Analyst: GTA V announcement coming before E3

Friday, 5th March 2010 08:22 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Rockstar’s going to grind the internet to a halt before E3 again with a Grand Theft Auto V announcement, according to one analyst.

Mike Hickey of Janco Partners said in a note that the game will be announced before the LA mega event, but not during it as predicted by some.

“There is building suspension for a pre-E3 GTA V announcement, although we expect nothing from Rockstar at this year’s official E3 event,” said Hickey.

“We think the next iteration of GTA for console can significantly outsell its predecessor, reflecting on the sales acceleration of the prior cycle GTA console iterations, an accelerating core gamer installed base, and the most talented / motivated development team in the world, in our view,” he further added.

Take Two hasn’t been very forthcoming with when GTA V will get announced, considering the quote of the year given by T2 president Strauss Zenick last September.

“We’re not going to announce it. We’re not going to announce when we’re going to announce it. And we’re not going to announce the strategy about announcing it or about when we’re going to announce it either, or about the announcement strategy surrounding the announcement of the strategy.”

Rockstar co-president Dan Houser also went on record on the subject, admitting they’d need to think of the main characters and main setting for the game first before doing anything.

Thanks, IG.

I’m still hoping for a return to the ’80s with Tommy Vercetti and Vice City…

Apparently some recent evidence seems to be pointing towards a new GTA game being set in San Andreas.

dennis hopper must return as the porno director !

I hope its not San Andreas, I really enjoyed it but for the music, character development, voice acting and missions I prefer Vice City. I still have nightmares about James Woods telling me

Am I the only one who saw the ad in the “Episodes from Liberty City” Boxed version that says, “Goodbye Liberty City. Next Stop.” followed by “Coming in March” with the Rip in the page in the shape of France? But it’s the placement of “Next Stop.” that is the key thing as it sits right where London would be. And that’s not the only “London” clue on it. There is also an ad for “Theatre Seagull” – there’s a real “Seagull Theatre” in London. And on the other side there’s an illustration of a mustached figure with an “English” looking top hat with the line “What What” beside it?

Perfect Hype to sell the PS3 DLC on March 30th, DLC that didn’t sell that well, that’s a year old, and most likely already seen or been played by most PS3 GTA fans.

Those same images were on the electronic billboards in vanilla GTA4, though. So we’d already passed at least one ‘March’ between GTA4 launching and the episodes disc arriving.

Even if they were there, how are they (Rockstar) going to sell the Episodes?

    – The DLC didn’t sell as well as expected on the 360
    – It’s a year old (Lost and Damned, at least)
    – Most PS3-only gamers have seen, if not also played the episodes already

So, what could possibly make the Episodes sell better than a new GTA announcement? It will get enough Hype going and I’m sure Rockstar will push it like, “Get the complete story before GTA5 – Episodes from Liberty City! BUY NOW!”

I’m gonna say that the announcement will come up to a week before the Episodes come out.

If March passes without any mention then I’ll STFU.

If we’re going by the past, they won’t announce GTAV for awhile. We’ll probably get a follow up like VC or SA using the GTA4 engine (which is fine by me).

Well, I hope you’re right. But I can’t see them even announcing it before Red Dead hits the shelves for fear of overshadowing that project.

running over chavs on the street corners of south london would be amazing!

a modern day or 1990′s brit pop era london would be so good, and so different to anything thats coming out. i don’t know if the rest of the world would ‘get it’ though

I think the whole point of GTAIV, was that it tried to streamline the series, with mechanics based on modern technology, that streamlines OUR lives as humans.

Rockstar North has always been great at contextualising mechanics, and GTAIV wasn’t brilliant at that, but it tried. The minigames are important in GTA, purely for that storytelling element.

So personally, I don’t expect a step backwards, into the past.

I expect a new city, but with satirical (yet functional) takes on iPhone’s, and it’s endless Apps – and apply them to missions.

Yeah I don’t think it’ll take place in a non-current day setting either, as cool as that would be.

If it does take place in London, I think that a cool idea similar to the pigeon killing side mission would be shooting out surveillance cameras that are all over London today. It would be very “Rockstar” indeed.

The story in GTA4 was pretty real to be honest. I liked it, it portrayed life in New York City pretty well. Now most of you probably don’t agree because you don’t know what life is like over here, but I appreciated every sec of GTA4 even if I was frustrated trying to beat the game under 30 hours for that trophy.

I also wish people would stop saying GTA5, cause it won’t be called that. More than likely we’ll be heading back to Miami baby! Hopefully this time during the present. I love the 80′s but I want to see a mission where you car jack the BangBus and the people in the back hop out the van naked scared shitless :D …. I know I need help :P I’m seeing a therapist on Monday :(
