Ico and Shadow of the Colossus producer Kenji Kaido leaves Sony

Tuesday, 28th August 2012 00:20 GMT By Debabrata Nath

Kenji Kaido, who had produced the critically acclaimed PlayStation 2 games Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has left Sony.

He disclosed this news via a tweet.

“I have some news,” he wrote on Monday. “This August, I left Sony Computer Entertainment. My plans for the future are undecided as of now, but for the time being I’m going to continue my summer vacation.”

In response to another tweet by Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Super Smash Bros, who expressed shock at his announcement, Kaido tweeted:

“Thank you very much. I’m also excited about whatever I’m going to be doing next.”

Kaido worked at Taito before joining Sony, where he designed arcade games like Cameltry and Sonic Blast Man.

Although Kaido wasn’t said to be involved in the development of Team Ico’s next title The Last Guardian, this marks another major exit after that of Fumito Ueda, who announced he’d left Sony late last year.

I’ve played so many games for the past decade: Only three series have stuck in my mind really hard. D1-D2, GTA, and Ico.

I had heard that this “Shadow of the Colossus” game was “different”. When I saw the cover of the game I thought to myself, “Looks like it could be neat.” After opening it to find the instruction manual was printed side ways I got a strong feeling it was going to be special. I was correct. It captured my imagination. I consider myself fortunate I had recently acquired a surround sound system, as the sound effects and score made the game that much more epic. The 5th colossi, i think the bird one, i remember being anxious, unaware of how to initiate combat with it. Standing on one of the platforms in the water, i struck it with an arrow and it began to glide toward me. The sound of the air rushing toward me in addition to the growing apparent scale of the beast, i was overwhelmed with fear when it opened its talons and i side rolled off the platform into the water just in the nick of time. I looked up from underneath water to witness the huge shadow pass above with thundering sound. One of the most memorable moments in gaming to me.

@2 Ditto. For me it was the moment he started flying towards me, and then suddenly… holy shit, this thing is flying. And I’m holding onto him.

That moment has never been topped for me.

Shadow of the Colossus made every game before it feel boring, lazy, unambitious. And many after it too.

Sad to see him go, but I look forward to seeing where he ends up next.

SotC made every videogame before it feel complicated, tactical and deep, and many after it as well.
