Nintendo and the studio behind Despicable Me are making an animated Mario movie

Nintendo has confirmed the long-running rumour that it's working on an animated Mario movie with Illumination.

Illumination is the studio responsible for animated hits like Despicable Me, and the Minions 3D series. The untitled Mario movie will also be feature-length.

Nintendo announced today that series creator and legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto will co-produce alongside Chris Meledandri, whose credits include many successful animated features. Meledandri is also the founder of Illumination.

Nintendo did not reveal a release window or a story synopsis for the film.

An animated Mario movie has been rumoured for a while, and reports as late as November last year indicated that Nintendo was close to a deal with Illumination, which we now know to have been accurate.

This is part of a trio of big news Nintendo announced earlier today. The company confirmed that the Switch's paid online service, Nintendo Switch Online, will launch this September. Nintendo also revealed that Mario Kart is heading to smartphones in the form of Mario Kart Tour.
