Dbrand's black PS5 faceplates sell out in a few hours

You can't get one of the company's Darkplates before May at the moment.

Within a few hours of going live, skin company Dbrand's black PlayStation 5 faceplates have pretty much sold out.

The PS5 Darkplate went live this morning (Friday, February 12) and were out of stock within just a few hours. At the time of writing, you won't be able to get one of these faceplates shipped before May. Buying the Darkplate will set you back $59 – though at the moment it's just $49.

As the name suggests, this is a black faceplate that replaces the PlayStation 5's default white plastic.

Of course, Dbrand isn't the first company to try and do something like this. The firm is following in the footsteps of CMP Shells – previously PlateStation5.com and CustomizeMyPlates.com – which was selling black faceplates for Sony's new console. That outfit was almost put out of business following legal threats from Sony.

In January, CMP Shells made a return, boasting that it was "untouchable."

Dbrand is feeling similarly bold, with the product page for its PS5 Darkplates having the tag line: "Go ahead, sue us" while the marketing blurb on the page is similarly brash.

"When you look at this microscopic texture inside the Darkplates, what do you see?" Dbrand wrote.

"If your answer is 'a familiar-but-legally-distinct apocalyptic spin on the classic PlayStation button shapes,' you might be one of our lawyers."

The PS5 launched in November 2020 and had sold 4.5 million units by the end of 2020. Sony reckons it will sell another 3 million consoles before the close of the financial year in March.
