After quietly and temporarily escaping custody last week, CD Projekt’s REDkit, a modding suite for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, has finally made its official debut.

The fully-featured development kit is available freely via a dedicated minisite, and although not a complete copy of the tools used to create The Witcher 2, seems fairly powerful.

Although its officially in beta now, the toolkit has been available in closed tests so there are even a few mods already available for you to get an idea of what’s possible, including non-linear, branching adventures. REDkit features terrain tools such as SpeedTree; the ability to set a custom dynamic day and night cycle; and the ability to set dialogue camera manually if you prefer.

You don’t need programming skills, and you’ll have access to assets from The Witcher 2.

“We want to give players the power to tell the same kind of non-linear, branching stories that made The Witcher games so popular,” CD Projekt RED boss Adam Badowski said.

“Our fans have helped us for years to make our games the best they can be, and REDkit is part of embracing our community as a partner in game development.”
