Update: Ubi UK PR manager Stefano Petrullo’s very excited about this news story. So much so, he sent us a picture of himself which one of the ACII devs. That’s him on the right.

Original: Assassin’s Creed II has received a Guinness World Record for being the “most cover-featured video game”, Ubisoft announced today.

The game’s been featured in 127 front cover features in 32 countries, with 17  covers in the UK alone, between its formal reveal last April and April of this year.

“The worldwide interest for the brand, coupled with the energy and creativity of our press team made for a winning combination and I am proud of receiving this Guinness World Record,” said Ubisoft’s MD of the EMEA region, Alain Corre.

“The evidence submitted by Ubisoft was extremely thorough, with full details of every publication that featured the game. It’s been a pleasure researching this category and we were pleasantly surprised that Assassin’s Creed II took the record,” added Gaz Deaves, Editor of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.

Ubisoft’s currently planning a new title in the series which will feature multiplayer, and is a continuation of Assassin’s Creed II. It’s due within this fiscal year.

ASSASSIN’S CREED ® 2 AWARDED

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ®

Assassin’s Creed II has featured on more magazine front covers than any other video game

London, England – April 15th, 2010 – Today Ubisoft® received confirmation from Guinness World Record ®, the global authority on record breaking, that Assassin’s Creed II now holds the Gamer’s Edition Guinness World Record for being the most cover-featured video game. Assassin’s Creed II was used as a lead cover story on 127 different publications in 32 countries, between April 2009 and April 2010.

“Assassin’s Creed is one of our most well-loved brands,” said Alain Corre managing director EMEA at Ubisoft. “The worldwide interest for the brand, coupled with the energy and creativity of our press team made for a winning combination and I am proud of receiving this Guinness World Record.”

“Gaz Deaves, Editor of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition, said: “The evidence submitted by Ubisoft was extremely thorough, with full details of every publication that featured the game. It’s been a pleasure researching this category and we were pleasantly surprised that Assassin’s Creed II took the record – I’m sure plenty of commentators (including myself) would have predicted another well-known game winning the title instead, and this achievement is even more impressive in view of the other 2009 releases that Assassin’s Creed II was able to beat”.

In the United Kingdom, the massive press campaign for Assassin’s Creed 2 achieved 17 front covers, over 340 pages of specialist press coverage and 14 review awards from April 2009 to April 2010.

The record will be shortlisted for entry in the next edition of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition. For more information please visit www.guinnessworldrecords.com/gamers

@1 Totally agree. It’s hardly anything to be really proud of. Clutching at straws…?

They gave Arkum Asylum a made up award last year, just part of the marketing now; “High meta critic score, live action trailer, guiness award, comic books”.

Given GTA IV hit lifestyle covers as well, I dispute this record.

Is there a world record for the greatest amount of face palms induced by yet another pointless Guinness world record?

Looks like he’s so excited he has to face punch himself to wake up.

I’m being a prick, though. Congrats. But I’m still awaiting for more arbitrary records, like “worst DRM ever”, “worst post-launch server infrastructure”, and “worst public relations excuses to cover up DRM failings”, among others.

Great Stefano! I suppose that should be easily yours the record for the longest “free-drink” receipt in the history of videogames parties too.
