Sony: LBP is landmark title, user created content to “balloon”
Speaking with Videogamer.com, Jamie MacDonald, vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios has said that he expects that user-generated content for Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet to “balloon” and that the platformer itself is a landmark in gaming history.
“I expect the user-created levels or themes to absolutely balloon once the title is out, and I think we’ve just empowered people,” said MacDonald.
“In some ways it’s quite hard to guess how it will affect the industry in the long run because sometimes I think it’s going to be empowering, it’s going to be massive, it’s going to encourage people to be creative, and where that leads I’m not really sure, but I think it’s going to be really exciting. And I think we’ll see lots of people developing titles in a similar vein.
“I think LittleBigPlanet is a landmark, frankly. I think it’s one of those titles that shows a whole new way of playing and sharing.”
LittleBigPlanet has hit US retail and will be available in Europe next week.

I really hope LBP sells. It’d be criminal if most people overlooked it in favour of Vanilla Shooter 38 or Licensed Product 487.

I think it’ll do well, but I also think it’s going to be a slow burner. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was greeted with a 3rd or even 4th place on release, simply because the hardcore who do run out and buy games on release day are currently being drowned in top quality action/adventure titles.
I think it’ll continue to snowball behind the scenes though, with sales proving steady throughout the year, until it reaches a level where the user generated content is of such quality, that it’s seen as a must have.
