“We can absolutely sell a million units,” of Dragon’s Dogma in Japan, says Itsuno

Dragon’s Dogma producer Hideaki Itsuno believes it’s a shoe-in that Dragon’s Dogma will sell at least 1 million units in Japan, however, the game may be hit or miss with the rest of the globe.

“In Japan, we can absolutely sell a million units,” he said. “We know that’s attainable, it’s absolutely do-able. We have a kind of assurance that that will happen, but for worldwide that’s not so much the case, and I think that’s why a lot of Japanese developers are hesitant about going global. It’s because they don’t have that assurance that it’ll be successful.”

Speaking with VideoGamer, Itsuno said the larger goal, is for the game to sell 10 million units worldwide.

“I don’t know if other Japanese developers are trying to become more global, but I know we definitely are. It’s difficult, because we really want this game to sell 10 million units worldwide,” he said.

“We want to sell a lot, and that’s just something that we think we can do. We’re not positive [it will be a success]. Of course it’s a risk, but that’s what we want – a challenge.”

Dragon’s Dogma will release on PS3 and Xbox 360 in May.

No one can say how much a game can sell before it comes out. I certainly dont want it to be another japanese game which underperforms everywhere else ( depending on quality of course ).
Really, people should move beyond shooters, open world and sports and appreciate different genres of gaming.

I’ve played this a bit. It’s pretty good, very deep. A good old school RPG with some awesome new school trappings.
