Thought it barely seems like it, it’s actually been over two years since Team Meat’s Edmund McMillen released his solo rogue-like The Binding of Isaac. The indie cult favourite is perhaps too young to call a classic, but it sold strongly, received lavish critical praise and spawned a whole community of YouTube fans with its randomly-generated playthroughs and unforgiving difficulty. The documentary through the break comes from the team which made Indie Game: The Movie, and is a half hour look at the game’s development and intended message.

The Binding of Isaac has now passed the two million sales mark, according to the title’s creator Edmund McMillen. Divulged during an interview with Northernlion posted on YouTube, McMillen said the title’s success helped convince him to create The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which comes with a rather large huge expansion along with two-player co-op. It’s out on PC, Vita, and PS3 sometime this year, and 3DS and Xbox 360 versions are currently being discussed. Thanks, D’toid.

The Binding of Isaac has now moved 700,000 units since it was released digitally less than a year ago. Developer Edmund McMillen seems pleased, and had this to say on the matter: “Who would have thought a game about an abused child fighting off his mother with his tears could ever sell 700k copies in less than a year? Not me, that’s for fucking sure. 700k is a big number… maybe its time to bring this thing to console (wink).” The game’s Wrath of the Lamb DLC released last month helped push the title over the mark, contributing a fifth to the overall sales of the title. A free update is also available for the game which adds more bosses, enemies, a hard to attain final ending cut scene, and more. Thanks, Joystiq.

Do you like interesting things? Then you should be keeping track of The Binding of Isaac. It’s a roguelike shooter with a dash of Zelda, a hint of Robotron, and a soothing dollop of terrifying imagery. Fortunately, you won’t have to do much legwork to reach this one’s final destination. Team Meat madman Edmund McMillen has announced that the game’s coming to Steam on September 28 for $5 via the magical malleability of a sheet of paper. There’s also a limited edition Isaac plushie in the works. His insides may be fake, but his tears are all too real.
