DICE: Frostbite 3 untested on Wii U due to disappointing Frostbite 2 tests

Tuesday, 7th May 2013 13:46 GMT By Dave Cook

Frostbite 3 hasn’t been tested on Wii U due to unsatisfactory tests of the Frostbite 2 engine.

The decision came after what DICE’s technical director Johan Andersson has called “Tests with not too promising results”.

Gamechup rightly suggests that given the volume of EA games using the Frostbite engine these days, this could result in several key titles skipping Nintendo’s format – chiefly Battlefield 4, Dragon Age 3: Inquisition and the next Mass Effect title.

Andersson confirmed that the DICE-developed Star Wars game would run on Frostbite 3, so that’s out too.

What’s your take on the above?

My take is that WiiU destiny was foreseeable from day 1 and Nintendo should make platforms only playing first party titles.

But Crytek said they had the cryengine 3 running and performing well on the system and the Cryeng3 produces far better visuals than Frostbyte 3.

Either Frostbyte 2 and 3 is just so bloated and inefficient that it can’t keep up with far superior engines, or he is just spouting PR nonsense because they don’t feel the reward for porting is there with a small userbase…. but then again it is EA, and they have already pulled support from Nintendo.

Cryengine 3 as an engine is much better for developers in general I think. But so far Frostbyte 3 looks amazing. AMAZING. My PC will be blown away in to the pieces :D

Frostbyte 2 was awesome too (when DICE made Battlefield 3) while NFS and Army OF Two were okay looking games at BEST.

Anyway, WiiU should just die. There is no reason for WiiU to exist in this gen.
I said since Nintendo showed it’s console that WiiU is a pile of worthless crap. That kitchen sink is the same thing as Portstation Vita.

Vita and WiiU should die and be forgotten. Period.

Well, 3 crap Gamecube CPUs and a HD4650 will not suffice for next gen.

This was me chief concern with the Wii U. Ninty fans will continue to defend it for its low specs but the console will miss out on too much. As I kept saying low specs would not only limit how he games perform & look but newer engines couldn’t run on it altogether, if they did it’d be a severely neutered version like any Wii game compared to any PS360. The exact same scenario is already beginning to take affect before the PS4 & next Xbox have been released…

so it can run on the PS3 and 360 but not Wii U? either r Nintendo has again dropped the ball with their hardware or this is nothing more than PR crap for “can’t be bothered putting in the effort to get it running”

The amount of misinformation on the Wii U’s capability is amazing. People are quick to negatively bandwagon and dismiss the system. That’s unfortunate. Some throw in assumed specs (that are off-base) and think they’re sounding intelligent when they’re making themselves look quite the opposite.

    Excuses, excuses, excuses.
How long will it be before Nintendo become irrelevant from third party publishers POV.

Can’t say we didn’t see this coming. @9 the official specs don’t really matter if it can’t even recieve ports of 360/ps3 games running frostbite2.

    @9

Yer I don’t think you can complain about misinformation when a dev says “We tried this, but it didn’t work”.
Not much scope for misunderstanding that.

@12 So CryEngine 3 works and seemingly does as much without issue, but Frostbite 2/3 doesn’t. You’re saying it’s a hardware issue? Clearly, it isn’t. The argument isn’t that simplistic. I hope this statement puts things in perspective a bit.

Yet another L that Nintendo has taken. :P My Wii U is still collecting dust here guys!

Er, no, saying “This engine works, so this one should too” is a massive generalisation.

I don’t know what the issue is, all I see is a dev from DICE saying they had “not too promising results” with Frostbite 2. Perhaps DICE didn’t try hard enough (and Crytek did), but regardless, it doesn’t bode well for Nintendo’s console.

#15 +1. It’s obvious that DICE missed out on their refill of Nintendo “magic”.
