Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes doesn’t have a platinum trophy, Kojima explains why

Monday, 17th March 2014 12:51 GMT By Dave Cook

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes director Hideo Kojima has explained why his prologue to The Phantom Pain doesn’t feature a platinum trophy on either PS3 or PS4.

As you may have heard, Ground Zeroes is quite short. Brenna discussed this in her hands-on preview last week, and other sources have backed it up. Kojima has repeatedly stressed that the game is a show-piece intended to convey the game’s new mechanics and features in a sandbox environment that grows and fills with extra content as you complete it over and over.

I’ve completed the game for writing up on the site, and you can watch me play live for yourself tomorrow afternoon. It should better-explain why the game can be finished so fast. Stay tuned for our Twitch broadcast times soon.

But why does the game feature no platinum trophy? Kojima took to Twitter in an attempt to explain the issue:

Boo Sony, or something. The full game features 13 bronze trophies, one silver trophy and one gold.

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes drops tomorrow in the States, then March 21 across Europe.

Errr, so why do PSN games have platinums? Even Angry Birds has one, and it’s a “non-full price” game.

straight up Bullshit, dead nation/resogun has it as well.
I can only imagine that you have to pay more to get a platin trophy integrated in your game and that kojima probably didnt want to pay that much.

Based on both additional reviewer comments and what Kojima said here, I may have been wrong about the game possibly having a lot more on the side and being appropriately priced. But, as I said, I need to play the game to be able to actually judge something of this nature, unlike story or art style or anything like that which doesn’t require such a step.

@Alkanida Both games you mentioned are only available digitally. Ground Zeroes is available by disc. Sony’s rules could be different for games that come on disc compared to games that are only available digitally. I’m surprised to hear any digital games have Platinum trophies.

If Sony is requiring companies to pay them in order to have a Platinum trophy, I’d see that more as a fault with Sony than a fault with Kojima or Konami. It would mean Sony’s trying to use the existence of trophies to exploit developers for easy money. More egregiously, since Sony eventually made trophies a requirement of all games released on PS3 (which very likely carries on into PS4), this would mean Sony is creating rules purposely designed to force developers to pay them for things they may not even want. It would be like a conference committee saying “Okay, you want to display at our conference, sure, but you’re required to also sell hot dogs and pay us for the right to provide condiments.”

Before Salarta gets on another his silly little soap boxes, do we even know that Sony require developers to pay them for a Platinum trophy? I have never read that anywhere, ever before and just sounds like pure speculation, without some sort of link that says otherwise.

I would very much doubt you have to pay for a platinum trophy in your game, seems far fetched. I’m guessing it doesn’t have one because it’s like gran turismo 5 prologue and barely worth a release at all.

Doesn’t Resogun have a platinum trophy? That game is free 99.

There is absolutely no way Sony requires payment for a platinum trophy.

It is not the first time Kojima talks nonsense like that, after all. Once more or less…

@Fin I think Alkanida was just throwing out unfounded speculation. I responded anyway, and my paragraph was more to highlight the absurdity of the idea than to treat it like it’s true.

    Trine has a platinum trophy.

    Strider has a platinum trophy.

Kojima has definitely been losing face saying such bullshit about lack of platinum trophy and overwriting what is clearly a demo.

Fix: They won’t allow us to have them in a demo

When Kojima is living under a fucking bridge he’ll look back on this moment, and recognise it as a key event.

This has to be a new highpoint in cynical cash ins on a fan base.

@ij 44 If it was a demo there wouldn’t be any trophies at all.

Trophies seem to be mandated by Sony based on whether the game is considered an “arcade” title (usually digital) or a full retail product,

Although it’s not always consistent, the reason for this game is pretty obvious – it’s releasing at a budget price and doesn’t have a lot of content.

Ground Zeroes is the ultimate cash in, a portion of a full game released as it’s own product. I don’t entirely mind this when it’s done right, but I don’t feel the cost matches the value in this case.

Someone else’s mileage might vary though.
