State of Decay 2 Blood Plague Guide

While you're roaming the world of State of Decay 2, you'll sometimes see a zombie with glowing red eyes, standing out from the usual ones with yellow eyes. These are zombies that have been completely consumed by the Blood Plague, and it's your job to take them down as quickly and effectively as possible.

While your normal zombies with glowing yellow eyes inflict health damage on a character whenever they attack them, the glowing red Plague zombies can infect your characters. Every time a Plague zombie lands a hit on you, an infection meter will build up above your mini map, signifying how close that character is to being infected.

If the character does become infected due to sustaining multiple attacks from Plague zombies, a yellow bar will appear, along with a timer. This yellow bar and timer indicate how much time this character has until the Blood Plague runs its course, and they become one of the glowing red zombies. It’s therefore essential that you cure them as soon as possible by getting an antidote to them, which we’ll run through below.

How to Cure the Blood Plague

As part of the State of Decay 2 tutorial on your base camp, you’ll be prompted to create an infirmary. It’s through the infirmary that you’ll be able to create a cure for the Blood Plague, which is one of the running themes of the entire plot of the game. Just below, we'll guide you through the steps in order to quickly cure a victim of the Blood Plague:

  • Place the infected survivor into the infirmary straight away.
  • This stops the infection from progressing, but you still need to create a cure.
  • You need five Plague Samples to create a cure, and for this you need to track down and kill Plague zombies.
  • Head to a lookout tower, and scale it, scanning around at the top to find an Infestation point or Plague Heart on the map.
  • Get to the Infestation point or Plague Heart location quickly, and wipe out every single zombie there.
  • Plague zombies will nearly always drop a Plague Sample, and you need to collect five of these.
  • Head back to base camp, and interact with the infirmary to create the Plague Cure Vial.
  • Now approach the infected survivor, and use the E/Y prompt to administer the cure.

You have the other options of ‘exile’, ‘euthanize’, and ‘administer cure’, options, and you need to select the last option in order to completely cure them. They’ll be immediately cured, and your work here is done.

But what about the other, slightly more deadly options you're presented with when going to heal the afflicted character? You have the option to either exile or euthanize the character infected by the Blood Plague, and you can do this as soon as or as late as you want.

We'd recommend only using either of these options as a last resort if you can't cure the Blood Plague in time. Keep in mind that while exiling the infected might be the morally correct option, euthanizing them is actually more beneficial in the long run, as it means you can recover their gear without them wandering off with it.

We might be all wrapped up with how to avoid contracting the Blood Plague in State of Decay 2 and how to cure it, but continue ahead to our State of Decay 2 Vehicles guide, where we'll walk you through how to repair and refuel your car. There’s also our State of Decay 2 multiplayer guide, where we’ll walk you through how to play online with others, as well as how to play strictly offline.
