Pachter believes Epic “regrets” exclusivity deal with Microsoft

gearsofwar

Michael Pachter has voiced the belief that Epic Games “regrets” signing an exclusivity deal with Microsoft on the Gears of War franchise.

Speaking with Geoff Keighley during the latest Bonus Round edition on Game Trailers TV(via GamesThrist), Pachter feels the developers “can’t wait” to go multiplatform.

“I think the Epic guys can’t wait until they can start doing multiplatform games,” Pachter said, citing that it no longer makes sense for publishers to release on a single platform.

“I think that Microsoft has a contract to make sure that they get that sequel, but I think Epic regrets signing that contract,’ he added. “You’re up to 11 million PS3 in the US and probably a similar number in Europe, and you’ve got a 20 million addressable market with a game like Gears of War.

“I mean, that thing would easily sell 3 or 4 million on the PS3 and that’s a lot of profit.”

Epic has remained mum about what to expect from the company, let alone when we’ll get a new Gears game.

However, Cliff Bleszinski stated earlier in the month that there’s “a bunch of awesome shit” that its working on and to expect reveals when the weather warms up.

They’d have regretted Gears selling like UT3 without Microsoft’s marketing muscle too. :D

The rumours are that MS had a timed exclusive deal for Gears 1 & 2 but not the third.

Is that a rumour? I thought everybody knew that by now.

Don’t tempt me :(

No seriously MS own the Gears IP don’t they not epic? Therefore it will NEVER come to Ps3.

Wow so Naughty dog and the Killzone makers must be head butting themselves that they didn’t get to release there games on 360. :(

Ridiculous statement. Why do people give Pachter this oxygen?

Gears of War is a mega seller because it was a big Xbox exclusive that received Microsoft’s monster marketing budget.

Epic and Microsoft together made Gears a mega-franchise.

Like shit do Epic regret this. If Gears ever goes multi-format, they’ll be thanking Microsoft for being a part of making it the hit it was.

@Gheritt
Far as i know no one from Epic or MS confirmed it was true.

Nope Lambda, MS dont own the IP. Unlike what Reask said, because both Naughty dog and GG are owned by Sony along with all their games.

As for the marketing, its true. But the franchise has been marketed now, its known to the point where it’ll just sell on any platform. Wouldnt be the first time a games surfed the MS marketing train then got off at PS3 station, remember Bioshock?

It probably wont happen. No doubt MS have the third one under contract already to, if it wasnt round the time that rumour started i’m sure they’ve since flexed their money muscle and got it. Or maybe Epic just wouldnt see the point because the first and second are only on 360 and they see no market on PS3 for it or atleast not a big enought one.

This is all BS. Epic has made a shit load of money from the gears franchise, all to the tune of some big, fat, juicy pay checks from MS.

Guess how Cliffy B got the cash to splurge on that Lamborghini?

Plus, I guess people have forgotten that Kudo Tsunoda is General Manager of the Gears of War franchise for MS. Geez, I wonder how important Gears is to MS…

Guys, the question is not if this will happen at all. The question is if you guys want GEoW to go multiplat. Because from what I’m reading you don’t want it on the PS3 at all.

I believe the question was if Epic regrets the exclusivity deal or not.

As a PS3 owner I’m not particulary bothered as the game has never looked overly impressive although to be fair I’ve never actually played it, just seen the vids, but I have read quite a few complaints about the game regarding lag and glitches (this true?).

Regarding it coming to PS3, maybe one day in the future. After all, I thought Final Fantasy would remain firm property of Playstation but look where that went.

Pachter is a retard, plain and simple. Epic shopped Gears of War to a number of publishers including Sony and no one wanted to invest 10 million dollars in a modern, violent, postapocolytic shooter. Even Microsoft fought to keep the now infamous chainsaw melee out of the game. Funny how the genre has become this generation’s most popular but moving from the PS2′s casual community to current gen, no one wanted to touch a game like Gears of War.

@22
I had never heard the stories about Epic shopping the Gears IP around, but that does not at all surprise me. When I think of games that tried to utilize cover systems, I think of Killswitch, which was a massive failure. So only with Microsoft did they get it off the ground. Now consider what showing off the game in its earliest form did. When the first pics and vids of Gears came out, it blew everyone away. I don’t know the statistics here, but a huge amount of games utilize the Unreal Engine today because it is a tool that allows developers more easily make their games, and they all wanted their games to look as good as Gears. The game helped them sell the engine! I’m sure Epic does want to develop PS3 games, but I don’t see them regretting their move with Gears.

Wow some people are getting defensive over this huh. At ease soldiers. He’s just making a remark that exclusivity to a single platform does not make a lot of sense any more. It made perfect sense for Gears 1 of course because MS put their marketing muscle behind it and the PS3 was floundering, but now there’s 30m of them in the world it’s a slightly different equation. That’s all it’s about though. Doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Goliath,

You said –> “Epic shopped Gears of War to a number of publishers including Sony and no one wanted to invest 10 million dollars in a modern, violent, postapocolytic shooter.”

This is not true.

“Even Microsoft fought to keep the now infamous chainsaw melee out of the game.”

This is not true.

“Funny how the genre has become this generation’s most popular but moving from the PS2’s casual community to current gen, no one wanted to touch a game like Gears of War.”

This is also not true.

That was rather amusing :) I have put more hours into Gears than any other game in my life. Gears 2, played and beat but could not get into the multiplayer, They removed map selection feature and the ability to host a public game for friends while public players can come and go at will…. the lobby system in 2 was just not pleasant.

Sorry to burst your bubble Mark but you must not be in the loop. Microsoft did try to nix the chainsaw in Gears of War, Epic did show the game to other publishers including representatives from Sony and shooters are this console generation most popular genre. Catch up.

As I understand it, if Epic have no regrets, then we can assume that the money given by Microsoft for the exclusivity, and their marketing expanses are more substantial than the profits that Gears of War could make on PS3 and PC.

(Epic Games said that the absence of a PC port of Gears of War 2 was their decision, but as the current policy of Microsoft Game Studios is to keep all of their games out of Microsoft Windows, it’s very likely that the decision was made by Microsoft)

btw : who is Goliath to be so sure about his informations ? Is he Phil Harrison ? Kaz Hirai ? ^^
