Ask Remedy stuff about Alan Wake, win a Limited Edition 360, game Collector’s Editions!

Monday, 10 May 2010 17:32 GMT By Patrick Garratt

wake360

Microsoft just greenlit an Alan Wake community interview for us. Ask developer Remedy questions and you could win hardware and pretty discs.

It’s dead easy. Ask a question for Remedy in the comments. We’re going to pick ten of them tomorrow and pass them over to Microsoft. Remedy sends back answers. Job done.

Whichever questions draw the best answers win. First place gets a “Limited Edition” 360 – we’re assuming this is a Wake machine, similar to the Modern Warfare 2 box we gave away recently – while second and third places get Collector’s Editions of the game.

Off you go. We’ve been asked to avoid questions about the game’s ending and spoilers in general, so be good.

We’ve been promised the answers back in time for the game’s launch on Friday.

Alan Wake was about 5 years in development. The Reviews mention that it only runs in 545p, there is a lot of tearing and bad textures. In addition to that, the German dub is horrible.

I would appreciate it if you can answer why these negative aspects exist because I can’t figure out why.

    Thank you

Do you find the mixed critical reception to your game a good or bad thing? For example, does a 7 from Eurogamer inspire you to do things differently or innovate more in a possible sequal? Whereas a 9 from IGN US could possibly cause you to be content and not push yourselves so hard next time?

During development the game shifted from an open world type game, to a more linear one using TV style presentation. Was this decision purely to stop players losing sight of the narative and allow you to create cliffhangers every 2/3 hours? Or was there more behind the decision?

As I get older, I’m finding it harder and harder to finish games, usually down to difficulty issues. With narrative based games, it’s especially frustrating not to be able to progress and complete the story. No other form of storytelling denies you access to the complete story once you start reading or watching.

However, I can understand younger gamers who may be more competent complaining if a game is too easy.

How do you balance the need to tell and complete a story with the need to provide some form of challenge to all players? Do you think I will be able to experience the full story of Alan Wake?

From the first pictures I saw years ago until now I thought “it’s impossible!”. Alan wears a tweetjacket over a hoodie. What is the biggest compromise you had to make when developing the game?

    - Are you discouraged by the fact that thousands of users are downloading the title without purchasing on 14th May?
    - Do you think that a title of such magnitude can compete with giants like Halo: Reach and Mass Effect 2 for Best Xbox 360 Game of 2010?
    - If you would have chosen the PlayStation 3 over Xbox 360 as development console, you think that right now you would have completed the works?
    - One of your members spoke about a possible result. Do not you think maybe it could be below expectations because of the excellent ratings that received the first?
    - If Sony would give you a good sum to make a Killer Application exclusive on PlayStation 3, you could accept?

Lots of games seem to take influence from the films of Ridley Scott (especially Blade Runner, Alien and Black Hawk Down) but Alan Wake is one of the very few that looks towards David Lynch. Ok, hands down, that is actually the best question on here!

    I’ll give another one a shot…

So, Alan is an author, (much like Harry Mason was) is this down to inspiration or is it something you wanted to impart on the audience? I mean do you want to sensationalise the authors of books you enjoy onto an audience that has seemingly lost touch with the written word? Was this also behind the decision to pre-empt events in the game with scraps of paper found to read knowing that the majority of people wont stop to read them?

In the last years we have seen a significant increase in focus on the narrative part of games, especially since people like BioWare keeps pushing the boundaries in RPGs. Has this inspirered you, and especially writer Sam Lake, to show that it is indeed possible to create an intriguing and compelling story in action games too, despite the often contrary belief? And how do you feel about putting more weight on narrative effects and means during the development?

One of the main concerns in Alan Wake seemed to be the establishment of the game as an example of an artistic quality of storytelling to the medium. Do you guys believe it is necessary for a character to have its own developed personality in order to achieve that level of quality?

Will you, people at Remedy, give me the opportunity to experience the incredible thrilling suspense of Alan Wake?

Since Alan Wake was first announced 5 years ago, I’ve been desperately waiting to get and know what Wake’ s story is, but since the exclusivity deal went official there is no way for me to experience the game.

    #83 5 years ago
  84. manamana

Since I haven’t played Alan Wake yet, I can’t tell first hand, but in the reviews its stated, that Alice hasn’t much background details nor many appearences. On the other hand its all about finding and saving her, isnt it? How come? Did you save the characters backround details for DLC or next episodes?

    #84 5 years ago
  85. onlineatron

Originally, when announced, Alan Wake was promised to be an open world experience and emphasis was placed on such things as dynamic weather systems (I remember the original showing of a cyclone).

Reviews so far have indicated that some of these mechanics and structures were scaled back. Most have agreed that the game is quite a linear, controlled experience (by no means a bad thing, I love games that tell a story and the best tend to be those that lean more towards the a linear structure).

    Enough hot air…
MY QUESTION IS; What caused these alterations during development? Had you taken on too much (in the time frame you had) or did you feel as though the experience you wanted players to have collided with these early promises?
    If the latter, how so?

    #85 5 years ago
  86. Aimless

Remedy has made a name for itself as a creator of story-driven action games, and by all accounts Alan Wake continues this trend. Given this lineage, where does the company see the genre in 10 years time? Your most recent game’s open world aspirations were reeled back in over the course of development, but is that an avenue you can see being explored more successfully in the future or do you view the challenges involved as being insurmountable given the realities of game development?

Edit: Curse you, onlineatron, for your vaguely similar question posted a few seconds before mine! I better think up another one now just in case…

  95. Aimless

    @onlineatron

Luckily I have nothing better to do than think up more:

Alan Wake is your second titular character, and quite the opposite of a mute blank slate like Gordon Freeman. With this in mind, as a developer do you spend a lot of time thinking of ways to make the player roleplay that character — i.e. not bunnyhop around knocking over objects whilst NPCs are speaking — or do you feel it’s better to reward disruptive behaviour through surprise acknowledgement — such as the cops in Max Payne 2 complaining when you switch off the TV they’re watching — and let the more self-serious gamers take care of themselves?

-How was it decided that you would show the game at E3 2009? Was it your decision, or from Microsoft?

-Was there ever a point at which you feared Microsoft would pull funding or the Alan Wake project would go unpublished?

-How will the planned DLC episodes integrate with Alan Wake 2? Will there be a full DLC “season” before the sequel?

-What is the pricing plan for DLC episodes?

-How do you feel about the criticism that your gameplay mechanics tend to be third person shooters plus an augmentation mechanic (light in Alan Wake; bullet time in Max Payne)?

1-Alan Wake Is A Psychological Thriller So For example There Must Be A Lot Of Horror ، Strong language ، And Adult Scenes So Why the Rating of the Game is “teen”?

2-In One of Interviews with Matias Myllyrinne He Said:”Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen. We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience “Alan Wake” was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive.” It Mean’s Alan Wake Is Only suitable For Xbox360 and large TV’s But I Say How Much Alan Wake Is Suitable For Xbox360 It’s is suitable For PC Too! Because your Last Games(Maxpayne 1&2)Have A Great Success On PC , In the Other Side Remedy Said :”We Are Only 50 Persons To Create This Game So We’re Little For Making The PC version” Now The Game On X360 Is Completely Finished Do You Have Any opinion On Developing It On PC?

3- What’s The Diffrence between Story telling In Nightmare Difficulty and Other Difficulties? It Means that Maybe In Easy Difficulties We Don’t Understand The Main Storyline?

4- As Today Mr.Oskari Hakkinen Said:”Alan wake 2 Already mapped Out” So As the story Is Written And the Engine of Game is Ready How many Times Do You guess We will Waiting For Alan Wake 2?

5- Do You Have Any Idea To Use Natal On original Alan wake?

  143. bytemap

First off, thanks to VG247, Remedy and Microsoft for this opportunity.

My main question would be surrounding this idea:

Awhile back there was a poll when you first started developing Alan Wake. In that poll, you asked many fans as to how Alan would interact with his characters coming to life. A majority of fans opted for a gun.

As the idea of this game developed further as a psychological thriller and you encompassed ideas of using light as a weapon. What made you still use a gun as an option? To me this seemed to lessen the grandness of Alan Wake a slight degree, or for lack of a better term, insert a common game scenario where this wasn’t a common game. As in many games, there is mainly only one direction to do away with the bad guys and that’s 99% of the time done with a gun.

Albeit, I will still definitely give this game a play through, but the thought of using another method of interaction besides a gun seemed more logical. Since he is an author, he could’ve written pages of clauses to the enemies demise. A pen, ink, pencil, paper, book or even the environment with a stick all could’ve been used to handle that darkness.

Also, would’ve it been to hard to implement another method as this since it took some time to refine such an interesting title?

Thanks again and best of luck to everyone.

One of the more prominent themes in Twin Peaks is that the aw-shucks good-naturedness associated with small-towns is just a front for dark dealings behind closed doors. Many Stephen King novels also explore this same theme. As both Twin Peaks and King were obvious influences on “Alan Wake,” what can Bright Falls tell us about isolated communities and the people who thrive there? Is there any larger social commentary beneath the psychological action thriller aspects of the game?

Everyone’s been asking what their movie/book influences were, but I’d be more interested in hearing if they were influenced by any existing survival horror games – specifically whether they were fans of Silent Hill, given that the Alan Wake and Silent Hill have been mentioned in the same breath by the press many times during the game’s development.

Given that traditional horror games appear to be floundering or becoming more like standard third-person shooters, did they have specific ideas on how to reinvent the genre for the 21st century right from the start? Were there things that they definitely wanted to do or to avoid in order to stand out from the crowd or broaden the game’s appeal beyond the usual horror game fanbase?

Where do horror games go from here? What are they still doing badly?

Something that I’ve been thinking about while I’ve been watching this game is that very often when you’re playing a game that’s got a psychological component, it concentrates on that. Say it has shooting mechanics; they’re not as polished as a shooter, and so the game gets evaluated against shooters and is found lacking.

I felt that to make a GOOD third person shooter with a psychological compontent is very hard to do or almost impossible. Game design formula is not properly cracked yet. Whats your opinion on that? Was that intentional from the start to make a Psychological thriller with Action?

I have a few more questions. If you could make any game of any genre next what would you like to make and if its not a pure horror game would it have horror elements if possible?

The game has been along time in the making, what held up development for so long and how do you feel now the game has finally gone gold and about to be released?

Do you have any aspirations in making an online component (in some form) to this game or any future games you make?

Like Max Payne, Alan Wake is obviously a pun. What were the other first names beginning with ‘A’ you came up with at that first brainstorming session?

    8 – Gheritt White

If you had your time making the game again (but know what you know now), what would you do differently?

    36 – andry456

If Sony would give you a good sum to make a Killer Application exclusive on PlayStation 3, you could accept?

    39 – OlderGamer

With each year that passes, not only does the average age of the gaming public increases but alos far more women game too. How does that impact the game, its content, presentation, and over all development proscess?

    52 – Roarster

Lots of games seem to take influence from the films of Ridley Scott (especially Blade Runner, Alien and Black Hawk Down) but Alan Wake is one of the very few that looks towards David Lynch. What attracts you to Lynch and why do you think most developers seem to shy away from his films and the atmosphere they create?

    101 – Riren

Was there ever consideration of contracting a Horror author like Stephen King or Dean Koontz to write Alan’s “narrative” passages?

    143 – bytemap

A while back there was a poll when you first started developing Alan Wake. In that poll, you asked many fans as to how Alan would interact with his characters coming to life. A majority of fans opted for a gun.

As the idea of this game developed further as a psychological thriller, you encompassed ideas of using light as a weapon. What made you still use a gun as an option?

    144 – JoeX111

One of the more prominent themes in Twin Peaks is that the aw-shucks good-naturedness associated with small-towns is just a front for dark dealings behind closed doors. Many Stephen King novels also explore this same theme. As both Twin Peaks and King were obvious influences on “Alan Wake,” what can Bright Falls tell us about isolated communities and the people who thrive there? Is there any larger social commentary beneath the psychological action thriller aspects of the game?

    153 – Nprime

we know Alan is a writer and his lastest writting is about a police in New York who his wife and child have been killed and this story has become popular.Hasn’t this story a relationship with Max payne ? Because First, Max was a police in new york and second, Max payne game is very popular game.

    155 – Blerk

Given that traditional horror games appear to be floundering or becoming more like standard third-person shooters, did they have specific ideas on how to reinvent the genre for the 21st century right from the start? Were there things that they definitely wanted to do or to avoid in order to stand out from the crowd or broaden the game’s appeal beyond the usual horror game fanbase?

I really like Blerks Q(155), looking forward to that answer. Sometimes it seems as if game devs are reluctant to move game mechanics forward. I’ll guess the answers they’re going to give:

    6 – CroMagnon

Like Max Payne, Alan Wake is obviously a pun. What were the other first names beginning with ‘A’ you came up with at that first brainstorming session?

Anus. That was our favourite. Microsoft weren’t so keen, the miserable sods.

    8 – Gheritt White

If you had your time making the game again (but know what you know now), what would you do differently?

We’d just do a bunk with Microsoft’s money and never come back. Man, that shit was hard work!

    36 – andry456

If Sony would give you a good sum to make a Killer Application exclusive on PlayStation 3, you could accept?

Only if they promised not to reveal where we’d run off to with Microsoft’s money. Then we’d run off with theirs too.

    39 – OlderGamer

With each year that passes, not only does the average age of the gaming public increases but alos far more women game too. How does that impact the game, its content, presentation, and over all development proscess?

Women belong in the kitchen, man! We could’ve included an ironing mini-game, I suppose.

Lynch is a lot cheaper than those other guys. They want fucking loads!

    101 – Riren

Was there ever consideration of contracting a Horror author like Stephen King or Dean Koontz to write Alan’s “narrative” passages?

We’re more sort of Mills and Boon guys ourselves. We actually copied all the passages from some site on the internet.

We got a neat sponsorship deal with Smith and Wesson to go along with the Energizer thing.

Small towns, man. Rednecks and inbreeds – guaranteed! If they don’t eat you, they’ll fuck you. And then eat you.

    153 – Nprime

we know Alan is a writer and his lastest writting is about a police in New York who his wife and child have been killed and this story has become popular.Hasn’t this story a relationship with Max payne ? Because First, Max was a police in new york and second, Max payne game is very popular game.

No, this is a completely different cop and family than the one in the now-shit franchise that we no longer own. His name’s Min Remorse. Or something.

    155 – Blerk

Don’t know if the contest is still live, but please do try n get these answered. Thanks a lot. :)

1.) It’s been a long time in the making. Did the game undergo any major changes during the time it was on the cooker?

2.) A lot of other developers have tried their hand at episodic content. Sin episodes never made it to Episode 2. We have yet to hear anything about Half Life 2 Episode 3. And Alone in the Dark, did not do so well critically or sales wise. Did it never worry you going the Episodic presentation way?

3.) Remedy have a history with Poets of the Fall, both of you originating from Finland. How good is the relationship between Remedy and POTF?

4.) Your naming convention always puzzles us. Max Payne….Alan Wake. Any particular secret behind this?

5.) Alan Wake is garnering praises from all over the industry. Congratulations on this achievement. How do you plan to push the franchise further, now that the foundations have been laid?

6.) Was there any particular segment that you badly wanted to be in the game, but could not accommodate due to some reason?

7.) How do you think LOST will end? :P

    /awaits scientific formulae and diagrams

    #233 5 years ago
  234. Grathius

I’ll ask a few questions hopefully one gets answered:

    1. Seeing as Alan Wake takes references from one of the greatest TV shows to grace our screen LOST. Will Alan Wake follow the same structure of introducing secrets both hidden and blatant only to have them answered near the final moments of the franchise or never brought up ever again? LOST has a bad habit of asking question but waiting to long to answer them thus losing viewers.

    2. Do you feel that 10 years down the track Alan Wake will have the same cultural impact in the video game industry such as Max Payne 1/2? And be looked at in the future as one of the games that just worked in all areas? Action, Immersion, visual distinction and the tingly fuzzy feeling you get every-time you do a play-through of the single player?

    3. With Alan Wake following the episodic format in the likes of TV shows as LOST, Heroes, 24 & Prison Break. Will that style of format in terms of ” Previously on Alan Wake” and re-caps play a heavy role in the future of Alan Wake titles?

    4. How will you (Remedy) in the future with the Alan Wake franchise continue to push the super-natural thriller genre? Will narrative, gameplay, soundtrack play pivotal roles in ensuring that the future of Alan Wake continues to baffle and intrigue gamers around the world?

That’s all I can think of hopefully this comp is still open and they get answered!! :D
