diego in front of thousands of Street Fighter fans, was made by the Producer of Street Fighter X Tekken, Yoshinori Ono, and Tekken series Director, Katsuhiro Harada. Commenting on the origins of this project Yoshinori Ono said: “This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”

Street fighter has semi magical moves(fireballs, electric shock etc), tekken has semi realistic moves, SF’ s characters don’t have a lot of moves, tekken’ s characters have infinite combo.
How can they combine them?

PS:
Greedy software house(capcom)+fanboys= street fighter 4, costumes for sf4, super street fighter 4, costumes for ssf4, marvel vs capcom 3(and obviously costumes), street fighter x tekken(and namco’s tekken x street fighter), obviously costumes for sfxt, street fighter 3 online… do i forget something?

Mortal Combat vc DC, Marvel vs. Capcom, Street Fighter vs. Tekken… what’s next? Snow White vs. Alice? Tom & Jerry vs. Vinny the Puh? DuckTales vs. Chip ‘n’ Dale? Looking forward to see how Webby kills Daisy Duck =)

@51 Oh god, this old complaint.

Greedy would be making people pay for a new character. Costumes are entirely cosmetic. Greed =/= Profit.

@50, which is exactly why they should not do a sequel but restart the whole series & actually think through the storyline, not just slap together some dumb ideas, but in recent events, seems to be exactly what Capcom does best, some of their stupid ideas work, others do not, we’ll have to see how this game goes before we start to judge

@53: def jam, tekken, soul calibur etc let you make an unlimited number of costumes for free, capcom gives you only a pair of costumes and let you pay FOR EVERY SINGLE additional costume.
You are right, capcom is not avid! XD

(@ Anti-DLC people) and there was me thinking Capcom are running a business… If you don’t want the stuff then the DLC is well, you know… OPTIONAL!

Personally I think we may see some of the Tekken characters throw projectiles! I can’t wait to see Capcom’s interpretation of the Tekken characters!! Bryan VS Sagat, Zangeif VS King or even those paired up! CAN’T WAIT :p

@58, the people are angry that those choices have been stripped from the game yet has still been charged full price for an ‘un’finished game, i don’t remember, for a random example, GTA charging for optional in-game items & there was no reason to, ofc it wasn’t nessecary to the finished game, but we apprecitaed it nevertheless

Calling a bunch of costumes “stripping” out a game means you really need to change your priorities. Heck, they added an extra game mode COMPLETELY FOR FREE!

And people still bitch. Dear god.

The game is just as complete with or without them. My Hadoken is not going to hit for harder if I don’t have Ryu’s extra costume, and I’m not being made to buy them.

Then what are you complaining about?

You’re getting fussed over there being a pip in an absolutely delicious apple.

I have finally realized! Capcom is generous!
SF’ s fanboys want to spend money in futile costumes so capcom, instead of include them in the game, sold them to make fans happy! XD

Obviously costumes in combats are futile(not true, see sc4 and def jam), but i think that in 2010 a 3d beat’ em up must have an editor for custom outfits, but evidently some sh doesn’t agree(guess why?).

I can’t recall what one but one of the Capcom fighters used to have a color editor for custumes.

Wait i don’t get it. Will there actually be two different versions for sale when it comes out? One for 3D and 2D? Or will there simply be a ingame option for that?

@OlderGamer

I used to have some pretty sweet palette edits on CvsSNK 2 iirc

@63? Def Jam? Seriously? You’re comparing this to Street Fighter? I would rather they concentrated on balancing the games and the characters instead of wasting time adding some pointless costume editor.

Street Fighter is not Soul Calibur, and it doesn’t need a costume editor. Any player of significant skill at the game doesn’t care either.

@64 This was a very common feature in most of the PSone era fighting games. A few of them had it. It was pretty cool.

@65 There will be two separate games, released at different times. One will use the Street Fighter engine, the other will use the Tekken engine.

It’s very strange how fighting games have suddenly become popular again. I really did think they were ‘done’.

Shows how much you know. :p

It may be ‘done’ but it’s never ‘over’… As they say. :)

@67:Oh please don’ t be a fanboy!

Your word:
“This was a very common feature in most of the PSone era fighting games. A few of them had it. It was pretty cool”
Referred to color choosing.

So other brands’ costume editor: pointless
Old street fighter color chooser: pretty cool

The love for street fighter can really brainwash fanboys’ heads?

@70 Fanboy? Pleeeease. I’ve played almost every single fighting game that has been released in the last 10 years. I’m at least vaguely proficient at a few of them – SSFIV and Virtua Fighter V being my personal favourites – and I have a basic grasp of Tekken as well – current favourite characters being Leo and Bruce.

There’s a big difference between a costume editor and a palette swap editor. The latter was very easy to do because every sprite was made up of only about 16 colours. It was incredibly easy to implement.

Games have come a long way since then, and cost significantly more to make to boot. Nowadays? A full blown character design feature is resource time that can be better spent balancing the game, something Capcom did an amazing job doing with SSFIV now less.

It doesn’t need a “dress your own Ryu” mode, and Street Fighter’s extremely dynamic fighting would make character creation a mess, especially with the game’s art style. It’s extra baggage that this particular game simply doesn’t need.

If I want character creation, I’ll play Soul Calibur. If I want to dress my characters up like sluts and badly colour coordinated pimps, I’ll play Tekken.

Ok i’ll explain you one thing.
If a 3d character have a single outfit you can make a simple model with that outfit.
If you plan to make different outfits you have to make the nude model, the clothes, the physics for the clothes and other things. All things that take a lot of time.

Oh and don’ t forget that most of dlcs are builded or ideated before the game release.

Developers of street fighter and tekken & co write all the codes to support different clothes, the only difference is that tekken & co give you clothes for free, capcom instead wants your money. ;)
