Final Fantasy VII PC re-release confirmed – first video

Final Fantasy VII has been confirmed for PC re-release today, with the new version packing fresh online features including achievements, a “Character Booster” and cloud saving.

Final Fantasy VII is coming to PC, Square Enix has said today. The announcement brought the game’s site to its knees.

No release date or price has been confirmed. Square told VG247 today that “we will be issuing more information within the next 24 hours.”

The revamp will include now “a host of new online features”. Achievements are to be included, of which there are 36, as is something called the “Character Booster”.

“With the Character Booster you can increase your HP, MP and Gil levels to their maximum, all with the simple click of a button, leaving you to enjoy your adventure,” said the site.

The game will support cloud saving: “With cloud save support in Final Fantasy VII you can continue your game progress right where you left off, all you need is an internet connection.”

Minimum specs for the new version are:

  • Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7 (32/64-bit)
  • 2GHz Processor or faster
  • 1GB RAM
  • DirectX 9-compatible graphic card

The PC version of FFVII will release “soon,” and will be available exclusively through the Square Enix store. It’ll be shipped in English, French, German and Spanish.

A Final Fantasy VII remake has been rumoured and begged for since time immemorial. Square president Yoichi Wada recently poured water on the talk, however, saying the project could kill the franchise.

iPad version would have been pretty cool. PC though? Not HD? Am I missing something?

Well, it doesnt look like an HD remake, more like a rebuilt version so that it could work on recent PCs. Oh well, I’ll take that over FFXIV anyday :)

@2 Technically, it was in ‘HD’ when it came out on the PC back in 1998.

lol shitty sub-hd graphics

Curious that it says it’ll be exclusive to the Square-Enix store. Didn’t this leak come from Steam originally?

@10: You can still play the PSX version through an emulator.

It’s not a “HD re-release”. It’s just the original PC version being released in digital form with some fixes for bugs and other potential problems that would stop it from playing properly on modern computers.

Yeah, I thought that too. It was like the last fifteen years didn’t happen or something. Additionally, the VO guy on it needs to fuck off really.

I’ve replayed the game a few times, emulator, original PC release, and even the PSN version and one thing always bugs the shit out of me. I Don’t want them to change the music, the gameplay or the the backgrounds and environments. There is one thing that smacks me in the face every time though, those godawful character models. Seriously how hard could it be update that shit? You could add 10x the poly count to each one and not strain the lowliest of netbooks. I mean I KNOW that cleaning up the translations/dialogue, expanding on the story and clarifying some of the more obscure and confusing portions is WAY WAY too much to ask but how about assigning an intern to update those character models huh, it would only take poor guy a day or two.

@25

Wouldn’t take a day to remodel all the characters. Not sure what you are smoking but you should lay off of it.

@25 @26 There are mods out there already that allow you to update the character models.

@27

I understand that I am just saying that it would take more than a day for a single person to update the models there is no button that automatically makes low poly models into models like God of War or more.

I was being facetious, I don’t really believe that an intern could update the models in one day >.> the point I was making through my little comical exaggeration is that for a company of their size and resources, updating the character models is a spectacularly trivial task, well within the scope of their abilities.
