Distance: new gameplay footage smells like WipEout, TrackMania

Halo 4 dev wanted sci-fi weapons, but testers didn’t like it
Halo franchise creative director Josh Holmes told GDC audiences that 343 Industries toyed with the idea of a stasis gun or grapple harpoon for Halo 4. As reported by Shack News, Holmes said he was very keen to explore and elaborate on Halo’s science fiction themes, but testing revealed players didin’t respond to kooky weapons and enemies, preferring the more familiar toolbox of shotgun (scattershot), assault rifle and sniper rifle. This helped flatten Halo 4′s learning curve and make it more accessible to the mass market is commands despite being an Xbox 360 exclusive.

GDC brought in 23,000 visitors
Organisers at UMB Tech Game Network have confirmed that GDC 2013 drew 23,000 attendees, the largest crowd in the show’s history, which stretches back 26 yuears and has spawned a number of regional and speciality spin-offs. GDC 2014 has been set for March 17-21, once more at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Check out all our GDC coverage through this link.

Hawken trailer shows off multiplayer environmental destruction
Here’s something a bit experimental from GDC – a PhysX tech demo of environmental destruction in Hawken’s multiplayer, powered by GPU Rigid Bodies. There’s some debate over whether this could actually work on current network architecture or if it is naught but a beautiful dream, but the idea of mechs destroying the ground underneath each other to create new paths is pretty sweet.
