StarCraft 2 – Blizzard “looking at free-to-play” as an option for multiplayer

StarCraft 2′s Dustin Browder has said Blizzard is “looking at free-to-play as an option for the multiplayer,” according to StarcraftN.

Browder’s comments come from a panel discussion during the Valencia eSports Congress.

“We don’t know how we would monetize it,” he said. “While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them.”

It may be a while yet as the firm has Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void to get out first.

    This simply won’t work.

    SC2 is the most balanced strategy game since Brood War.

    You remove 1 unit and the game is pretty much broken. So a pay to win or pay for extra unit’s system will not work as he has obviously stated.

    For example.

    Protoss

    No zealot? die to …well actually you just cant beat terran, and you can’t kill zerglings..

    Your fucked.

    No stalkers?

    Your just fucked completely.

    And that’s just the first two units. Matches like TvP require Splash damage from units like High Templar or Colossus to even keep the match even.

    So buying unit’s would simply be fucking broken let alone a bit of a disadvantage in this game.

    I believe Blizzard wants to monetize the Arcade side of SC2. Which is fine by me.

    Blizzard is making more than enough money from the E-sports side of SC2, they don’t actually need to sell it to continue making money, and their biggest rival is LOL(League of Legends) which is a free to play game.

    However, it’s Bliz and of course not needed money doesn’t mean they don’t want it.

    I could see the game going FTP, however players would not have access to their stats, replays, clans, arcade, or achievements.

    It could work, but the gameplay in multiplayer can’t change. The balance sits on a knife’s edge, paying for units just isn’t even an option.

    I’m back on SC2 atm. I’m pretty hyped for HoTS, so Ive been getting back into it after nearly 2 years out.

    The free to play option would more likely be one where you get one race Terran for free and can only play 1v1 or possibly only 2v2 in order to preserve the competitive aspects of the game. A unit by unit cost wouldn’t work as stated. Free to Play doesn’t all ways have to be bound to micro transactions.

    For example

    free Terran MP
    $15 Zerg MP
    $15 Protoss Mp
    $20 Single player
    $10 arcade

    This is stupid, and they’ve already done enough to ruin the game for multiplayer with the “relaxed matchmaking” which has unbalanced team games for a while now. I played some 4v4′s the other day, and in all 4 games where our team was favored, we had someone that had to make sure we lost by killing off the team mates, most likely a smurf account. The smurfs are another thing, run into them all the time. You can be a silver player like me, and they put you up against golds and plats. Where’s the balance in that?

    Yeah, but that’s not really the game’s fault, is it?

    It’s people who just want to win easy games, so they create a new account to play in a bronze league and play beginners.

    I don’t see how you can blame Blizzard for ‘ruining’ the game, when the problems are caused by anti-social players.

    It’s like players who try and rush you at the beginning of a match, then after a 20 minute game, spend another 10 minutes running around trying to hide buildings, even though they know they’ve lost.

    They’re to blame, not Blizzard.
