PS4: PlayStation Meeting 2013 heralds big news from Sony

“Just what will Sony announce at PlayStation Meeting 2013?” is a question almost nobody is asking, because we’re all getting short odds on the answer being “PlayStation 4″.

Sony has announced a big reveal coming 6:00PM PST on February 20. You can sign up for updates via a teaser page.

The last PlayStation Meeting was called to announce the Vita, so if this one’s not the next PlayStation console, it’s going to have to be something really spectacular.

Next-generation hardware announced from Sony and Microsoft are expected this year. Although Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai told press Microsoft could make the first move, sources said Sony wanted to beat Microsoft to the punch, something back up by independent rumours.

The firm has been struggling with financial issues and may need the boost of a new hardware announce to retain stockholder faith. Some sources have suggested the new consoles might ship before the holiday season this year, but bear in mind Sony announced the Vita almost a full year before its launch.

Sony released a teaser trailer to go with the announcement, which is full of abstract shapes. Feel free to speculate on what they might mean and express your disdain for the female sigh at the end.

PlayStation 4: what we think we know

Sony’s next generation PlayStation 4 has generated a number of persistent rumours, many of which have attached the codename Orbis to the device. VG247′s sources suggests the PS4 will have significantly more raw computational power than Durango, Microsoft’s next-generation offering.

The console has been frequently linked to AMD 10 eight-core technology, and is said to have at least 4GB of RAM; internal storage of at least 256GB; and a Blu-ray drive capable of reading discs of up to 100GB of data.

Sony is said to be aiming for an affordable price point and to use the same input and output devices, so you shouldn’t need a fancy new telly. The system’s OS is said to have been heavily revised since PlayStation 3′s XMB, and thanks to 1GB of RAM dedicated to system functions, will allow users to switch in and out of games and system functions fluidly.

Multiple rumours and alleged leaks have backed up these claims.

On the less frequently-cited side, there’s word that Sony may develop a new controller for the console. One whisperer said it might have biometric features. A new social and multiplayer service, BigFest, is expected.

EA said yesterday it has next-generation games in the works, and Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream recently registered a domain suggesting it has one, too. Mentions of next-generation hardware and games have been turning up on résumés and job advertisements for well over a year now.

Sony shut down production of the PlayStation 2 recently, which is sensible if a new generation of hardware manufacturing is required.

Hirai actually said not too long ago that he wanted MS to make it’s first move. No?

I’m not sure that they will show PS4. Maybe they will show what hardware is capable of. Because I see no reason for Sony to announce PS4 at all because they don’t want to fail that much like with PS3.

I think we will see a bunch of tech demos from First Party and maybe Third party. EA, Activision, Ubi.

@monkeygourmet,
“At least 1080p, 60fps”

Ahahahaha. Loooooool. No. Sorry. good luck having something in 30 frames per second.

Well, they won’t be doing enough then to last 8 years if the next cycle is a long one too…

^ I think every game will be 1080p, but 60 frames? No.Way.In.Hell.

60 frames per second is only for PC’s because you can change the hardware. (Unless PS4 will enable you to change hardware which will never happen anyway.) Games are better graphically and gameplay wise every year. No 60 frames on consoles. I think launch games will be in 60 Frames.

PS4 reveal already in February? I don’t know but i highly doubt that. I’d expect it alot closer to E3 really.

And if next-gen games won’t be 60fps, that would suck. I have a 60 inch plasma and i really notice that stuff. I recently placed the MG Rising demo and it was a delight with the 60 frames, or at least..it felt so damn smooth…had to be 60.

60fps only on pc? why? I think ps4 can run every game at 60fps if it comes out with rumoured specs. It is onl a game focused device not the pc.

i am going to make the craziest prediction ever (this is highly unlikely). ps4 coming in may 2014. i think last of us will have a simultaneous ps4 release. gtav is going to release first on ps4 in may. probably the reason it got delayed for xbox 360 and ps3 the last minute. i know this is probably dumb but i just have a weird theory. last of us has not been playable yet. the journos have only seen it played by the devs. i just want to see someone do an apple and release something within 3 months. i am going to say it will release first in us and then europe and then last in japan because they have a lot of games coming out that they like coming out this year.

My prediction:

Cloud gaming on both PS3 and Vita.

Remodeled PS3 that has more RAM target price still 300USD

More MMO games on PS3

PS HOME made compatiable on Web Browsers, Vita, and streamlined to the OS

Outrageous Predictions:

MS and Sony announce a merger for next gen. Recent specs people have been seeing is a collab device to streamline MS and SONY into one mega console next gen.

Indeed, sounds like it will be pretty big.

But still, Sony has disappointed me bigtime with several E3 shows now, no expectations here. Same goes for MS. I hope both companies still know how to make an awesome show.

A very clever move from sony if it comes to fruition. Console reveals are big enough events to warrant their own conferences. I also said Kaz may be bluffing, guess I was right there too.

mathare92
01/02/13, 2:46 am

This has to be the big reveal right? Even a huge blowout about Gaikai integration would be a bit underwhelming with this kind of build-up. Whatever it is, I really hope it’ll be a leak-free reveal. Knowing Sony though, details are eventually going to filter through the grapevine at some point in these next three weeks.

If you ask me, this is what should be moving through the intranet at Sony’s Marketing Dept. right now…

Keep it safe. Keep it secret.

Dragon246

@mathare,
Agree 100%. But I really doubt anyone could keep such big reveals secret, as there are so many people involved, outside of sony no less. Every apple and samsung announcements only confirm what was known months ago.
Blame the chinese for this :D

Just to add, livestream will be done on ps blog.
And when IGN contacted Sony for comment, they said -
“The PlayStation meeting will be about the future of the PlayStation business.”
The meeting will take place in New York City.

@Erth

What are you talking about? All of the CoD’s run between 45-60fps and it’s the end of the generation. Besides that, games get optimized when it comes to consoles. It’s up to the dev how the game is going to run, not just the consoles limitations. Plus, the consoles don’t have nearly as much background stuff running to bog them down. I’ll agree not EVERY game is going to do 60fps but i put that on the dev’s and how graphically intensive they make their game, how skilled they are at optimizing and polishing, and their engine.

It probably won’t be the PS4. My guess is it will be PSN integration with Sony televisions and a web portal.

I think I like the idea of a much more humble, slightly desperate, conscious of the competition, Sony.

It’s a complete turnaround from how they were pre-PS3.

Johnny Cullen

@18 Actually, they didn’t use a PlayStation Meeting to announce PlayStation 3. I can’t speak for PlayStation 1 because I don’t know how that was announced.

But the last four hardware announces have been a mixture of E3 and PlayStation Meetings. PlayStation 2 was announced at a PlayStation Meeting in March 1999, whilst PlayStation 3 was infamously announced at E3 2005.

PlayStation Portable was (kind of) announced at E3 2003, but the final version wasn’t shown until a year later, also at E3. PlayStation Vita, as hopefully now well known around here, was announced at a PlayStation Meeting two years ago.

To get off my high horse: IT’S HAPPENING!

Could this be one of the reasons Rockstar Games moved the release date on GTA V? don´t shoot the new guy, be gentle :)

When you look at the trailer there seems like some of shapes that appear do not fit or match with the Playstation symbols or is it just my mind that is messing with me?

hmmm…i think the ps3 still has enough steam for 2 more years. the 360 for 1 max. i think in these financial crisis times they will wait as long as they can. vita isn’t out long, they just redesigned the ps3. maybe they just add a new touchpad controller, something vita to the ps3? new stuff to expand the life of the ps 3 for two more years? to counter wiiu and nextbox smartglas. something like this: “hey, you can just get our cheaper add on and you can have the same experience with less costs. the ps 3 still is a powerhouse, see, here you have the last of us, a game that looks better than any other game on any other system yet plus these great games, designed with the new *whatever it will be* in mind *then announce some games for that thing just like kinect, move stuff etc.” you know, something like that. counter, no need to release new hardware (in the form of a brandnew console) yet. that would be pretty clever actually. my prediction: this holiday nextbox, holiday 2014 ps4 – earliest spring or mid 2014… as a multiplat gamer that’s ok. i wouldn’t want to buy a ps4 this year. to me it still feels fresh enough and there are great games for it in the pipeline…

now i watched the trailer. transparent circles squares triangles, electricity that looks like it connects things. i still think it’ll be something wiiu, smart glassish and something vita/ps 3 combined…could also be a new console sure, could be anything. i just think it would make sense. i mean vita and ps3 are still super for great looking games. combine them, maybe make a new os, a new social online feature ‘big fest’ and sell the shit out of the hardware you already have. you can counter wiiu graphically and i believe nextbox too for two more years and then release the superduperultrapower ps4 in 2 years and be first with the most powerful console ever…

Nice to wake up to this. It’s probably PS4, but my own personal guess – based on nothing but past releases and gut feeling – is that it’ll launch spring 2014. They’ll announce now to appease investors and keep everyone sweet for a year. Then release in Easter next year.

I still have a gut feeling 720 will be out in November.

@polygem i personally thought early 2014 for ps4 but they have to get out this holiday to gain lost market share from last gen. there are people that are starving for new hardware so they cannot afford to miss out on that initial rush. you are crazy if you think they can wait for 2 years. in 2 years time they could be the most powerful console but people would have already got the 720 and not see the increase in graphic quality as substantial to go out and buy the ps4 and the wii u would have cut the price to 199 by then and the xbox 720 would do a price cut right around ps4 launch as well so at which point they would be screwed.

they can and will definitely support the ps3 for 2 or 3 more years with software. if i were to guess seeing that this is revealed in US and not in japan like the vita that it is launching in the US first and europe next and japan last because i think ps3 is going to sell really well in japan going forward looking at the amount of software it is getting.
