Halo 3 outsells Sony’s big exclusives combined

Wednesday, 9 June 2010 18:56 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Aaron Greenberg has gone on the Twitter record to state that according to new NPD data, Halo 3 has outsold a number of Sony’s big hitters.

According to his tweet, Halo 3 has outsold both Resistance 1 and 2, Uncharted 1 and 2, Killzone 2 and God of War III combined.

Greenberg didn’t provide the exact sales figures, but it doesn’t take a massive stretch of the imagination to know that Halo 3 sold $GOD, but better than all sales of those huge Sony titles combined? That’s impressive.

We’ve mailed Microsoft and NPD both to see if we can get the exact figures.

    *Huge slow clap*

Hey Greenberg!111 Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec game sold for 14 million copies worldwide, um yeah.

It’s just sad… And by the way. Even if Killzone 2, Resistance 1,2 are MEH games, they still, even without combining together are better games then Halo 3 and thats the most important part. Uncharted 2 or God Of War 3? I don’t even want to compare.

    #3 5 years ago
  4. The Hindle

Really Reask Halo 3 was a massive pop culture event, to expect any other game to sell at that level especally mainly new ips is a tad unfair. A more fair comparison is to compare Halo 3s total sales to what GT 5 eventually does.

Oh i know man its the whole Sonys games dont sell debate again which is so old, Uc 2 sold 3.5m copies in 3 month not bad could do 5m by time Uc 3 is out. Id hardly call that bad. If you compare non Halo games from Microsoft to Sonys games it evens out.

@7…nahhh come on…i love fable. gears is not exactly my cup of tea but a good game. mass effect…and many more. i think ms catched up with good exclusive ip´s…still sony is the exclusive big boss in terms of quantity. but both have some very solid exclusives…now that square enix seems to permanently “jump in” it will get a little tougher for sony imo. i admired sony for all their sweet japanese exclusives. – ico – shadow of the colossus – final fantasy etc. they got a massive jrpg fan crowd because of that. they wont loose em to ms, because most of these people think bill gates is the reincarnation of luzifer (and maybe they are right), but if they start loosing more and more japanese exclusivity flair they´re fucked…

i notice he’s also left out some other great exclusives e.g. mgs4,infamous, heavy rain etc
so im guessing those numbers, while imressive, are very close

These sales stat arguments are boring. It’s so easy to make it work in your favour.

    Here’s one:

    In Japan, Metal Gear Solid 4 outsold Halo 3, Wars + ODST, Gears of War 1 + 2, Forza 2 + 3, Fable II, Left 4 Dead 1 + 2, PGR3 + 4.

It’s amazing what you can do with stats.

    (Based on VGChartz figs).

  36. Erthazus

@26 Except that these games sold very well and praised among gamers and had no monstrous brainwashing marketing campaigns.

Halo 3 had nothing at that time. Graphics, design, story and everything else was a giant flop. For me itfelt like M$ forced it’s marketing campaign and they did an outstanding job.

We can even compare like old Half-Life 2 gameplay videos with Halo 3 for example.

and Halo 3 sold for like 2x then Half-Life 2. We can compare Unreal, Quake and e.t.c.

If sales are quality, then we are doomed to play for the rest of our lives with Wii Sports Resort.

    #36 5 years ago
  37. Mike

I wholeheartedly disagree with you. As did 99% of the of the gaming press, and quite a few million gamers.

You need to accept that although you didn’t like it – which you’re entitled to – for a console/online shooter, it’s the best there is.

    #37 5 years ago
  38. NiceFellow

He’s probably right (I presume he means lifetime, although GoW3 is a little early in its life).

Halo 3 must have sold hugely in US for MS. Hugely. Way above what those other titles have sold on PS3 – and BTW I suspect there’s a chance that if we were comparing Halo 2 on Xbox to a bunch of PS2 exclusives in US the result would be the same.

But all it tells us how vital (possibly critical) Halo is to Xbox brand success. It doesn’t mean 360 is somehow better or more successful nor that it automatically will be.

It just tells us the demand for Halo in US is much higher than those other titles combined. And heck, if he’s being prissy about that he should consider certain Nintendo titles have probably outsold Halo 3 and a bunch of other 360 titles combined.

The thing greenburg fails to mention is that all those games (minus resistance 1 perhaps?) were/are better than halo 3. The several exclusives ps3 has over the few microsoft has can mean that people who own ps3 spread their money out across different exclusives rather than forced to buy the few that microsoft has.

  46. Galactic_Barret

    Congratulations, MS.

Still, though, I would like to think that, recently, Sony has gotten the gamer’s attention with the quality of their games as of late. I didn’t buy LBP1, but the great word-of-mouth, its BC and sheer advancements its sequel made has LBP2 on my radar. Halo is a cash cow, and probably very good, but I like how Sony is playing their hand. TLG, LBP2, and whatever they’re working on may never reach Halo’s status, but I’d be ok with that as long as they can keep me intrigued, excited and happy. That should be made into a chart: How content gamers are, since it should be the only that matters.

@Mike, Jesus. I don’t want to say that you are wrong or anything. But i think you must open your eyes for a little bit and try some great multiplayer games.
Halo maybe something special to you as the first Person shooter, or Master Chief is your favourite Iconic character, or you are a fan of Halo universe, but it’s not the best Online shooter. Halo is basically Unreal/Quake 3:Arena on steroids and just slow. Simple explanation? It’s Not. Enough. Deep. Compared to other shooters.
As much as i hate Killzone 2 or Modern Warfare series, they are for example have deep gameplay mechanics. They have deep character customization, Unreal and Battlefield series on the other hand for example use innovation in some areas, like for example Destruction, physics, vehicles and other stuff.
Halo have nothing really. It’s just simple. What Halo does right, that any other shooter don’t? If you have an explanation on that? Awesome, but i don’t think so.

@42 If you own a company (will never happen) and you invest in a diverse range of products that most people believe have quality but don’t sell, what are you, as the owner of the business going to do? Continue to invest in a diverse quality range of products that simply not enough people buy to merit further investment, or do you perhaps have a bit of a rethink?

Killzone 2 didn’t sell, Heavy Rain didn’t sell, Uncharted 2 didn’t sell, LBP didn’t sell etc. etc. Although they’re all quality titles, I very much doubt you’ll be seeing many more of “these types” of games if they continue to fail at retail.

    @54: What’s the PS3′s install base?

    #59 5 years ago
  60. Boris Fett

    @59 35.7 million as of March 2010.

People seem to forget that when Gran Turismo 3 sold like hot-cakes, the PS2 had sold at least twice this many units in the same span of time.

Unlike now, where we have two valid core gaming consoles (and a third that *sometimes* delivers), the PS2 was the only console that developers and publishers needed to support to be successful.

The biggest victim of having two lead consoles like we do right now is the first party developers, who have a much smaller portion of the pie to eat from now than they used to.

    #65 5 years ago
  66. Gekidami

“That’s simply not enough by anyone’s standards.”

And by the ‘standards’ you’re setting only about 10 franchises across all platforms manage to sell ‘well’.

    #66 5 years ago
  67. Mike

It’s all about context. These are major first party exclusives that seperate PS3 from the pack.

Stop being so defensive. It’s rather tiring.

So are the ones i listed dude.

STOP FEEDING HIM! He has the power of a thousand XBOTS now. Just back off the article and attack him after M$ E3 press conference. (that’s when he’ll be weak and vulnerable after another failed NATAL demo) :D

    #70 5 years ago
  71. Boris Fett

All that matters at the end of the day is that those PS3 exclusive games are amazing games that are unique to the console.

And most of those games live up to that promise, and then some. The first party titles that have been pumped out by Sony over the last year and a half have been nothing short of amazing.

Who cares how well something sells? Sales have never been an effective barometer for quality.

Look at the time period that Halo 3 was released compared to Uncharted 2

    #72 5 years ago
  73. Galactic_Barret

Ok, if we’re doing the apples to oranges, how about apples to apples? BKNB vs. R&C? A. Wake vs. HR? Forza 2 vs. GT5:P?

This is kinda a douche thing to say, I feel, but it has always seemed like the XBox platform was the go-to console for shooters, since the OG XBox days. It seems like anyone I know with one has at least H3 and/or MW2. Thats a battle any fanboy should cede. What about other genres? Or should we keep on waging a war that was decided before its birth?

Only retards are turning this argument into a 360/PS3 thing. As per fucking usual.

The xbox has alot of people under 16 year thats why fps games and other shooters sell well if they released Heavy Rain on the Xbox it wouldnt sell shit

    #75 5 years ago
  76. theevilaires

why can’t it be a PS3/360 thing? why you gotta put the 360 part first :D

    #76 5 years ago
  77. Gekidami

Thats because thats what this is about. Courtesy of Greenberg.

What? You think he decided to point out how it sold better then several PS3 exclusives as a random example?

    #77 5 years ago
  78. Mike

Yeah, but “this” discussion is about sales compared to install base. I never mentioned 360. I never said “360s games sell better.” I said, that first party PS3 games haven’t sold as well as Sony would’ve liked and that sales and quality aren’t inseparable.

@74, but you actually did it.

PS: BTW, Mass Effect 2 sold for 1 million and 770000 copies. Mass Effect 1 sold for 2 millione and we see a decline on that franchise, not to mention that for 2 weeks ME2 sold for 1.230 million copies.
While Heavy Rain as a niche game sold for 1 million and 300000 copies overall and still selling.

  103. polygem

talking about variety. i agree that there is more variety on the ps3 and ms should do anything they can to get some more variety (square enix FFXIII and maybe more? was a good start). sure they got ME and fable but it still is pretty racer – shooter dominated. xbox needs a solid platformer ip like r+c…problem is platformers don´t sell so good anymore – shame – (ok some italian brothers always sell like hot cakes)…still i like the 360. and while this already is fanboyzone here i tell you why. i just LOVE the 360 controller and always hated the dualshock. i will never get used to that flumsy thing and the uninspired design of the psn…ah and home..the rest of the ps3 is awesome.

3 year old sequel to 9 year old franchise, backed by $40 worth of marketing outsells 6 games that have much less marketing power behind them.

Well it better f’n do Greenberg cos it’s what your Xbox lives for.

What brought on the nonsense this year? Is it a symptom of Sony’s success, that suddenly the fanboys are drawing steel over the pecking order? We haven’t had this kind of nonsense in a while, like E3 is like some kind of sporting event.

@Cort: the significant Anglophonic countries have basically the same 360:PS3 sales ratio. EDIT: he was talking about the specific games, not the consoles, my bad.

    #120 5 years ago

Similar to today’s comment about attach rate of games in the UK. When you look for only the positives you tend to ignore what is really happening.
If it is true that people in the EU are getting games from the UK, then their claim of a high attach rate in the UK is probably incorrect. Halo 3 outsold those other games in America where there are many more Xboxs than PS3… had they included WW sales numbers then you could probably cut out 3 of 4 of those 6 games to form an equal number. Doesn’t seem too pretty now Regarding attach rates; they likely base it off of total software sales divided by total system sales. If you were to compare EU attach rate in total not just UK then we’d get a better picture. Also notice there is no mention of US atach rate, where its is probably only 3 per console (Halo 3 and COD MW, MW2).

    #123 5 years ago
  124. DaMan

I don’t think there is any fanboism in my comment, just a logical reasoning of the PR spin.
“When you look for only the positives you tend to ignore what is really happening” the same can be said of Sony’s comments re:PSPGo

    #125 5 years ago
  126. Psychotext

Also notice there is no mention of US atach rate, where its is probably only 3 per console (Halo 3 and COD MW, MW2).

Last time we got the attach rates from NPD for the US it was:

    360: 8.2
    PS3: 6.5
    Wii: 6.2

    #126 5 years ago
  127. Kysshin

@123 : I don’t pretend speaking in the name of every European but I know that the majority still buys its games full price, often out of ignorance.

I don’t think I was commenting on your post, Mad-elph. sorry if there were some reasonable posts here, don’t feel like going through 2 pages.

“I don’t think there is any fanboism in my comment”

  130. Mad-elph

well I was corrected by Psycho. I was speaking on the basis of my friends. However now that I think of it they do like GTA and L4D.

I wonder how much this is all affected by the PS3 sells cause its a Blu-ray player… so if we tossed that lot out what would the attach rate be for PS3? Just curious, certainly Sony could monitor games played on a system to see how many really game… much like their comments about X million PSN accounts, well I have 5 on my PS3 but only one every gets used. They report what seems impressive, but all with PR spin.
    Sorry Gadzooks!

    No worries mate.

It just rankles me when people make the generalisation that Xbox is only about shooters. I have around 70 Xbox games including download titles, covering almost every genre I can think of (with the notable exception of platformers) and only 6 of those are shooters (mix of FPS and TPS).

It’s true that online shooters are more popular on Xbox, probably due to the more suitable controller and XBL party/voice comms functionality, but Sony has about as many shooters in it’s library and has marketed them very hard.

Anyone who says one platform has a more diverse catalog than the other is clearly not looking in the right places.
