Edmund McMillen’s dark rogue-like The Binding of Isaac is coming to consoles courtesy of Nicalis.
The remake, subtitled Rebirth, was announced in a post-mortem on Gamasutra.
McMillen has mused publicly about the possibility of a console release for the successful adventure, but it wasn’t he who initiated the port; his experience with Super Meat Boy as one half of Team Meat has left him unwilling to get back into the “business end” of console development.
Instead he was approached by Tyrone Rodriguez of Cave Story and VVVVVV publisher Nicalis. McMillen agreed provided Nicalis stuck by a few guidelines – including leaving McMillen out of the business side.
The remake will include a second expansion which technical limitations kept from the Mac and PC version, as well as local co-op multiplayer. It will have completely remade 16-bit graphics.
Development has begun but Nicalis isn’t ready to announce platforms yet. McMillen said Sony and Microsoft launches are likely, and that he has a “feeling the new look might soften up a few people at Nintendo for a possible Wii U/3DS eShop release”.
“I’m wary about how the game might control on iPad, but if they can make it work, I’m all for it,” he added.
McMillen wrote on his blog that release is expected “sometime late next year”.
The Binding of Isaac has sold over 1 million copies on PC and Mac in less than one year from launch.
