DriveClub alpha gameplay footage shows racer running on PS4

Friday, 23rd August 2013 09:09 GMT By Dave Owen

Gamescom has been a battle of next-gen racers. Sony’s exclusive offering DriveClub now has gameplay footage taken directly from PlayStation 4. It’s alpha, but it’s still looking good.

The footage is running at 30fps in 720p. It’s not clear yet quite how this will change for the final release, though Evolution Studios have said they’re aiming for 60fps at launch. This is, after all, alpha footage.

The video shows the cockpit view, the focus on precise, realistic driving, and some of the social features such as the ability to view the times and top speeds of your friends during the race.

DriveClub is a PlayStation4 exclusive launch title. A stripped down version will be free to all PS Plus subscribers.

Thanks, SplatteredHouse.

I think it will certainly go for 1080P (if not 60fps) at launch.

I like the title, if this was an Xbox One game the title would be
“DriveClub gameplay footage shows racer running on the XBox One at 30 fps”

I think MS win nex-gen …. sony based on the same titles as the PS3, and less social games at this time.
writes it as the holder ps3, ps2

@2 yeah it will maybe……….with lower textures no AA…more dumb AI …and other optimizations that require making the game to be playable.

#4 calm down Xdrone, both Xbox one and PS4 are aiming for 1080p 60fps for all games.

But sometimes it dosnt work out, especially early in a console lifetime when they hardly know the tricks etc.

Dead Rising and other games have the same problem.

Will get better every year as it always does.

lol Need For Speed: Drive Club

Alpha huh? 3 months until the PS4 release. 2 months until they have to ship it off to be printed and packaged. Alpha to Beta to Release in 2 months…

    “but it’s still looking good.”

    Christ almighty… /facepalm

I duno why any one would complain about Dead Rising 3 being 30 fps. The sheer amount of zombies on the screen explains why. And am sick of these next gen 30 and 60 fps argument. Some games just don’t need the 60fps.

@9 This typical VG247 begin Sony apologist, putting Alpha in the title.

  12. Max Payne

@8 There will not be 1080p 60fps for all games.
Maybe some fighting games, platformers or racers will be but other stuff no.
Maybe I am wrong but only multiplatform games that are 1080p,60fps are Blag Flag and Cod Ghots.

  13. naffgeek

@10 People complain about Dead Rising because they haven’t even hit 30fps yet.

With all the promises of a shiny new generation the least we could have expected was full HD games at a locked fps (even 30 if there are loads of npcs on screen like DR3).

Having said all this I think it will come down to engines and good tech rather than the hardware.

BF4 is 1080p at 60fps at launch so it can be done.

just look at the physics of the knack, a game that started on ps3, parts disappear so fast that even they can not see … not what we expect from nex gen

  15. machy

@tech DR demo dropped under 18 FPS just saying, and also every demo that being shown so far from both camps are in alpha stages

  16. Tech-N9ne

    @16
My point is, I didn’t see the fact that the game is in alpha or beta any where in DR3 article. So, the frame rate is not full at 30 but they that’s the plan. The game is not done.

But it this article they start by pointing out its in alpha that’s why its 30 fps, but the target is 60fps.

Why not be fair to all game despite what platform its on. This just make it difficult for developers to be honest with their games, because sites like this just twist things to fit whatever their agenda is. In the case on this site there pro Sony agenda.

I really hope it does improve to at least 60fps (one of the titles I have on pre-order with my PS4). If it doesn’t then surely it’s more to do with Evolution’s inability as a studio rather the “next-gen” machine.

Just look at Forza 5 – inferior console spec with Xbox One, but better visuals (thus far) and running flawlessly at 1080p, 60fps. It would seem Turn 10 are considerably better than Evolution.

Destuction in MAG, anyone? Number of players doesn’t guarantee you cool mechanics and fun gameplay. Like Planetside 2 – everything is cool in that game but you got fed up with it in no time :(

    #21 11 months ago
  22. Kreion

    @23
Then again I think you do have to take into account that Turn 10 is basically part of MS and only make Forza xD I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m just giving a reason :) As always I’d say that Forza v.s Driveclub is an unfair comparison and that you can only really compare it to the next GT game.

Though this does make it more obvious I think that this generation, more than any other, will likely come down to how well the companies can optimize their games for the tech available. Especially when you have PC gamers already playing at 60fps and 1080p most of the time.

    OMG……

    Are you ……???

It says…. “The **footage** is running at 30fps in 720p”…. NOT THE GAME.

The game IS 1080p, maybe not 60fps maybe yes but IT IS 1080p.

Question: Graphics wise, can we expect 1080p and 60 frames per second?

Answer: The demo currently available here at E3 is running at 30fps but 60fps is something we are definitely targeting. Obviously we are a game in development and we are aiming towards the 60fps goal but we cannot make any promises right now. ***In terms of resolution, the game will run at 1080p native***. You gotta love those pixels.

@6 ‘sony based on the same titles as the PS3, and less social games at this time.’

    Seriously?
I wonder where some people’s heads are. Really.
Let’s see. XBA is basing their games around Forza, Dead Rising, and Halo (Not going into multiplat games)
Returning IPs for PS4 announced so far Oddworld (Spent most of it’s time on Xbox, and only old games came out last gen) and Infamous. The rest is new IP and Indie titles.

As for social games? War Thunder? Massive plane based online game. Planetside 2, DCUO both MMOs, not to mention FFXIV coming to the console.

Seriously. Fanboys need to check their details on both consoles before they start spouting bollocks like that.

Wow, this really look bad! Gameplay wise it looks exactly like Forza Horizon but I think even Horizon on the 360 look better! So far Forza 5 is completely destroying this gfx wise.

    @27
So Killzone just appeared out of nowhere? Whilst the PS4 DOES have new IP, the only interesting one is 1886, and maybe Knack. Since I haven’t heard about the rest, I presume there’s not much hype for them.

    #26 11 months ago
  27. Eregol

@29 Ah yes, forgot about Killzone. Point is, that you can’t criticise one console over the other for re-using ip from the previous gen. They’re both doing it to practically the same degree.

I’m sick and tired of the ridiculous assertions the fanboys are making regarding both consoles. Guess I’m just fed up of idiots not doing their research and basing everything on assumptions.

I think the game looks good, but the video isnt all that great, im reserving judgement till reviews come in or I play it. Its not trying to be Forza, whcih is fine with me as I dont care for the series, or any sim. I prefer aracde racers or rallysport.

  29. SplatteredHouse

In the case that you’re referring to the video quality, they’re uploading a higher quality version to the PlayStation Youtube account. They were sort of bandwidth limited at the venue, according to one of the Evolution team’s tweets.

For fucks sake it’s still in pre alpha form.Their is time to get 1080p /60fps.People need to understand Sony was going with a 4gb ram console. These teams had to adjust to the new spec.

    #30 11 months ago
  31. Riseer

@28 oh right Forza 5 doesn’t look that good. The road textures look as good as GT5.The bloom effects ruin the look for me,also how many cars will be on screen at once?Horizon doesn’t hold DC jock strap.

    #31 11 months ago
  32. PS4FANB0Y

@33 – Don’t even compare the sophistication of Forza 5 to Drive Club. There is a reason they are offering DriveClub for free. You will never see a free version of GT or Forza.

    IMHO, GT6 > DC… any day!

The reason why the video isn’t running at 60fps is because youtube only shows videos at 30fps. Even if the gameplay was uploaded at 60, youtube will downgrade it to 30 after processing. Download the Battlefield 4 trailer here @ 1080p 60fps! It looks amazing! http://bf4central.com/2013/04/battlefield-4-vide-60-frames-per-second/
