I really quite like what I’m seeing, here.

In the past, games have been made or broken by whether they’ve allowed user content and mods. The most obvious example of this being every Bethesda game since Morrowind, but there are numerous others as well. Right now one can look at the Steam Workshop and see just how many games are having their flaws fixed and lives extended by dedicated, talented, creative people. Furthermore, user generated content allows for the sort of envelope-pushing that the mainstream has conditioned themselves not to do.

The very definition of the mainstream at the moment is anodyne — a complete lack of offence to the masses. Certain colours might be offensive, so all colours are removed; certain notions might be offensive to a society/culture somewhere in some demographic or other, so all of these offensive notions become taboo; certain types of person might indeed be offensive, so all characters are hand-scrubbed down into one-dimensional phenotypes who’re now caricatures rather than characters, and so on.

It’s just the state of affairs. This is why I often look towards the indiees and mods to do more interesting things.

An MMO designed from the outset to include user generated content?

Mmmh. Interesting. Very interesting. We’ll see how it turns out.

Hopefully SOE won’t get squicked and place a billion rules and restrictions as to what can and cannot exist as content.
