Star Citizen’s latest video is “rendered 100% in-engine, in real-time, at 4k resolution”

Tuesday, 22 October 2013 22:11 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Star Citizen had a video available which Roberts Space Industries states is “rendered 100% in-engine in real time at 4k resolution” showing off the Hornet and three variants of it: Ghost, Tracker, and Super Hornet. As if a regular hornet isn’t scary enough on its own. You can also look over the specifications through the firm’s blog. Star Citizen has now hit over $23 million in funding, and the next stretch goal is $25 million which will provide a larger alpha test net with extra servers and worldwide infrastructure. Thanks, PCgamesN.

    Will gtx 780′s in SLI run games in 4k?

  3. TheBlackHole

    mmm. where to start…

    for all the accuracy and detail they want to put in this game using their incredibly large windfall, you think they’d be able to avoid OXYGENATED EXPLOSIONS IN SPACE!

    That shit annoys the hell out of me. George Lucas did one good thing in the new star wars films – he didn’t make ships explode in a ball of flames, when in the oxygen free zone known as ANYWHERE IN OUTER SPACE.

    Also, how many of these epic, expensive, largely pointless videos do you think they’ll make prior to actually showing proper gameplay? And I mean proper gameplay – trading, missions, feature activity, not space combat.

    @2

    According to DF, three Titans struggled to hold a 30fps rate in 4k, without all settings on high (for a variety of games).

    @4

    Oh yeah… I remember that actually… That’s mental… Even 800 series won’t be enough without dual cards by the sound of it.

  6. TruthHurts

    It’s about time people realize that they will not be able to run this game anywhere close to those settings, if they can even run it at all. While the developer sure loves to spend the money of the backers’ to create glorified advertisements which make them more money, they sure as hell don’t know their way around optimization.

    This bubble will burst.

    #6 2 years ago
  7. Panthro

    @6 Only a small minority of people run games in 4K anyway.

    Its a massive amount of detail in the ship but outside its basically empty space, I’m pretty certain anything with more power than a GTX 650 will probably run it on max settings with a little bit of AA at 1080p and maintain a frame-rate over 30fps.

    And you cant just assume they don’t know how to optimize a game, where are you getting that from?

    #7 2 years ago
  8. DSB

    @3 If the teeth on your comb are that fine, it’ll be very hard to appreciate anything though. From Battlefield to CoD, there’s plenty of factual errors, including the way explosions behave.

    Although I get it. It would be cool to see something stylish.

    I’d be surprised if videos like this, essentially tech demos, weren’t part of their plan to attract funding for the game. They’re showing their capabilities and ambitions.

    I think it’s smarter to blow the pants off an investor than it is to drown them in a bunch of talk about gameplay. They don’t know what they’re looking at anyway, but they still want to be impressed.

  9. StarBandit

    @6

    Were you born dumb??or are you just regularly this stupid and trollish..

    The game is far from being done it’s in pre-pre-alpha stage and they have not done almost no optimization as of yet. You don’t optimize at alpha stage this early in the development.

    Get with the program quick…and what bubble will burst? i hope your fear mongering ego does first.

    it’s such a cop out samey prediction so redundant.

    @3

    Good thing’s comes to those that wait and don’t speculate…people will be able to play the dog fighting aspects of the game in December and before that a big hangar module update.Which will unlock the ability to invite other players, other thing game play and mechanics in action/real time will come later in other modules as they progress and backers test it.

    Also stop acting like you know how much they are spending and attributing that to mean a lot of being spent on these commercial adverts for in-game ships. Sense they are also apart of the games universe, so they are not a wast of anything and they are money well spent out a budget of 23 million and counting.

    Some of you people love to nit pick and bitch on a early in development project that is producing high quality work at this stage, like no other that I’ve seen.

    #9 2 years ago
  10. fearmonkey

    @3 – they aren’t going for realistic, they are going for action space opera type of stuff. If we wanted realistic, all the ships would handle like the human ships in Babylon 5. (which I would die to have a game for)

    The game looks incredible, I’m glad I have X-Rebirth coming to tide me over.

    I wish this game was as realistic as call of duty, I hope they add dogs.

  12. fkid

    #3: First, games that are 100% realistic are rare (name 3?) and usually relay poetic, philosophical messages (e.g. Dear Esther) or have a very steep learning curve (e.g. EVE) and note how much people complain about those games sometimes. That said, this game will still be as close to a real space-sim as they can get it while still being fun and enjoyable for the many backers of the game. Feedback will mould this game for sure.

    #6: Ignorant comment given that they are using CryEngine 3 and great optimizations are built-in to start with for the consoles and a variety of PC configurations. Extra polygons in a pre-alpha video in 4K will obviously be to showcase the highest end potential of their product.

    Personally, this video demonstrates that this will be the closest interactive experience to simulate being a pilot in a fictional sci-fi universe like Star Wars. I, for one, am excited as f*ck!

    This is one of the games I wish I could turn back time and back, I didnt know about it during its kickstarter… I know, I must have been living under a snorlax…

    Yes they said the minimum required graphics card to run the game is a GTX460 (It might have been a 470 not too sure)

    That may sound quite old now in terms of PC hardware but remember that’s MINIMUM!!!

    It was only the other week we discovered 50% of steam users who took the Steam hardware survey won’t be able to run the next COD or Watchdogs!! Due to those needing 6GB RAM minimum!! Which is just insane! I dread to think how much RAM or even the install size will be on this game!

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Panthro

    Wow, I never read the details I just expected them to be a little similar to crysis 2/3.

    A 460 is a little faster than a 650, thats a bit insane really… I guess we will just have to believe there predictions until they start the optimisation stage, maybe they will change the minimum specs, who knows… It got a lot of funds via kickstarter so there must be a big demand for it within the people who can run it, I know I wouldn’t be backing it if I couldn’t run it adequately.

    I’ll say it again — these guys are masters of marketing. You can see the doubt creep in around the edges with overly aggressive posts like #9′s. What they’ve done is used the same lust-inducing greed that car commercials use. Except in this case, that sexy car is actually in your budget.

    It’s an incredible feat of social engineering from where I sit. Anyone interested in anthropological studies is going to appreciate this, honestly, since they’ll understand what’s going on here. Usually psych students are well versed in this kind of thing, thus they don’t fall for it so easily. Instead of being enticed into lust, they examine what’s happening and ask more logical questions.

    For example: Where’s the evidence that any development beyond pre-rendered cutscenes is going on? Whereas Elite has had dev diaries and is heading towards an upcoming beta for people to actually play, all we’ve seen from Star Citizen are pre-rendered car commercials.

    Yeah, they say it’s all real time, but I haven’t seen much evidence of anything real time from them.

    I have my doubts, honestly. And they are valid.

    I’ve described this as “one of the greatest cons of the decade,” and if they decide to just drop development or release a very half-arsed tech demo, there’s nothing stopping them. They have no legal obligation to meet the desires and ridiculously high expectations they’re creating. This is the best get-rich-quick scheme anyone’s ever thought of.

    I wish I’d thought of it. It’s admirably well done — the way it targets a very specific niche that has more money than sense, giving them exactly what they want. CCP could probably pull the same con, if they wanted.

    But yes, I get the vibe that this is a con. I got that from “We need $1m for a fast travel system.

    If it isn’t a con, I’d be surprised.

    We’ll see, I guess.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. HomeworldFanShip

    @20 TheWulf:

    You’re clearly trolling or maybe your stupid or clueless or bored..maybe all four…there is so much information about Star Citizen and CIG out there that it’s overbearing.

    So lets state the ways here : two 24 hour live stream, pax, E3, amd live event, dragon-con, Citizen-Con, Wingmans hangar (42 episode’s) , WIP terra video, Space port WIP video, secret hangar code testing area …go’s on and on.

    Now lets keep going.

    The Frontier team has shown next to nothing (Six to Seven Dev videos and a pre- rendered in-game breakdown vid , with tiny project information newsletters) compared to the CIG team with in-depth videos and analysis an process breakdown, round tables, comm-links, Writers guides, ship concept art, character concept art, …etc..etc.

    All that in almost the same spawn of time no less and these are fairly different space-games (SC will be a handcrafted ‘MMO” and will have a single player game in SQ42 and the other is a solo/semi-online “MMOish” procedural generated open world space-game) going into fundamentally different paths of development and the development process one more traditional and the other modular an non-traditional production Schedule (CIG).

    One is a little more closed off and the other is not. One is fully crowd funded (SC) and the other is kick started. But his outside “suit” investors that will ultimate dictate their direction in the future , if deemed necessary.

    Next time

    Go do some research , and stop thinking your Dr.Phil (or whatever). Stop with bs “greatest con of all time” lol real funny real funny. How about next time you get off you high horse and come back into reality because your being negative just to be negative. An i hate that shit personal, no marketing or car adverts voodoo needed. I really dislike people like you, that troll and assume without fact checking first.

    An your last comment makes it clear that you have done ZERO research and are in fact trolling with your “Fast travel system for a million” statement because it’s not fast travel.

    Also don’t act like you were looking forward to this game with that kind of attitude. Because one; you have nothing good to say, two; it’s always con this and con that or that CIG is doing all this for shady reasons . When they have done nothing of the sort (unless you have evidence to the contrary) and am sure 200,000 people would notice if that was the case.

    So cheers, Plus i see you in this section for Star Citizen all the time (after almost each update). As well leaving asinine fear mongering comments, and posting mis-information. So either you were ban from the forums for good and here you are bitching or your ten years old with nothing better to do or maybe just maybe your a sad little man.

    Knowing the facts about something before shitting out the mouth and not assuming earns a person more respect amrite…

    Seriously. It’s just one of those things that gets my back up. I’m a big sci-fi fan – films, books, games. Things exploding like that in space is just insanely stupid when you have the faintest understanding of basic chemistry. I get that most people won’t care though.

  26. TheBlackHole

    Does anyone actually know how they are getting so much funding?

    - They don’t advertise.
    - They only made a relatively modest amount on Kickstarter (by comparison).
    - Their website doesn’t rank for any decent terms related to games, sci-fi, space, crowdfunding, MMOs etc.
    - Their Kickstarter page STILL outranks their website for the phrase ‘star citizen’.
    - Also, an AVERAGE funding figure of $85. Seriously? That seems outrageously high as an average across almost 300,000 people.

    I hope beyond hope that it’s all legit and they release a fantastic game, but something just doesn’t add up about it all.

  27. Tannhauser

    @27
    Chris Roberts. Simple as that. There are many, many people out there, who grew up with Wing Commander, who knows what he and his team are capable of (RSI is basically a “who-is-who” of the era) and that he has always delivered. And these people are grown up now, maybe have an academical degree, make good money and are still enthusiastic enough to invest their money in a dream that came directly from the golden era of PC-Gaming. The rest is clever hype and amazing community support.

    Taken from Star Citizen FAQ webpage

    At the moment you will be able to play it on a dual core PC with a GTX 460 or greater and 4GB of system memory. If you’re running an i7 2500, 2600, 2700 or better with a GTX 670 or greater then the stars are the limit!
